Phylogeographic reconstructions using mitochondrial DNA sequences from both the control region and the cytochrome b gene demonstrated that two disjunct populations be recognized as Trachurus murphyi and Trachurus symmetricus. The species have been isolated for at least 250 000 years.  相似文献

The Mediterranean shrub Phillyrea angustifolia is one of the few plants that display androdioecy, a rare breeding system in which males co-occur with hermaphrodites. However, it has been difficult to account for male frequencies previously documented for this species, which have frequently been higher than 0.5. Here we present sex-ratio data from 13 sites in Spain and Portugal that throw further light on the maintenance of androdioecy in P. angustifolia . The inferred proportion of males in these populations was around 0.3, substantially lower that 0.5 and concurring with theoretical predictions for androdioecy. Differences in the proportion of hermaphrodites in flower between "stressed" and "nonstressed" sites suggest the existence of an important life-history trade-off between fruit production and the rate at which plants recover from recurrent disturbances such as fire. The reduced frequency of flowering by hermaphrodites relative to males may help to explain the maintenance of androdioecy in this long-lived, woody species.  相似文献

On the central coast of Chile, distribution of body size in Graus nigra varied with tidal pool height. With the objective of determining whether environmental temperature is one of the possible causes which explains the observed distribution pattern, two behavioural responses were analysed during an experimental period of increasing water temperature: number of opercular movements (an indirect measure of energy expenditure) and activity levels. The interactions of temperature × time and body size × time had a significant effect on the number of opercular movements. At low temperatures (13–15° C), large fish reached a maximum number of opercular movements, while small fish reached a maximum only at high temperatures (23–25° C). The interaction temperature × time had a significant effect on activity levels of different body sizes. In general, large fish appeared to be less active than small fish, however, at very high temperatures (24–26° C) all individuals increased their activity levels. These data indicate that small fish are acclimatized to live in a wider range of temperatures (13–23° C), and, for fish of all body sizes, the highest temperatures (23–26° C) probably constitute a suboptimal microhabitat. Strong territoriality was observed, with large individuals displacing smaller individuals. These data suggest that temperature is an important factor in explaining why large individuals are not present in high tidal pools (high temperatures), whereas territoriality explains why small individuals are not in low tidal pools (habitat of large individuals).  相似文献

It is now clear that astroglial cells actively contribute to both the generation and flow of information within the central nervous system. In the hypothalamus, astrocytes regulate the secretory activity of neuroendocrine neurons. A small subset of these neurons secrete luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), a neuropeptide essential for sexual development and adult reproductive function. Astrocytes stimulate LHRH secretion via cell-cell signaling mechanisms involving growth factors recognized by receptors with either serine/threonine or tyrosine kinase activity. Two members of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family and their respective tyrosine kinase receptors appear to play key roles in this regulatory process. Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGFalpha) and its distant congeners, the neuregulins (NRGs), are produced in hypothalamic astrocytes. They stimulate LHRH secretion indirectly, via activation of erbB-1/erbB-2 and erbB-4/erbB-2 receptor complexes also located on astrocytes. Activation of these receptors leads to release of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)), which then binds to specific receptors on LHRH neurons to elicit LHRH secretion. Gonadal steroids facilitate this glia-to-neuron communication process by acting at three different steps along the signaling pathway. They (a) increase astrocytic gene expression of at least one of the EGF-related ligands (TGFalpha), (b) increase expression of at least two of the receptors (erbB-4 and erbB-2), and (c) enhance the LHRH response to PGE(2) by up-regulating in LHRH neurons the expression of specific PGE(2) receptor isoforms. Focal overexpression of TGFalpha in either the median eminence or preoptic area of the hypothalamus accelerates puberty. Conversely, blockade of either TGFalpha or NRG hypothalamic actions delays the process. Thus, both TGFalpha and NRGs appear to be physiological components of the central neuroendocrine mechanism controlling the initiation of female puberty. By facilitating growth factor signaling pathways in the hypothalamus, ovarian steroids accelerate the pace and progression of the pubertal process.  相似文献

Environmental heterogeneity shapes the traits of natural populations, including space use and burrowing behavior. We studied the red viscacha rat (Tympanoctomys barrerae), a semifossorial rodent with patchy distribution in drylands of west-central Argentina, to provide ecological data on habitat and burrow features of this specialist species. We collected data on 165 burrows and 55 individuals from 2017–2018 and observed correlations between different vegetation types, vegetation diversity, and physical attributes (e.g., soil hardness). A high number of individual red viscacha rats was negatively associated with herbs. The number of burrow entrances was positively associated with harder soils and negatively associated with vegetation cover. Our results suggest that the species' patchy distribution is strongly associated with environmental heterogeneity of these arid environments, and consequently provide an essential step towards conserving their populations across their geographic range.  相似文献

Gigartina skottsbergii is a red seaweed used as raw material for extracting carrageenans, constituting an important economic resource for Chile. In 2009, extraction in the Magellan region reached 15,064 t. The growing demand has adversely affected the sustainability of natural beds, creating an interest in the culture of this resource. In order to provide information relevant to the culture and regeneration of this seaweed, the present study addresses the effects of different light intensities on the growth of G. skottsbergii gametophytes and tetrasporophytes during the early stages of development. Mature reproductive fronds were induced to release spores in the laboratory by a drying process. Gametophytes cultured at different light intensities showed an increase in diameter, which reached 519.13?±?108.95 μm with 4 μmol photons m?2 s?1, while tetrasporophytes showed a greater increase in diameter, reaching 714.11?±?116.45 μm with 8 μmol photons m?2 s?1. Results indicate that both stages of the reproductive cycle are influenced by different light intensities within a limited range. Therefore, both phases require different and specific ranges of light intensity.  相似文献

Aberrant mucin O-glycosylation often occurs in different cancers and is characterized by immature expression of simple mucin-type carbohydrates. At present, there are some controversial reports about the Tn antigen (GalNAcα-O-Ser/Thr) expression and there is a great lack of information about the [UDP-N-acetyl-α-d-galactosamine:polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase (GalNAc-Ts)] expression in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). To gain insight in these issues we evaluated the Tn antigen expression in CLL patient samples using two Tn binding proteins with different fine specificity. We also studied the expression from 14 GalNAc-Ts genes in CLL patients by RT-PCR. Our results have provided additional information about the expression level of the Tn antigen, suggesting that a low density of Tn residues is expressed in CLL cells. We also found that GALNT11 was expressed in CLL cells and normal T cell whereas little or no expression was found in normal B cells. Based on these results, GALNT11 expression was assessed by qPCR in a cohort of 50 CLL patients. We found significant over-expression of GALNT11 in 96% of B–CLL cells when compared to normal B cells. Moreover, we confirmed the expression of this enzyme at the protein level. Finally we found that GALNT11 expression was significantly associated with the mutational status of the immunoglobulin heavy chain variable region (IGHV), [?2(1) = 18.26; P < 0.0001], lipoprotein lipase expression [?2(1) = 13.72; P = 0.0002] and disease prognosis [?2(1) = 15.49; P < 0.0001]. Our evidence suggests that CLL patient samples harbor aberrant O-glycosylation highlighted by Tn antigen expression and that the over-expression of GALNT11 constitutes a new molecular marker for CLL.  相似文献
