The knowledge about reemergence of parent spruce bark beetles Ips typographus . their dispersal, and production of a second brood is reviewed. A majority of the beetles reemerge after their first brood. The process is mainly determined by temperature but high breeding density decreases the average time spent in the tree. The difference between males and females in reemergence seems to be small. In the field, a positive relationship between residence time and fat content at reemergence seems to exist, whereas the opposite tendency is found under laboratory conditions. In the laboratory, the survival of beetles reemerging late is on the average lower than that for early reemerging beetles. The time of reemergence and size of the first brood do not, however, seem to influence the production of a second brood. A large proportion of the reemerging beetles are able to establish a new brood in the laboratory, but calculations based on the number of attacked trees and estimated reemergence in forests in South Norway suggest that only about one third of the beetles actually produce a second brood. In northern Europe, successful colonization of new trees by the reemerging beetles seems to require a period of several warm days during the main reemergence period.  相似文献

Proliferating nonconfluent 3T3 cells become committed to proceed through the cell cycle or to enter G0 during the first post-mitotic part of G1 (G1pm). The decision to proceed through G1pm is dependent on the presence of serum growth factors in the culture medium. Cells that have passed this particular growth-factor-dependent cell cycle stage are independent of serum growth factors and undergo mitosis on schedule. We report here that G1ps, S, and G2 cells cease to increase in size when serum is withdrawn. As a result the mitotic cell size after 8 hours serum starvation is reduced to approximately 60% of the normal mitotic cell. This reduced growth in cell size is due to a rapid decrease in protein synthesis and some increase in protein degradation. This dissociation between growth in size and cell-cycle progression within a single cell cycle provides a new approach to study the two processes separately.  相似文献

Dextran T 10, elaborated by Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B-512, was oxidised with aqueous bromine at pH 7.0. The resulting oxodextran and its methoximated derivative were analysed by 13C-n.m.r. spectroscopy. The total amount of keto groups and their positions were established. Assignments of the 13C signals were made by referring to spectra of the corresponding methyl glucosiduloses and an oxodextran having most of the carbonyl groups at position 3 of the glycopyranosyl residues. In accordance with the mechanism for bromine oxidation of mono- and di-saccharides, the glucopyranosyl residues of dextran were oxidised mainly at C-2 and C-4. Over-oxidation resulted in a small proportion of acidic, ring-cleavage products.  相似文献

Abstract

A theory based on a Langevin equation along the reaction coordinate is developed to explain and calculate systematic and statistical errors in free energy perturbation simulations. The errors are calculated exactly when both the perturbation potential and the mean potential from the surrounding degrees of freedom are harmonic in the reaction coordinate. The effect of the mean potential is small as long as the force constant is small compared to the force constant of the perturbation potential. This indicates that the results obtained with zero mean force may still be valid as long as the second derivate of the mean potential is small compared to that of the perturbation potential. The theory is applied to conversion between L and D amino acids by changing the position of the minimum of the harmonic improper dihedral potential between ±35.264 degrees. For phenylalanine bound in the active site of a protein (thermolysin) we find from 20 psec. simulations statistical errors and hysteresis that both are about 2.5 kJ/mol in agreement with what is obtained from the theoretical predictions. The statistical errors are proportional to the square root of the coupling to the heat bath and inversely proportional to the square root of integration time while the (positive) hysteresis due to that the reaction coordinate lags behind is linear in the same quantities. This shows that the systematic errors will dominate in short simulations while the statistical ones will dominate for long simulations. The treatment is based on that the systematic influence of the surroundings can be represented by a mean force upon the reaction coordinate. If the relaxation processes of the environment are slow this may not be true. Then additional errors have to be considered.  相似文献

The relationships among the leaf adenylate energy charge, the xanthophyll-cycle components, and photosystem II (PSII) fluorescence quenching were determined in leaves of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. Acala) under different leaf temperatures and different intercellular CO2 concentrations (Ci). Attenuating the rate of photosynthesis by lowering the Ci at a given temperature and photon flux density increased the concentration of high-energy adenylate phosphate bonds (adenylate energy charge) in the cell by restricting ATP consumption (A.M. Gilmore, O. Björkman 1994, Planta 192, 526–536). In this study we show that decreases in photosynthesis and increases in the adenylate energy charge at steady state were both correlated with decreases in PSII photo-chemical efficiency as determined by chlorophyll fluorescence analysis. Attenuating photosynthesis by decreasing Ci also stimulated violaxanthin-de-epoxidation-dependent nonradiative dissipation (NRD) of excess energy in PSII, measured by nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching. However, high NRD levels, which indicate a large trans-thylakoid proton gradient, were not dependent on a high adenylate energy charge, especially at low temperatures. Moreover, dithiothreitol at concentrations sufficient to fully inhibit violaxanthin de-epoxidation and strongly inhibit NRD, affected neither the increased adenylate energy charge nor the decreased PSII photo-chemical efficiency that result from inhibiting photosynthesis. The build-up of a high adenylate energy charge in the light that took place at low Ci and low temperatures was accompanied by a slowing of the relaxation of non-photochemical fluorescence quenching after darkening. This slowly relaxing component of nonphotochemical quenching was also correlated with a sustained high adenylate energy charge in the dark. These results indicate that hydrolysis of ATP that accumulated in the light may acidify the lumen and thus sustain the level of NRD for extended periods after darkening the leaf. Aim Tropical forests have been recognized as important global carbon sinks and sources. However, many uncertainties about the spatial distribution of live tree above‐ground biomass (AGB) remain, mostly due to limited availability of AGB field data. Recent studies in the Amazon have already shown the importance of large sample size for accurate AGB gradient analysis. Here we use a large stem density, basal area, community wood density and AGB dataset to study and explain their spatial patterns in an Asian tropical forest. Location Borneo, Southeast Asia. Methods We combined stem density, basal area, community wood density and AGB data from 83 locations in Borneo with an environmental database containing elevation, climate and soil variables. The Akaike information criterion was used to select models and environmental variables that best explained the observed values of stem density, basal area, community wood density and AGB. These models were used to extrapolate these parameters across Borneo. Results We found that wood density, stem density, basal area and AGB respond significantly, but differentially, to the environment. AGB was only correlated with basal area, but not with stem density and community wood specific gravity. Main conclusions Unlike results from Amazonian forests, soil fertility was an important positive correlate for AGB in Borneo while community wood density, which is a main driver of AGB in the Neotropics, did not correlate with AGB in Borneo. Also, Borneo's average AGB of 457.1 Mg ha?1 was c. 60% higher than the Amazonian average of 288.6 Mg ha?1. We find evidence that this difference might be partly explained by the high density of large wind‐dispersed Dipterocarpaceae in Borneo, which need to be tall and emergent to disperse their seeds. Our results emphasize the importance of Bornean forests as carbon sinks and sources due to their high carbon storage capacity.  相似文献

Two separate citrate synthases from the extremely thermophilic bacterium Rhodothermus marinus have been identified and purified. One of the enzymes is a hexameric protein and is the first thermostable, hexameric citrate synthase to be isolated. The other is a dimeric enzyme, which is also thermostable but possesses both citrate synthase and 2-methyl citrate synthase activities. 2-Methyl citrate synthase uses propionyl-coenzyme A as one of its substrates and in Escherichia coli, for example, it has been implicated in the metabolism of propionate. However, no growth of R. marinus was observed using minimal medium with propionate as the sole carbon source, and both hexameric and dimeric enzymes were produced irrespective of whether propionate was included in the growth medium. The data are discussed with respect to the evolutionary relationships between the known hexameric and dimeric citrate synthases and 2-methyl citrate synthase.  相似文献
