The rate of translocation of naturally-loaded, radiolabelledassimilate has been studied in leaves of wheat treated withIAA. The velocity was measured directly by following the movementof 11C-labelled material along the leaf. The kinetics of translocationwere also estimated by using a two-compartment model to calculatethe rate constant of disappearance of 14C from the fed area.IAA was applied at three different sites on the leaf and atvarious times up to 24 h before 14CO2 feeding. No effects ofIAA were observed on: (1) direction and velocity of transport;(2) loading of assimilate into the phloem; or (3) the site andkinetics of unloading. These results are discussed with referenceto the movement of IAA along the transport path and the useof different tissues as experimental systems.  相似文献

A virus obtained from pelargonium cvs Irene and Paul Crampel appears to differ from any previously reported; although symptomless in most pelargonium cvs tested, it caused colour break in the flowers of two seedling clones. It seems uncommon in pelargoniums. The virus was readily transmitted by inoculation of sap, but not by Myzus persicae with short feeds, by dodder or through seed. It infected only fifteen of 100 species tested in six of thirty-five plant families. Pelargoniums were freed from the virus by heat-treatment. The virus remained infective after 10 min at 85 oC, 3 wk at 20 oC or 27 wk at 2 oC; it was infective at 1/500000 dilution of Nicotiana clevelandii or Chenopodium quinoa sap. Purified preparations were readily made by several methods, and contained isometric particles c. 30 nm diameter. Although a good antigen, the virus was serologically unrelated to any of forty-two isometric viruses. In immunoelectrophoresis, the virus moved as a single antigenic component towards the cathode. It gave a single, specific zone in density-gradient centrifugation, and one moving component (s020 w= 125 S) in analytical centrifugation. The virus contained one protein of mol. wt. c. 41000. The present cryptogram of the virus is (R)/*: */*:S/S:S/*, and the name pelargonium flower-break virus is proposed.  相似文献

SUMMARY: A method of assessing the sporicidal efficiency of a UHT milk sterilizing plant operating on water is described. Water heavily contaminated with spores of a strain of Bacillus subtilis was filtered, after treatment in the plant, through membrane filters and the surviving spores estimated by incubation of the membranes in nutrient agar. With this plant a temperature of c . 135° caused a 99·99999% kill of B. subtilis spores. Confirmation of the lethal effects of temperatures above 135° was obtained by passing treated water into 10 gal churns containing sterile concentrated nutrient broth and incubating the churns.  相似文献

The resistance and capacitance of the membranes of Nitella translucenshave been measured by direct current and alternating currentmethods. Current of the order of 10-7 amp. was injected intothe cell by means of a conventional Ag, AgCl-3N KCl glass microelectrodeinserted into the vacuole of the cell. The change of potentialacross the membrane was recorded by two other internal microelectrodeswhich had been inserted into the cell at known distances fromthe current-injecting electrode. In the direct-current experimentsthe input current was in the form of a square pulse, while sinusoidalcurrents of frequency 25 cycles per second were used in thealternating current experiments. The cell was treated as a shortlength of coaxial cable and from the measurements the followingparameters could be obtained: the space constant (), the membraneresistance (Rm) and the membrane capacitance (Cm). The valuesof Rm ranged from 6.7 to 36 K ohm cm.2 (mean of 21.4 K ohm cm.2)and those of ranged from 1.5 to 5.7 cm. (mean of 2.6 cm.).The capacitance value was about I µF cm.-2 These results are discussed within the framework of our knowledgeof these parameters for other cells, particularly plant cells.The measured electrical resistance is shown to be at least tentimes less than the value estimated from the passive fluxesof the principal ions K, Na, and Cl. It is suggested that thisdiscrepancy, which is usually attributed to non-independentmovement of these ions, could be partially explained on electro-osmoticgrounds. The value of the capacitance is very close to thatwhich is usually obtained for other cell membranes. One exceptionallylow value for Nitella has been quoted in the literature. Urease is present in considerable quantity in the cotyledonsof Citrullus, though elsewhere in the plant it is present onlyin traces or is absent; urease activity in the cotyledons changesduring growth, showing an initial rise followed by an abruptdrop almost to zero. These changes, under a wide variety ofconditions, are not correlated with those in the major nitrogenfractions; they are, however, closely correlated with cell extensionand the associated changes in water content and respiration.A connexion with chlorophyll formation is possible but unlikely.It is suggested that the changes in cotyledonary urease constitutemerely one aspect of the ‘protoplasmic differentiation’that takes place as a cell matures.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Encarsia tricolor Förster is a heteronomous hyperparasitoid: females develop as primary endoparasitoids of Homoptera, whereas males develop hyperparasitically in primary endoparasitoids, including conspecific females.
  • 2 When offered pupae of Encarsia inaron (Walker) or conspecific pupae, E.tricolor showed a distinct preference to exploit E.inaron for male production.
  • 3 Parasitoids were given the opportunity to gain different types of ovipositional experience on male and female hosts and were then offered patches containing mixtures of male and female hosts in various ratios. The mean sex ratio which they laid was not dependent on the relative availability of each type of host, whereas prior ovipositional experience had a significant effect.
  • 4 Adaptive reasons for the observed oviposition strategies are suggested.

