Relationships between Training Load,Salivary Cortisol Responses and Performance during Season Training in Middle and Long Distance Runners

Purpose

Monitoring training from a multifactorial point of view is of great importance in elite endurance athletes. This study aims to analyze the relationships between indicators of training load, hormonal status and neuromuscular performance, and to compare these values with competition performance, in elite middle and long-distance runners.

Method

Fifteen elite middle and long-distance runners (12 men, 3 women; age = 26.3±5.1 yrs) were measured for training volume, training zone and session rate of perceived exertion (RPE) (daily), countermovement jump (CMJ) and salivary free cortisol (weekly) for 39 weeks (i.e., the whole season). Competition performance was also observed throughout the study, registering the season best and worst competitions.

Results

Season average salivary free cortisol concentrations correlate significantly with CMJ (r = −0.777) and RPE (r = 0.551). Also, weekly averages of CMJ significantly correlates with RPE (r = −0.426), distance run (r = −0.593, p<0.001) and training zone (r = 0.437, p<0.05). Finally, it was found that the CMJ (+8.5%, g = 0.65) and the RPE (−17.6%, g = 0.94) measured the week before the best competition performance of the season were significantly different compared with the measurement conducted the week before the season’s worst competition performance.

Conclusions

Monitoring weekly measurements of CMJ and RPE could be recommended to control training process of such athletes in a non-invasive, field-based, systematic way.     

Civic integration policies from below: accounting for processes of convergence and divergence in four European cities

The introduction of integration tests on a pre-entry or post-arrival basis has drawn attention to changing national integration policies. Yet, at the local level, language and civic culture courses have often been implemented before the development of national programmes. The way these policies came into place and the extent to which they responded to similar challenges has often been overlooked. This article explores the development of these measures in four cities – Stuttgart, Vienna, Barcelona and Turin – to find out which mechanisms account for convergence in policymaking. Integration courses present traits of similarity in their contents and target groups; however, this does not imply a consistent process towards convergence. Local introduction initiatives are the product of local policy arenas, which display different policy frames of migrant integration. On the other hand, new legislation and changes in the available financial resources for integration appear to be crucial factors that trigger divergence.     

Effectiveness of cognitive behaviour therapy for the treatment of catastrophisation in patients with fibromyalgia: a randomised controlled trial

Introduction  

No randomised, controlled trials have been conducted to date on the efficacy of psychological and pharmacological treatments of pain catastrophising (PC) in patients with fibromyalgia. Our aim in this study was to assess the effectiveness of cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) and the recommended pharmacological treatment (RPT) compared with treatment as usual (TAU) at the primary care level for the treatment of PC in fibromyalgia patients.     

The structure of Erb1-Ytm1 complex reveals the functional importance of a high-affinity binding between two β-propellers during the assembly of large ribosomal subunits in eukaryotes

Ribosome biogenesis is one of the most essential pathways in eukaryotes although it is still not fully characterized. Given the importance of this process in proliferating cells, it is obvious that understanding the macromolecular details of the interactions that take place between the assembly factors, ribosomal proteins and nascent pre-rRNAs is essentially required for the development of new non-genotoxic treatments for cancer. Herein, we have studied the association between the WD40-repeat domains of Erb1 and Ytm1 proteins. These are essential factors for the biogenesis of 60S ribosomal subunits in eukaryotes that form a heterotrimeric complex together with the also essential Nop7 protein. We provide the crystal structure of a dimer formed by the C-terminal part of Erb1 and Ytm1 from Chaetomium thermophilum at 2.1 Å resolution. Using a multidisciplinary approach we show that the β-propeller domains of these proteins interact in a novel manner that leads to a high-affinity binding. We prove that a point mutation within the interface of the complex impairs the interaction between the two proteins and negatively affects growth and ribosome production in yeast. Our study suggests insights into the association of the Erb1-Ytm1 dimer with pre-ribosomal particles.     

