The development of flexible and physically robust organic solar cells requires detailed knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the heterogeneous material stack. However, in these devices there has been limited research on the mechanical properties of the active organic layer. Here, two critical mechanical properties, stiffness and ductility, of a widely studied organic solar cell active layer, a blend film composed of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) are reported. Processing conditions are varied to produce films with differing morphology and correlations are developed between the film morphology, mechanical properties and photovoltaic device performance. The morphology is characterized by fitting the absorption of the P3HT:PCBM films to a weakly interacting H‐aggregate model. The elastic modulus is determined using a buckling metrology approach and the crack onset strain is determined by observing the film under tensile strain using optical microscopy. Both the elastic modulus and crack onset strain are found to vary significantly with processing conditions. Processing methods that result in improved device performance are shown to decrease both the compliance and ductility of the film. 相似文献

Backgrounds
With 10% of the general population aged 15–59 years chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), Egypt is the country with the highest HCV prevalence worldwide. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are therefore at particularly high risk of HCV infection. Our aim was to study HCV infection risk after occupational blood exposure among HCWs in Cairo.Methodology/Principal Findings
The study was conducted in 2008–2010 at Ain Shams University Hospital, Cairo. HCWs reporting an occupational blood exposure at screening, having neither anti-HCV antibodies (anti-HCV) nor HCV RNA, and exposed to a HCV RNA positive patient, were enrolled in a 6-month prospective cohort with follow-up visits at weeks 2, 4, 8, 12 and 24. During follow-up, anti-HCV, HCV RNA and ALT were tested. Among 597 HCWs who reported a blood exposure, anti-HCV prevalence at screening was 7.2%, not different from that of the general population of Cairo after age-standardization (11.6% and 10.4% respectively, p = 0.62). The proportion of HCV viremia among index patients was 37%. Of 73 HCWs exposed to HCV RNA from index patients, nine (12.3%; 95%CI, 5.8–22.1%) presented transient viremia, the majority of which occurred within the first two weeks after exposure. None of the workers presented seroconversion or elevation of ALT.Conclusions/Significance
HCWs of a general University hospital in Cairo were exposed to a highly viremic patient population. They experienced frequent occupational blood exposures, particularly in early stages of training. These exposures resulted in transient viremic episodes without established infection. Repellency of six materials, two plant essential oil (clove and flax seed oils), two plant extracts (neem and harmal seed extracts) and two inorganic salts (silica dust and tri-calcium phosphate), to Sitophilus granarius L. were evaluated. Per cent repellency (PR) was determined for each material. Repellent effects of tested materials were proportional to concentration and higher concentration has stronger effect. Neem and flax seed oils had the strongest repellence effect (100%) after 2, 4 and 6?h of treatment at concentrations of 20, 10 and 5?mL/kg grains. Repellency activity of both oils was gradually decreased with the passage of time to reach its lowest level after 12?h of treatment. Their repellency tended to class IV or stronger during the whole exposure period. Neem and harmal seed extracts had maximum repellency (98.7 and 86.5%, respectively) at highest concentration (1000?ppm), while the lowest concentration (250?ppm) had minimum repellency effects (62.9 and 71.6%, respectively). Both extracts showed potent repellent activity against the pest and repellency values ranged between class IV and class V. The repellency action of silica dust and tri-calcium phosphate followed nearly the same trend as shown in case of oil and extracts. High repellent activities of silica dust and tri-calcium phosphate (87.3 and 97.4%, respectively) were observed at concentration of 5?g/kg, whereas the lowest mean of repellency (56.4 and 41.0%) was recorded at concentration of 1.29?g/kg. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified in cells as well as in exosomes in biological fluids such as milk. In mammary gland, most of the miRNAs studied have functions related to immunity and show alterations in their pattern of expression during lactation. In mastitis, the inflammatory response caused by Streptococcus uberis alters the expression of miRNAs that may regulate the innate immune system. These small RNAs are stable at room temperature and are resistant to repeated freeze/thaw cycles, acidic conditions and degradation by RNAse, making them resistant to industrial procedures. These properties mean that miRNAs could have multiple applications in veterinary medicine and biotechnology. Indeed, lactoglobulin-free milk has been produced in transgenic cows expressing specific miRNAs. Although plant and animal miRNAs have undergone independent evolutionary adaptation recent studies have demonstrated a cross-kingdom passage in which rice miRNA was isolated from human serum. This finding raises questions about the possible effect that miRNAs present in foods consumed by humans could have on human gene regulation. Further studies are needed before applying miRNA biotechnology to the milk industry. New discoveries and a greater knowledge of gene expression will lead to a better understanding of the role of miRNAs in physiology, nutrition and evolution. 相似文献