On well drained sites in the subalpine tract of the Bogong High Plains, Victoria, the distribution of grassland, dominated by Poa spp., and closed heathland, dominated by Prostanthera cuneata, can be correlated with patterns of maximum and minimum air temperature, and the accumulation and persistence of snow. Both maximum and minimum temperatures are lower, and the accumulation and persistence of snow is less in grassland, the dominant community of gentle slopes and hollows, than in closed heathland, the dominant community on steeper, leeward slopes. On gentle slopes and in hollows, the development of closed heath may be limited by the accumulation of cold air, relatively low temperatures and exposure to strong winds. However, on leeward slopes where snow persists the longest (until mid-late December), the development of heath may be limited by a shortening of the growing season. The distribution of grassland and heathland, especially the limits to the distribution of the heath, may also be affected by infrequent climatic events, such as the co-incidence of unusually low temperatures during winters when snow cover is meagre.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. It is argued that modern limnology is excessively concerned with the study of fresh waters in the northern temperate region. Limnology has been and is unbalanced in its interests and emphases and, as a result, many widely held limnological concepts need revision. 2. The genesis of the argument is outlined. It involved the initial assumption that Australia was limnologically distinctive. Later, it was realized that since most of the world is arid, semi-arid, tropical or semi-tropical, Australia was much less distinctive than originally thought. 3. Other limnological assumptions considered in the paper concern saline lakes and salinization, the importance and nature of temporary bodies of standing fresh water, biological diversity in tropical fresh waters, the evolutionary importance of permanent freshwater lakes, and the global applicability of the River Continuum Concept. Consideration suggests that some widely-held views on these matters are erroneous. 4. Thus, saline lakes are more important (scientifically, commercially), widespread and numerous environments than is generally thought. Salinization is a significant environmental hazard for many rivers in semiarid regions. Temporary bodies of standing fresh water are geographically widespread and abundant aquatic environments with high species diversity, and in which many species have restricted distributions and low dispersal abilities. Biological diversity appears to be low in tropical fresh waters. Permanent freshwater lakes are perhaps less important loci for the evolution of the freshwater biota than generally thought, temporary fresh waters more so. Finally, the River Continuum does not seem to be applicable to many running waters outside the north temperate region. 5. A number of suggestions are made of how a better balance in limnology may be arrived at: how a more globally comprehensive intellectual framework may be built. Suggestions include: an increased awareness of the frequently different natures of waters within and beyond the northern temperate region; recognition of the potential benefits to be gained from the study of waters outside the northern temperate region;  相似文献
