The cranial osteology of the small theropod dinosaur Proceratosaurus from the Bathonian of Minchinhampton, England, is described in detail, based on new preparation and computed tomography (CT) scan images of the type, and only known, specimen. Proceratosaurus is an unusual theropod with markedly enlarged external nares and a cranial crest starting at the premaxillary–nasal junction. The skull is highly pneumatic, with pneumatized nasals, jugals, and maxillae, as well as a highly pneumatic braincase, featuring basisphenoid, anterior tympanic, basipterygoid, and carotid recesses. The dentition is unusual, with small premaxillary teeth and much larger lateral teeth, with a pronounced size difference of the serrations between the mesial and distal carina. The first dentary tooth is somewhat procumbent and flexed anteriorly. Phylogenetic analysis places Proceratosaurus in the Tyrannosauroidea, in a monophyletic clade Proceratosauridae, together with the Oxfordian Chinese taxon Guanlong. The Bathonian age of Proceratosaurus extends the origin of all clades of basal coelurosaurs back into the Middle Jurassic, and provides evidence for an early, Laurasia‐wide, dispersal of the Tyrannosauroidea during the late Middle to Late Jurassic. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009.  相似文献

Many species appear to be undergoing shifts in phenology, arising from climate change. To predict the direction and magnitude of future changes requires an understanding of how phenology depends on climatic variation. Species show large‐scale spatial variation in phenology (affected by differentiation among populations) as well as variation in phenology from year‐to‐year at the same site (affected predominantly by local plasticity). Teasing apart spatial and temporal variation in phenology should allow improved predictions of phenology under climate change. This study is the first to quantify large‐scale spatial and temporal variation in the entire emergence pattern of species, and to test the relationships found by predicting future data. We use data from up to 33 years of permanent transect records of butterflies in the United Kingdom to fit and test models for 15 butterfly species. We use generalized additive models to model spatial and temporal variation in the distribution of adult butterflies over the season, allowing us to capture changes in the timing of emergence peaks, relative sizes of peaks and/or number of peaks in a single analysis. We develop these models using data for 1973–2000, and then use them to predict phenologies from 2001 to 2006. For six of our study species, a model with only spatial variation in phenology is the best predictor of the future, implying that these species have limited plasticity. For the remaining nine species, the best predictions come from a model with both spatial and temporal variation in phenology; for four of these, growing degree‐days have similar effects over space and time, implying high levels of plasticity. The results show that statistical phenology models can be used to predict phenology shifts in a second time period, suggesting that it should be feasible to project phenologies under climate change scenarios, at least over modest time scales.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Nosema bombi is a microsporidian parasite of bumblebees that is of potentially great ecological and economic importance. Nosema bombi has been shown to have detrimental fitness effects on the bumblebee Bombus terrestris under laboratory conditions. The present study investigates whether N. bombi also has negative fitness effects under natural conditions. 2. A field experiment was conducted with B. terrestris spring queens caught from the wild. In the laboratory these queens were assigned to either infected or control treatment groups. On the emergence of workers, colonies were placed in the field and a number of fitness and life‐history traits were measured. 3. The size of colonies produced by infected queens was significantly smaller than those of control queens. None of the 14 infected colonies produced sexual offspring, whereas four of the 14 control colonies reached the male production stage. Results of the field experiment are in agreement with prior laboratory‐based results, and even imply that such effects are amplified under natural conditions. 4. The evidence suggests that, on entering the colony early, N. bombi has a highly detrimental effect on the fitness of its host. It would seem that this parasite reduces its opportunities to transmit into the next host generation.  相似文献

Cyanogenesis, the release of toxic cyanide from living cells, plays an important role in the defence system of certain plant (e.g. Fabaceae) and animal (e.g. Zygaenidae) taxa. The larvae of a significant number of Zygaena moth species (Zygaenidae) preferentially feed on cyanogenic Fabaceae and some of them are able to sequester cyanogenic compounds of their host plants. Using secondary structure variation of the small-subunit rRNA, we tested the currently accepted evolutionary hypothesis explaining species diversification in the genus Zygaena . We derived secondary structures considering evidence from covariation patterns and thermodynamic folding and applied structural information in a phylogenetic analysis. Contrary to previous assumptions, our results suggest that the use of cyanogenic larval host plants is an ancient trait and that the ability to feed on cyanogenic plants was probably already present in the most recent common ancestor of Zygaena . Low temperatures during rice (Oryza sativa L.) pollen development cause pollen sterility and decreased grain yield. We show that the time of highest sensitivity to cold coincides with the time of peak tapetal activity: the transition of the tetrad to early uni-nucleate stage (young microspore, YM stage). Low temperatures at this stage of pollen development result in an accumulation of sucrose in the anthers, accompanied by decreased activity of cell wall bound acid invertase and depletion of starch in mature pollen grains. Expression analysis of two cell wall (OSINV1, 4) and one vacuolar (OSINV2) acid invertase genes showed that OSINV4 is anther-specific and down-regulated by cold treatment. OSINV4 is transiently expressed in the tapetum cell layer at the YM stage, and later from the early binucleate stage in the maturing microspores. The down-regulation of OSINV4 expression in the tapetum at YM may cause a disruption in hexose production and starch formation in the pollen grains. In a cold-tolerant cultivar, OSINV4 expression was not reduced by cold; sucrose did not accumulate in the anthers and starch formation in the pollen grains was not affected.  相似文献

A Synthetic Medium for Comparative Nutritional Studies of Lactobacilli   总被引:10,自引:8,他引:2  
The composition of a synthetic medium supporting the growth of lactobacilli is given (Table 1). The medium, containing glucose, amino acids, vitamins, mineral salts, purines and pyrimidines, allows the study of nutritional requirements of different strains of lactobacilli under identical environmental conditions. It was found that all the strains tested needed L-glutamic acid, L-valine and L-leucine, and a group of them also required L-arginine, L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan. Some strains required vitamins, e.g. L. bulgaricus (pantothenic acid), L. fermenti (pantothenic acid and niacin). These results are compared with those found by others employing different media.  相似文献

In vitro melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) stimulates melanogenesis in some, but not all, melanocytes and melanoma cells. In an attempt to explain this variation in response to αMSH, we examined cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) accumulation, tyrosinase activity, and melanin production in primary (1°) murine B16 melanoma cells and in two B16 cell lines (B16 F1 and B16 F10) that are known to respond to αMSH. In vivo all three B16 melanoma cell types produced pigmented tumours. In vitro αMSH increased tyrosinase activity and melanin content in the F1 and F10 cells but not in the B16 1° cells. αMSH, however, increased cAMP production in all three cell types, confirming that the inability of B16 1° cells to produce melanin in response to αMSH is not due to a lack of αMSH receptors or cAMP response to αMSH. Further, we present evidence for a separate pathway of melanogenesis that is independent of cAMP as calmodulin antagonists, which do not elevate cAMP, increased tyrosinase activity, and melanin production in both 1° and F1 cells.  相似文献
