Spontaneous smiles are facial movements that are characterized by lip corner raises that occur during irregular sleep or drowsiness without known external or internal causes. They are shown by human infants and infant chimpanzees. These smiles are considered to be the developmental origin of smiling and laughter. There are some case studies showing that spontaneous smiles occur in Japanese macaques. The goals of this study were to investigate whether newborn Japanese macaques show a considerable number of spontaneous smiles thus to examine the mechanism of them. Seven newborn Japanese macaques were observed in a room for an average of 44 min, and incidental sleeping situations were monitored twice. All seven participants showed spontaneous smiles at least once during the observation. They showed 8.29 spontaneous smiles in average (SD = 10.89; 58 smiles in total), all found in the state of REM sleep. Thirty-nine of the 58 smiles were produced on the left side of the mouth. These characteristics were similar to those of spontaneous smiles in human infants. This is the first evidence that macaques as well as hominoids show a considerable number of spontaneous smiles. These phenomena may facilitate the development of the zygomaticus major muscle, which is implicated in smiling-like facial expressions.  相似文献

Autophagy plays a crucial role in host defence by facilitating the degradation of invading bacteria such as Group A Streptococcus (GAS). GAS‐containing autophagosome‐like vacuoles (GcAVs) form when GAS‐targeting autophagic membranes entrap invading bacteria. However, the membrane origin and the precise molecular mechanism that underlies GcAV formation remain unclear. In this study, we found that Rab17 mediates the supply of membrane from recycling endosomes (REs) to GcAVs. We showed that GcAVs contain the RE marker transferrin receptor (TfR). Colocalization analyses demonstrated that Rab17 colocalized effectively with GcAV. Rab17 and TfR were visible as punctate structures attached to GcAVs and the Rab17‐positive dots were recruited to the GAS‐capturing membrane. Overexpression of Rab17 increased the TfR‐positive GcAV content, whereas expression of the dominant‐negative Rab17 form (Rab17 N132I) caused a decrease, thereby suggesting the involvement of Rab17 in RE–GcAV fusion. The efficiency of GcAV formation was lower in Rab17 N132I‐overexpressing cells. Furthermore, knockdown of Rabex‐5, the upstream activator of Rab17, reduced the GcAV formation efficiency. These results suggest that Rab17 and Rab17‐mediated REs are involved in GcAV formation. This newly identified function of Rab17 in supplying membrane from REs to GcAVs demonstrates that RE functions as a primary membrane source during antibacterial autophagy.  相似文献

To investigate the host specificity of Ophiocordyceps nutans against hemipteran insects in the wild, we determined the relationship between host species and rDNA-internal transcribed spacer (ITS) variation in O. nutans. The analyzed fungal specimens infected 16 host species belonging to four families of Hemiptera. The molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that O. nutans can be classified into two types corresponding to their host families. The genetic distance values between the two types were very remote (>0.084), and the strains of O. nutans that parasitized Halyomorpha halys and Plautia crossota stali, well-known insect pests, formed a subclade. The results suggest that O. nutans should have host specificity which can be valuable for developing biological control agents against specific hemipteran insects.  相似文献

The correlation between foliage-canopy structure and vertical woody species distribution was examined in seven climax forests ranging from alpine tree limit to tropical rain forest. Foliage density was measured by two-dimensional canopy tomography using photographs. Both foliage density and the vertical species density (the number of woody species having a maximum height within a vertical 1 m) were high in the upper canopy of warm-temperate and subtropical forests, but they were high at lower stratums in the tropical rain forest. Two variables correlated significantly despite the differences in foliage-canopy structures. In contrast to evergreen broad-leaved forests, a clear correlation could not be detected in northern cool-temperate and sub-alpine forests. A possible reason for species convergence in the foliage dense stratum is that species with maximum height in that stratum may be able to survive in the stratum due to symmetrical crown-to-crown interaction. If the maximum height of dwarf species is less than the foliage dense stratum, it may be difficult to survive in the community. The lack of correlation in northern forests may be due to poor canopy tree flora and a mixture of different life forms (non-sprouting trees and sprouting shrubs).  相似文献

Questions: What is the effect of the 19th century (pre‐industrialization) landscape pattern on the recovery of climax forests in cool‐temperate mountain areas dominated by Fagus crenata (Japanese beech)? Location: Secondary forests on Mt. Daisen, western Japan. Methods: Vegetation patterns before and after industrialization were obtained from maps drawn in 1898 and 1979. Tree measurements were made in 12 plots in 1997. Correlation between current Fagus crenata dominance and forest edge in the 19th century was analysed using an S‐shaped regression curve. Fagus juvenile density was counted in the plots, and distances from each plot to the five nearest mother trees were measured to determine the dispersal kernel. Results: Secondary grassland covered a substantial area in 1898, whereas forest covered most of the area in 1997. Fagus was dominant in places in the interior forest 100 years ago, and mature Fagus trees were absent in secondary forests that had been grasslands in 1898. The expected number of juveniles decreased to one individual per 100 m2 at 43.5 m from the mother tree. Conclusions: The pre‐industrialization landscape greatly affected recovery of Fagus forest. Forests found on the 1898 vegetation map might have acted as refugia for Fagus. The limited dispersal ability of Fagus suggests that it would take many generations (several hundred years) for Fagus forests to recover at the centre of what had been grasslands in the 19th century.  相似文献

AspT is an electrogenic aspartate:alanine exchange protein that represents the vectorial component of a proton-motive metabolic cycle found in some strains of Tetragenococcus halophilus. AspT is the sole member of a new family, the Aspartate: Alanine Exchanger (AAE) family, in secondary transporters, according to the computational classification proposed by Saier et al. (http://www.biology.ucsd.edu/~msaier/transport/). We analyzed the topology of AspT biochemically, by using fusion methods in combination with alkaline phosphatase or beta-lactamase. These results suggested that AspT has a unique topology; 8 TMS, a large cytoplasmic loop (183 amino acids) between TMS5 and TMS6, and N- and C-termini that both face the periplasm. These results demonstrated a unique 2D-structure of AspT as the novel AAE family.  相似文献

A new preparation method for direct counting of bacteria in liquid samples with fluorescence microscope was developed using a glass slide coated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane and ring-shaped polyester seal as a retainer. The experimental steps of this method were spotting samples onto the coated slides with the seal, drying under vacuum, staining with SYBR Green II, drying and covering with immersion oil and coverslip to allow counting. This simplified method provided consistent results when compared with the conventional filtration method for fluorescence microscopy, and is rapid, inexpensive and reproducible.  相似文献