Partial deletion of 4p16 band in a ring chromosome and wolf syndrome

Summary A new case of ring chromosome 4 in a 2-day-old female child with multiple malformations is described. By means of the GTG-banding technique, a karyotype 46,XX,r(4), (p16q35) was determined. The characteristics of the child's karyotype and the relationship with the structure of the chromosome, especially the location of the deletion that produces the syndrome, are compared with previous reports.     

Experimental acute pancreatitis is enhanced in mice with tissue nonspecific alkaline phoshatase haplodeficiency due to modulation of neutrophils and acinar cells

Tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) has a well established role in bone homeostasis and in hepatic/biliary conditions. In addition, TNAP is expressed in the inflamed intestine and is relevant to T and B lymphocyte function. TNAP KO mice are only viable for a few days, but TNAP^+/? haplodeficient mice are viable. Acute pancreatitis was induced by repeated caerulein injection in WT and TNAP^+/? mice. TNAP^+/? mice presented an increased expression of Cxcl2, Ccl2, Selplg (P-selectin ligand), Il6 and Il1b in the pancreas. Freshly isolated acinar cells showed a dramatic upregulation of Cxcl1, Cxcl2, Ccl2, Il6, Selpg or Bax in both pancreatitis groups. TNAP^+/? cells displayed a 2-fold higher expression of Cxcl2, and a smaller increase in Il6. These findings could be partly replicated by in vitro treatment of primary acinar cells with caerulein. Furthermore, the proinflammatory effect on acinar cells could be partially reproduced in wild type cells treated with the TNAP inhibitor levamisole. TNAP mRNA levels were also markedly upregulated by pancreatitis in acinar cells. Neutrophil infiltration (MRP8+ cells) and activation (IL-6 and TNF production in LPS treated primary neutrophils) were increased in TNAP^+/? vs WT mice. Neutrophil depletion greatly attenuated inflammation, indicating that this cell type is mainly responsible for the higher inflammatory status of TNAP^+/? mice. In conclusion, our results show that altered TNAP expression results in heightened pancreatic inflammation, which may be explained by an augmented response of neutrophils and by a higher sensitivity of acinar cells to caerulein injury.     

An Entangled Model for Sustainability Indicators

Nowadays the challenge for humanity is to find pathways towards sustainable development. Decision makers require a set of sustainability indicators to know if the sustainability strategies are following those pathways. There are more than one hundred sustainability indicators but they differ on their relative importance according to the size of the locality and change on time. The resources needed to follow these sustainability indicators are scarce and in some instances finite, especially in smaller regions. Therefore strategies to select set of these indicators are useful for decision makers responsible for monitoring sustainability. In this paper we propose a model for the identification and selection of a set of sustainability indicators that adequately represents human systems. In developing this model, we applied evolutionary dynamics in a space where sustainability indicators are fundamental entities interconnected by an interaction matrix. we used a fixed interaction that simulates the current context for the city of Cuernavaca, México as an example. We were able to identify and define relevant sets indicators for the system by using the Pareto principle. In this case we identified a set of sixteen sustainability indicators with more than 80% of the total strength. This set presents resilience to perturbations. For the Tangled Nature framework we provided a manner of treating different contexts (i.e., cities, counties, states, regions, countries, continents or the whole planet), dealing with small dimensions. This model provides decision makers with a valuable tool to select sustainability indicators set for towns, cities, regions, countries, continents or the entire planet according to a coevolutionary framework. The social legitimacy can arise from the fact that each individual indicator must be selected from those that are most important for the subject community.     

Selective resorption in nutritive phagocytes of the sea urchin Anthocidaris crassispina

Phagocytic resorption during spermatogenesis was studied in the sea urchin Anthocidaris crassispina. Nutritive phagocytes in gonad absorbed both waste sperm cells and residual bodies discarded from maturing spermatids, and these materials were subsequently compartmented in heterophagosomes. Based on 180 heterophagosomes examined by transmission electron microscopy, over 99% of heterophagosomes contained either residual bodies or sperm cells only. Simultaneous resorption of sperm cells and residual bodies in a heterophagosome was uncommon, with only approximately 0.56% occurrence, suggesting that heterophagosomes have a selective resorption ability in nutritive phagocytes.
