The scaly part of the posttemporal bone and the lateral-line scales have the same structure as other scales. However, the lateral line with its bony canal induces some local transformations in both structures. The posttemporal bone can be interpreted as a lateral-line scale whose "dermo"-component is extensively developed. With its composite structure, both osseous and scaly, the posttemporal bone affords an instance peculiarly well suited for studying the relationships between isopedine and bone. The observations demonstrate that isopedine whose superposed collagen layers make a double-twisted plywood, is a specialized structure which evolved from a bony tissue. The fibrous basal plate of a Latimeria scale is homologous to the osseous basal plate of a cosmoid scale.  相似文献

Four adult male Asian Houbara Bustards Chlamydotis macqueenii were caught on their breeding grounds in the Gobi Desert of China and tracked by satellite from July 2000 for from 5 months to > 3.5 years. Wintering areas were identified for two individuals, one on the Turkmenistan/Uzbekistan border in the Amur-Darya valley, the second at the Iran/Turkmenistan border. One individual used the same wintering and breeding areas for three consecutive years. Overall departure dates from breeding grounds ranged from 29 September to 14 October, with arrival on wintering quarters from 23 October to 7 November. Birds left their wintering grounds between 2 and 21 March and reached their breeding areas between 11 and 21 April. The mean overall migration distance was 3935 km (sd = ± 229, n  = 9). Houbara Bustards mainly followed steppe areas to migrate avoiding the highest elevations of the Himalayan massif and travelling 267 km/day on average. Pre-breeding migration lasted longer than post-breeding and included more and longer stopovers. The Taukum Desert and Jungar Basin are critical areas for migration of eastern Houbara populations. Breeding range, used for 5.5 months, was 274 km2 (sd = ± 53, n  = 4), whereas wintering range, used for around 4 months a year, was 76 km2 (sd = ± 22, n  = 3). Range use pattern appeared similar for Asian Houbara released in central Saudi Arabia, but differed from the African Houbara Bustard. More investigations are required to determine the effects of food availability and meteorological conditions on the migration pattern and on the use of stopovers by Asian Houbara Bustards.  相似文献

Dispersal ability is a key determinant of the propensity of an organism to cope with habitat fragmentation and climate change. Here we quantify queen dispersal in two common bumblebee species in an arable landscape. Dispersal was measured by taking DNA samples from workers in the spring and summer, and from queens in the following spring, at 14 sites across a landscape. The queens captured in the spring must be full sisters of workers that were foraging in the previous year. A range of sibship reconstruction methods were compared using simulated data sets including or no genotyping errors. The program Colony gave the most accurate reconstruction and was used for our analysis of queen dispersal. Comparison of queen dispersion with worker foraging distances was used to take into account an expected low level of false identification of sister pairs which might otherwise lead to overestimates of dispersal. Our data show that Bombus pascuorum and B. lapidarius queens can disperse by at least 3 and 5 km, respectively. These estimates are consistent with inferences drawn from studies of population structuring in common and rare bumblebee species, and suggest that regular gene flow over several kilometres due to queen dispersal are likely to be sufficient to maintain genetic cohesion of ubiquitous species over large spatial scales whereas rare bumblebee species appear unable to regularly disperse over distances greater than 10 km. Our results have clear implications for conservation strategies for this important pollinator group, particularly when attempting to conserve fragmented populations.  相似文献

1. In Lake Geneva (Switzerland), total phosphorus concentrations have decreased from 90 mg m?3 in 1979 to 55 mg m?3 in 1990. 2. To assess the effects of this improvement, tubificid and lumbriculid communities were sampled in 1982 and in 1991 in the same areas, at a depth of 40 m. 3. Abundance of mesotrophic species (mostly Potamothrix vejdovskyi) and of eutrophic species (mostly Potamothrix hammoniensis) was lower in 1991 than in 1982; in contrast, oligotrophic species (mostly Peloscolex velutinus) were more abundant in 1991 than in 1982. 4. The changes recorded in 1991 were the same as those associated with a decrease of organic sedimentation. 5. Mean relative abundance of oligotrophic species increased from 17% in 1982 to 41% in 1991. According to these values, Lake Geneva was mesoeutrophic in 1982, but mesotrophic in 1991.  相似文献

