The field of regenerative medicine (RM) faces many challenges, including funding. Framing the analysis in terms of institutional politics, valuation studies and “technologies of knowledge”, the paper highlights growing debates about payment for RM in the UK, setting this alongside escalating policy debates about “value”. We draw on interviews and publicly available material to identify the interacting and conflicting positions of institutional stakeholders. It is concluded that while there is some common ground between institutional stakeholders such as industry and health system gatekeepers, there is significant conflict about reward systems, technology assessment methodologies and payment scenarios; a range of mostly conditional payment schemes and non-mainstream routes are being experimented with. We argue that current developments highlight a fundamental conflict between a concern for the societal value of medical technologies in a resource-limited system and a concern for engineering new reward and payment models to accommodate RM innovations.  相似文献

Within-colony kin discrimination has not been demonstrated conclusively for any social insect, perhaps partly because highly polymorphic genetic markers necessary to assess within-colony relatednesses have only recently become available. We use microsatellite loci to investigate within-colony kin discrimination in behavioural interactions in the neotropical multiple-queen wasp, Parachartergus colobopterus. Within-colony kin discrimination would be particularly advantageous in this species since average genetic relatedness among colony members overall is low (0.32 =/- 0.06), compared to the relatedness value between full sisters of 0.75. Using seven colonies of individually marked females, we recorded behavioural interactions that were cooperative (222 grooming, 2438 feeding), aggressive (511 body or wing biting, 240 mandible biting) or neutral (1676 antennating). We expected cooperative behaviours to favour closer kin and aggressive behaviours to be directed towards more distant kin, but found that none of the behaviours we investigated showed discrimination on the basis of relatedness. We could have detected a difference in relatedness values of as little as between 0.03 and 0.12, depending on the behaviour being analysed. Thus, we found no evidence for kin discrimination in within-colony behaviour in this species.  相似文献

Summary The tympanic organ ofSpodoptera frugiperda, Mocis latipes, Erebus odorata (Noctuidae) andMaenas jussiae (Arctiidae) was stimulated with acoustic stimuli of 20 kHz, 45 ms and 5 s duration, and intensities ranging from 30 to 100 dB. The electric activity of the auditory receptors was recorded at the tympanic nerve with a stainless steel hook electrode. In all of these moth species there is an intensity range (ca. 20 dB) in which the response of each auditory receptor (A1 and A2 cells) to 45 ms pulses varies in a linear relation to the logarithm of stimulus intensity. For intensities higher than this value, depending on the species and the cell analysed, the spike discharge may continue to increase, may saturate or may diminish (Fig. 2). InE. odorata andM. latipes the A1-cell response shows a decrease for stimulus intensities higher than 30 dB above the threshold. In the former species there is a statistically significant linear relation between the A2-cell response and the decrease of the A1-cell response, but this is not the case inM. latipes (Fig. 3). The similarity of the responses ofE. odorata to those described inEmpyreuma pugione (Coro and Pérez 1984) suggest that also in this noctuid species one may assume that the A2 cell inhibits the A1 receptor. In all of these moth species there is a maximum firing rate of the auditory cells at the beginning of the response to pure tones of 5 s and an exponential decrease of their discharge frequency with the course of time (Fig. 5). The analysed species differ in the adaptation rates of their auditory receptors. In all of these species the A2 cell adapts more rapidly than the A1 cell. In most of these species the stimulus intensity influences the adaptation rate of the auditory receptors (Fig. 7). These results are compared with data obtained by other authors, and it is concluded that there are more interspecific differences in the physiological characteristics of the auditory receptors in noctuoid species than those reported so far.Abbreviation AP action potential  相似文献