In general, tumors cells that are resistant to apoptosis and increase angiogenesis are a result of the hypoxic responses contributing to the malignant phenotype. In this study, we developed a chronic hypoxic cell model (HMLL), by incubating the prostate cancer MatLyLu cells in a hypoxic chamber (1% O2) over 3 weeks. Surviving cells were selected through each cell passage and were grown in the hypoxic condition up to 8 weeks. This strategy resulted in survival of only 5% of the cells. The surviving hypoxic cells displayed a greater stimulation on hypoxic adaptive response, including a greater expression of glucose transporter1 (Glut1) and VEGF secretion. In addition, higher invasion activity was observed in the chronic hypoxic HMLL cells as compared to MatLyLu cells exposed to acute hypoxia (1% O2, 5 h) using the matrigel assay. To further examine the role of HIF-1α in tumor progression, both MatLyLu and HMLL cells were transfected with dominant-negative form of HIF-1α (DNHIF-1α). The Matrigel invasion activity induced by chronic hypoxia was significantly attenuated by DNHIF-1α. These results suggest that signaling pathways leading to hypoxic response may be differentially regulated in chronic hypoxic cells and acute hypoxic cells. Chronic hypoxia may play a greater role than acute hypoxia in promoting the aggressive phenotype of tumor cells. This observation mimics the clinical scenario where tumor cells following treatment with radiation are subjected to hypoxic conditions. The amyloid β-peptide (Aβ), strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), is produced from the amyloid β-protein precursor (APP) through consecutive proteolysis by β- and γ-secretases. The latter protease contains presenilin as the catalytic component of a membrane-embedded aspartyl protease complex. Missense mutations in presenilin are associated with early-onset familial AD, and these mutations generally both decrease Aβ production and increase the ratio of the aggregation-prone 42-residue form (Aβ42) to the 40-residue form (Aβ40). The connection between these two effects is not understood. Besides Aβ40 and Aβ42, γ-secretase produces a range of Aβ peptides, the result of initial cutting at the ε site to form Aβ48 or Aβ49 and subsequent trimming every three or four residues. Thus, γ-secretase displays both overall proteolytic activity (ε cutting) and processivity (trimming) toward its substrate APP. Here we tested whether a decrease in total activity correlates with decreased processivity using wild-type and AD-mutant presenilin-containing protease complexes. Changes in pH, temperature, and salt concentration that reduced the overall activity of the wild-type enzyme did not consistently result in increased proportions of longer Aβ peptides. Low salt concentrations and acidic pH were notable exceptions that subtly alter the proportion of individual Aβ peptides, suggesting that the charged state of certain residues may influence processivity. Five different AD mutant complexes, representing a broad range of effects on overall activity, Aβ42:Aβ40 ratios, and ages of disease onset, were also tested, revealing again that changes in total activity and processivity can be dissociated. Factors that control initial proteolysis of APP at the ε site apparently differ significantly from factors affecting subsequent trimming and the distribution of Aβ peptides. 相似文献

Green microalga Ankistrodesmus convolutus Corda is a fast growing alga which produces appreciable amount of carotenoids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. To our knowledge,
this is the first report on the construction of cDNA library and preliminary analysis of ESTs for this species. The titers
of the primary and amplified cDNA libraries were 1.1 × 106 and 6.0 × 109 pfu/ml respectively. The percentage of recombinants was 97% in the primary library and a total of 337 out of 415 original
cDNA clones selected randomly contained inserts ranging from 600 to 1,500 bps. A total of 201 individual ESTs with sizes ranging
from 390 to 1,038 bps were then analyzed and the BLASTX score revealed that 35.8% of the sequences were classified as strong
match, 38.3% as nominal and 25.9% as weak match. Among the ESTs with known putative function, 21.4% of them were found to
be related to gene expression, 14.4% ESTs to photosynthesis, 10.9% ESTs to metabolism, 5.5% ESTs to miscellaneous, 2.0% to
stress response, and the remaining 45.8% were classified as novel genes. Analysis of ESTs described in this paper can be an
effective approach to isolate and characterize new genes from A. convolutus and thus the sequences obtained represented a significant contribution to the extensive database of sequences from green