In a population of the monogynous, polyandrous ant Cataglyphis cursor , we analysed the spatial genetic structure of queens, colony fathers and workers at a microgeographical scale to infer the extent of sex-biased dispersal and to assess the impact of limited dispersal on the patterns of relatedness within the colony. To this end, four microsatellite markers were scored for the queen and an average of 26 workers from each of 35 mapped colonies. We used pair-wise kinship coefficients between all pairs of genotypes, including the reconstructed colony father genotypes (1) to test and quantify isolation by distance patterns within each sex or caste through the analysis of kinship–distance curves, and (2) to compute the average relatedness between categories of colony members. The kinship–distance curve was much steeper for colony queens than colony fathers, indicating male-biased dispersal. However, colony fathers also displayed a non-random spatial genetic structure, so that even males show some dispersal limitation at the scale of the population, which extends over less than 250 m. The degree of relatedness between the different sexes and castes of colonies was well predicted from the number of mates per queen and the inbreeding of queens, and the impact of limited dispersal was very weak at this scale of observation. We discuss the interest of kinship–distance curves to assess sex-biased dispersal on a local scale and we compare our results with large-scale analyses of genetic structure in Cataglyphis cursor and other monogynous ant species.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 465–473.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The coelomic gregarine Diplauxis hatti exhibits a unique adaptation of its life cycle to its polychaete host Perinereis cultrifera. Experimental and ultrastructural observations on natural populations from the English Channel showed that release of parasite spores is concomitant with the polychaete spawning. As the development of P. cultrifera is direct, the notochete larva ingest parts of the jelly coat covered with numerous sporocysts of D. hatti during hatching. Transepithelial migration of the sporozoites takes place in the gut of three‐ or four‐segment notochete larvae and syzygies of about 20 μm are observed in the coelom. Growth of these young syzygies is slow: after 18–24 mo they reach only 60–70 μm. They exhibit active pendular movements. In the English Channel, female and male gametogenesis of P. cultrifera begins at 19 mo and 2 yr, respectively; the somatic transformations (epitoky) in the last 4 mo of their 3‐year life. During epitoky, the syzygies undergo an impressive growth and reach 700–800 μm within a few weeks. A shift from pendular to active peristaltic motility is observed when the syzygies reach 200–250 μm. When gamogony occurs, syncytial nuclear divisions are initiated and cellularization produces hundred to thousands of male and female gametes of similar size. The male gametes exhibit a flagellum with 3+0 axoneme. The mixing of the gametes (“danse des gametes”) and fertilization are observed during 4–5 h. Zygotes differentiate sporoblasts with eight sporozoites. The sporozoites exhibit the canonical structure of Apicomplexa, a polarized cell with micronemes and rhoptries.  相似文献

To determine the origins of laboratory mice, the restriction patterns of mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) from various strains were compared with those of relevant subspecies and/or races of mus musculus . In most strains and substrains of laboratory mice examined (50/55), the cleavage patterns were identical to those of the European subspecies M. m. domesticus . Those that varied include two sublines of NZB, the strain NZC, and the Japanese strain RR. The NZB and NZC patterns were identical to that of the European subspecies M. m. brevirostris , which itself has restriction patterns similar to M. m. domesticus . On the other hand, the RR pattern was identical to M. m. molossinus -like mice trapped in Western China and slightly different from Japanese M. m. molossinus . These findings suggest that the strains NZB and NZC stemmed from a European founder stock which differed from the ancestral stocks of other laboratory strains and that the ancestral mice of the RR strain had been transported from China to Japan. Therefore, most laboratory strains of mice are derived from the European subspecies M. m. domesticus while M. m. brevirostris and M. m. molossinus have made minor contributions. M. m. musculus does not appear to have made any contribution.  相似文献

The Monogenea, which is divided into two clades, namely the Monopisthocotylea and Polyopisthocotylea, is a highly diversified group of platyhelminth parasites that infest mainly actinopterygian and chondrichthyan fishes but also, to a lesser extent, freshwater sarcopterygian hosts. Euzetrema knoepffleri Combes, 1965 (Monogenea: Iagotrematidae), which is specific to the salamander Euproctus montanus Savi, 1838 is among the rare monopisthocotylean parasites infesting tetrapod hosts. We sequenced the complete 18S rRNA gene of this parasite to infer its phylogenetic position within the Monopisthocotylea. Our results provide a new insight for coevolutionary scenarios between monopisthocotyleans and gnathostomatan hosts. Indeed, the basal position of E. knoepffleri within a subgroup of the Monopisthocotylea which comprises two clusters that both include parasites of the Actinopterygii and Chondrichthyes, suggests a very old association between the Iagotrematidae and tetrapods. Furthermore, if we take into account a recent view of Gnathostomata evolution where bony and cartilaginous fishes are regarded as a monophyletic group, it could be argued that the Iagotrematidae arose very early, during the fish–tetrapod transition, as did the Polystomatidae, the only monogenean family of the Polyopisthocotylea that infests sarcopterygian hosts.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 727–734.  相似文献

Abstract: Eight skulls of beaked whales (Cetacea, Odontoceti, Ziphiidae), in six cases associated with elements of the mandible, were collected from a limited area (about 1.5 km2) and roughly from the same stratigraphic horizon at Cerro Colorado, 35 km south‐south‐west of the city of Ica (Peru), where the late Middle Miocene basal strata of the Pisco Formation crop out. They represent the highest concentration reported of fossil Ziphiidae. These finely preserved Cerro Colorado fossils are described and assigned to a new species Messapicetus gregarius, together with another specimen collected from sediments of the same age at Cerro la Bruja (33 km south‐east to Cerro Colorado). Messapicetus gregarius shares with M. longirostris Bianucci, Landini and Varola, 1992 (Tortonian of Italy), an extremely elongated rostrum, but is clearly different from the Italian species in the more distinct maxillary tubercle and prominential notch, the more robust premaxillary crest, and the abrupt ventrolateral descent of the medial margin of the maxilla from the vertex. A parsimony analysis reveals that Messapicetus belongs to a basal clade, which includes other ziphiids with a dorsally closed mesorostral groove and prenarial basin. The high concentration of specimens belonging to the same species (some of them tentatively identified as adult males and females), combined with the presence of a calf, supports the hypothesis of site fidelity; these cetaceans might have lived in a limited region for a long period for both breeding and feeding. Besides the eight specimens of M. gregarius, strata at Cerro Colorado include many other cetacean remains (with several specimens of the pontoporiid Brachydelphis including a foetus), pinnipeds, turtles, fishes, and birds.  相似文献