Exercise-induced hypoxaemia (EIH) in master athletes may be related to a diminished exercise hyper- pnoea. The aim of this study was to determine whether EIH is associated with a change in the sensitivity of the ventilation response to activation of the central chemoreceptors. The ventilation response to CO2 was measured in nine elderly untrained men (UT) [mean age 66.3 (SEM 3.1) years] and nine master athletes (MA) [mean age 62.7 (SEM 0.8) years] at rest, during moderate exercise (40% maximal oxygen uptake, O2max), and during strenuous exercise (70% O2max) using the rebreathing method. Our results showed that the ventilation response to CO2 did not differ with endurance training and/or exercise, that the threshold of the CO2 response (Th) increased with exercise (P < 0.001), that the increase in Th in MA was higher than in UT between rest and moderate exercise [ΔTh0–40: 8.55 (SEM 1.8) vs 3.06 (SEM 1.72) mmHg, P < 0.05], and that ΔTh0–40 and Th during moderate exercise were negatively correlated with arterial O2 saturation during maximal exercise (r = 0.50, P<0.05). We concluded therefore that exercise-induced hypoxaemia in master athletes may not be due to a lower ventilation response to CO2, but may be partly related to a greater increase in Th during moderate exercise. An integrated process for the indoor production of 13C labelled PUFA from Phaeodactylum tricornutum is presented. The core of the process is a bubble column photobioreactor from which the exhaust gas from the reactor is returned to the culture by a low pressure compressor. To avoid accumulation of dissolved oxygen in the culture medium, the exhaust gas is bubbled through a sodium sulphite solution before returning it to the reactor. Carbon is removed from the medium before inoculating the alga, then labelled 13CO2 is injected for pH control and carbon supply. The reactor has been operated in semicontinuous mode at a dilution rate of 0.01 h–1, a biomass productivity of 0.1 g L–1 d–1 being obtained. Under this conditions both pH and dissolved oxygen were correctly controlled and the adequacy of the system for autotrophic production of labelled biomass was demonstrated. Analysis by GC-MS revealed that the fatty acids content of the biomass obtained was 10% d.wt., the content of eicosapentaenoic acid was 2.5% d.wt. All the fatty acids were labelled, more that 90% of the carbon present in these fatty acids was 13C. Element analysis of biomass and supernatant showed that 59.5% of injected carbon was assimilated into the biomass whereas 33% remained in the supernatant, and 7.5% remained undetected. Due to the high cost of 13CO2 different strategies for the optimisation of labelled carbon use are proposed.  相似文献

The expansion of crop lands and increased logging for charcoal production in the Brazilian savannahs (cerrados) has reduced richness and abundance of Meliponini bees. This may be a consequence of limitation in the availability of potential nesting substrate. The role of a cerrado-tree (Caryocar brasiliense) in providing nesting substrate for Melipona quadrifasciata quadrifasciata was evaluated. Tree (p= 0.006) and branch (p= 0.001) diameters, number of suitable branches (n= 513), height of the trees and availability of trees suitable for bee nesting were all important to the conservation of M. quadrifasciata. However, the high availability of nesting substrate did not seem to limit nest density nor cause the clumped pattern of nest distributions found for the study site. Nests (n= 48) were found mainly in individuals of C. brasiliense (n= 46) suggesting an active tree selection. In addition, nests located on the highest branches (mean = 4.6 m, sd = 1 m, n= 46) had lower probability of being extirpated by human honey collectors.  相似文献

Spatial patterns are important characteristics of the forest and theycan reveal such things as successional status and ecological characteristics ofthe species. We tested the hypothesis that spatial distribution will bedifferent, depending on whether the species is intolerant or tolerant to shade.We assessed the spatial distribution of trees (> 4 cm dbh) andjuveniles in eight laurel forest plots. A univariate spatial analysis(performed with Ripley's K1) showed that all tree species havesignificantaggregation at short distances (2 m). Nevertheless, two groups ofspecies could be differentiated: Erica scoparia,Myrica faya and Ilex canariensisshowed a tendency for aggregation at large distances (larger than 6m)while L. azorica and Prunuslusitanicashowed aggregation only at shorter distances. Ripley's BivariateK1,2 analyses showed no significant differences in the spatialdistribution ofanalyzed species pairs from a null model. Only Laurusazoricahad a sufficient sample size for analysis of juvenile distribution. Aunivariateanalysis revealed thatL. azorica seedlings (stems < 50 cm high)were clumped in some plots up to 5 m, but this was not consistent.Saplings (stems > 50 cm high and < 4 cm dbh)didnot show strong clumping even at short distances. L.azoricasaplings had no significant aggregation with, nor repulsionfrom, adults of the same or different species. Spatial patterns of the speciesshould be considered in the development of restoration plans of the laurelforest 90%of which has disappeared or been intensively disturbed on Tenerife Island.  相似文献
