L’andrologie dans les écrits d’Hippocrate (460–376 av. J.-C.)

Hippocrates left considerable written works covering the whole of medicine. A large part of his work deals with andrology. A review of the chapters concerning fertility and sexuality demonstrates the astonishingly high level of Hippocratic knowledge in the field of andrology.     

François Raspail (1794–1878) grand savant, homme d’état et vulgarisateur de la médecine: A propos de ses écrits andrologiques originaux

Raspail was a great scientist and politician. His work concerned very different fields such as journalism, agriculture, meteorology, mineralogy, geology, botany, chemistry, biology, and medicine. Andrology occupies a considerable place in Raspail’s medical work and deserves to be reported for its originality and medical non-conformity.

Through this paper, we try to elucidate the most probable diagnosis of Akhenaten’s illness.

The ancient Greeks used various methods of contraception, such as coitus interruptus, coitus reservatus, coitus obstructus, anal coitus, the application of ointments onto the penis, medicines, sorcery, etc. In the context of family planning, to avoid large families, they also resorted to termination of pregnancy (abortion), infanticide and exposure.     

Léonard de Vinci (1452–1519): andrologue avant la lettre

Leonardo da Vinci devoted 41 years of his lifetime to anatomy and anatomical drawing and opened new horizons in these two disciplines. He is therefore justly considered to be the father of modern anatomy. Considering the great number of his anatomical drawings dealing with the male urogenital tract and its function, Leonardo da Vinci can also be considered to be the father of andrology.
