Primary production data from the south-eastern Weddell Sea

Summary Phytoplankton production for three size classes (<20 m, 20–100 m, >100 m), total primary production and qualitative composition of phytoplankton populations were recorded from 18 stations in the south-eastern Weddell Sea in February/March 1983. Total primary production ranged between 80 and 1670 mg C m^-2 d^-1 with an average of 670 mg C m^-2 d^-1, nearly 70% of which was contributed by the <20 m size fraction (usually pennate and/or centric diatoms). Production of phytoplankton was in the higher range of values reported by other authors for the same region. Variations in primary production could not be attributed to composition of populations, ambient light levels or concentrations of macronutrients (N, P, Si). Phytoplankton populations had a higher diversity in the deeper parts of the Weddell Sea and coincided with different oceanographic situations. Three zones (along the shelf-ice edge from Atka Bay to Halley Bay, west of Halley Bay and off the Filchner/Rønne Ice Shelf) with different communities could be clearly distinguished.     

Animal community structure as a function of stream size

The species-area relationship of the island biogeography theory was calculated for macroinvertebrates in 22 coastal, adjacent streams. A z-value of 0.19 was obtained. The low z-value was probably a consequence of the short distances between streams as well as high dispersal rates. In addition, a cluster analysis based on the dissimilarity of species assemblages showed that stream size was of prime importance in categorizing the streams. To a smaller extent water quality affected the community structure in the streams.     

Anti-predator adaptations in a neustonic insect (Velia caprai)

Summary The risk of a Velia caprai (Heteroptera: Veliidae) individual to fall victim to brown trout (Salmo trutta) was demonstrated experimentally to be markedly lower when several bugs were simultaneously exposed to the trout. V. caprai was found distasteful to brown trout, and a high proportion was ejected alive after being captured. We suggest that school formation in V. caprai lowers the risk of predation because frequent predator-prey encounters may assist in retention of the avoidance learned by the predator. Individual behavioural responses to attacks were variable and the frequency of expansion skating and thanatosis was temperature dependent. Thanatosis postures were either symmetric with the legs pressed to the body or irregular.     

BCG immunotherapy in stage I melanoma patients

Summary Previously, we have provided evidence for a positive correlation between HLA-DR expression in primary melanoma and early metastasis [3, 4]. In the present study we investigated whether this relationship was modified by adjuvant BCG immunotherapy. The study comprised 107 patients with a stage I high-risk melanoma; 44 patients had been treated with BCG, whereas the remaining patients had not received any adjuvant therapy. There was no difference in disease-free survival between BCG-treated and untreated patients. Disease-free survival was significantly shorter in patients with high expression of HLA-DR antigens in the primary tumor.Subgrouping BCG-treated and control patients according to HLA-DR phenotype of the melanoma revealed a prolongation of disease-free survival in the subgroup of BCG-treated patients with no or low expression of HLA-DR antigens in the primary melanoma. BCG therapy apparently did not influence prognosis of patients with high expression of HLA-DR antigens in the tumor.     

Inhibition, by an amphiphilic substance, niflumic acid, of the inward rectification of the crustacean muscle fiber

Agents such as TEA+ or CS+ ions, these last ions instead of K+ ions in poor K extracellular solution, known to reduce or abolish the inwardly rectifying channel in many preparations produced no effect in crayfish muscle membrane By contrast, poor Cl extracellular solution (Cl- ions were replaced by CH3OSO3- ions) blocked the inward current activated by hyperpolarizing pulses and produced an increase of the resting potential. Niflumic acid is a agent which inhibited the inward going rectification of the crayfish muscle membrane. Apparent dissociation constant of niflumic acid with membrane sites was equal to about 6 X 10(-8) M; this value corresponds to that given by Cousin & Motais (1979) concerning translocation of Cl- ions in the membrane of red cells. Activation of the inward going rectification in the crayfish membrane is responsible of an inward current carried by Cl- ions.     

Lipopolysaccharides of two strains of the phototrophic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas capsulata

The lipopolysaccharides of Rhodopseudomonas capsulata strains St. Louis (ATCC 23782) and Sp 11 both contain L-acofriose, rhamnose, glucose and glucosamine as the main sugar constituents. 2-Keto-3-deoxyoctonate and neuraminic acid were tentatively identified. The fatty acid spectrum found with both strains comprises 3-OH-C10 and C12:1 (ester-linked) and 3-oxo-C14 (amide-linked). Isolated lipid A from strain Sp 11 contains glucosamine, glucosamine-phosphate and the total of the fatty acids of the lipopolysaccharide. Methylation analysis of the degraded polysaccharide of this lipopolysaccharide shows L-acofriose in both terminal and 1 leads to 2 chain-linked positions in a 1:4 molar ratio. Rhamnose is exclusively chain-linked (1 leads to 2), glucose is both terminally and chain-linked (1 leads to 6) in a 1:1 molar ratio. The serological activity of the lipopolysaccharide of both the R. capsulata strains is low in antisera against living or heat-killed cells when tested by passive hemagglutination, Ouchterlony immunoprecipitation or gel-immunoelectrophoresis. No crossreaction was observed among the lipopolysaccharides of R. capsulata strains St. Louis, Sp 11 and 37b4 in immunoprecipitation. Lipopolysaccharide of strain Sp 11 was found to lack lethal toxicity in galactosamine-sensitized mice.     

Les effets de recristallisation sur la paroi des Involutinidae (Foraminifères) triasiques

The different types of recrystallization which can be observed in the Triassic involutinids should be considered in the taxonomic treatment of this foraminiferal family. If the diagenetic modifications of the test are neglected the same form could be placed into different suborders. Our inclusion of the genusTriasina Majzon in the Involutinidae proposed earlier on purely morphologic grounds, seems to be supported by the fact that the same types of recrystallization exist inTrocholina, Involutina undTriasina.     

Mycoplasma-like bodies in plants infected with potato witches' broom disease and the response of plants to tetracycline treatment

The virus origin of a Czechoslovak isolate of potato witches' broom disease is discounted: electron micrographs of ultrathin section of phloem tissues from plants infected with potato witches' broom disease demonstratedMycoplasma-like bodies, spherical or elongated showing binary fission and fragmentation. The minute corpuscles have a diameter of about 50–60 nm, the largest bodies of 1000 nm. The width of elongated filamentous structures is about 200 nm, most oval bodies have a diameter of 250 nm. A weak tetracycline treatment of diseased plants causes a delay of symptom development; a strong dose of tetracycline (applied by means of the wick method into the stem) inhibits symptom appearance completely. Tetracycline produces a phytotoxic effect inhibiting the growth of tomato plants and causing (at higher concentrations) necrosis and death of these plants. There is a note in the paper dealing with the term “mycoplasma”. The word mycoplasma in the sense ofEriksson (1897) or ofMereschkowsky (1910) does not correspond to the genus nameMycoplasma Nowak (1929).
