Abstract.  1. Host plant finding in walking herbivorous beetles is still poorly understood. Analysis of small-scale movement patterns under semi-natural conditions can be a useful tool to detect behavioural responses towards host plant cues.
2. In this study, the small-scale movement behaviour of the monophagous leaf beetle Cassida canaliculata Laich. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) was studied in a semi-natural arena ( r = 1 m). In three different settings, a host ( Salvia pratensis L., Lamiales: Lamiaceae), a non-host ( Rumex conglomeratus Murr., Caryophyllales: Polygonaceae), or no plant was presented in the centre of the arena.
3. The beetles showed no differences in the absolute movement variables, straightness and mean walking speed, between the three settings. However, the relative movement variables, mean distance to the centre and mean angular deviation from walking straight to the centre, were significantly smaller when a host plant was offered. Likewise, the angular deviation from walking straight to the centre tended to decline with decreasing distance from the centre. Finally, significantly more beetles were found on the host than on the non-host at the end of all the trials.
4. It is concluded that C. canaliculata is able to recognise its host plant from a distance. Whether olfactory or visual cues (or a combination of both) are used to find the host plant remains to be elucidated by further studies.  相似文献

Background

Although both smoking and respiratory complaints are very common, tools to improve diagnostic accuracy are scarce in primary care. This study aimed to reveal what inflammatory patterns prevail in clinically established diagnosis groups, and what factors are associated with eosinophilia.

Method

Induced sputum and blood plasma of 59 primary care patients with COPD (n = 17), asthma (n = 11), chronic bronchitis (CB, n = 14) and smokers with no respiratory complaints ('healthy smokers', n = 17) were collected, as well as lung function, smoking history and clinical work-up. Patterns of inflammatory markers per clinical diagnosis and factors associated with eosinophilia were analyzed by multiple regression analyses, the differences expressed in odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals.

Results

Multivariately, COPD was significantly associated with raised plasma-LBP (OR 1.2 [1.04–1.37]) and sTNF-R55 in sputum (OR 1.01 [1.001–1.01]), while HS expressed significantly lowered plasma-LBP (OR 0.8 [0.72–0.95]). Asthma was characterized by higher sputum eosinophilic counts (OR 1.3 [1.05–1.54]), while CB showed a significantly higher proportion of sputum lymphocytic counts (OR 1.5 [1.12–1.9]). Sputum eosinophilia was significantly associated with reversibility after adjusting for smoking, lung function, age, gender and allergy.

Conclusion

Patterns of inflammatory markers in a panel of blood plasma and sputum cells and mediators were discernable in clinical diagnosis groups of respiratory disease. COPD and so-called healthy smokers showed consistent opposite associations with plasma LBP, while chronic bronchitics showed relatively predominant lymphocytic inflammation compared to other diagnosis groups. Only sputum eosinophilia remained significantly associated with reversibility across the spectrum of respiratory disease in smokers with airway complaints.  相似文献

From Biodiversity to Biotechnology: Water bears and the art of survival Many small organisms are frequently exposed to microclimate changes, which directly affect their survival. Such changes, for example dehydration and rehydration or freezing and thawing, can occur several times during a day or at intervals of weeks or months. As a tun, water bears are able to survive long periods of time, however, with increasing time in the anhydrobiotic state DNA damage increases. Therefore, we assume that unlimited survival is not possible, due to cellular damage. Currently the basic mechanisms of this phenomenon are to a large extent unknown. Water bears are an interesting field of research in biotechnology, as many applications for long‐term preservation of biological material can be envisaged.  相似文献

During the past century, the upland breeding areas of Hen Harriers in Ireland have been extensively afforested. There is no evidence that this species avoids breeding in heavily forested landscapes and, indeed, young commercial forests in their second rotation are often selected as nest‐sites. However, Hen Harriers have coexisted with these forested areas for only a few decades and it is possible that such landscapes are suboptimal. We examined the relationship between breeding success and habitat using a dataset spanning three years and four study areas in the south and west of Ireland. We assessed whether nest success and fledged brood size were related to habitat type, both at the nest‐site and in the surrounding landscape. Neither measure of breeding productivity was related to total forest cover or to percentage cover of closed canopy forest in the landscape. However, in a subset of areas, high cover of second‐rotation pre‐thicket (young forests planted on land from which a first rotation has already been harvested) in the surrounding landscape was associated with low levels of breeding success. This may be due to factors related to predation, disturbance or prey availability. The fact that second‐rotation pre‐thicket is a preferred habitat for nesting in Ireland suggests that Hen Harriers may be making suboptimal decisions in the landscapes available to them.  相似文献

Data mining depends on the ability to access machine-readable metadata that describe genotypes, environmental conditions, and sampling times and strategy. This article presents Xeml Lab. The Xeml Interactive Designer provides an interactive graphical interface at which complex experiments can be designed, and concomitantly generates machine-readable metadata files. It uses a new eXtensible Mark-up Language (XML)-derived dialect termed XEML. Xeml Lab includes a new ontology for environmental conditions, called Xeml Environment Ontology. However, to provide versatility, it is designed to be generic and also accepts other commonly used ontology formats, including OBO and OWL. A review summarizing important environmental conditions that need to be controlled, monitored and captured as metadata is posted in a Wiki ( http://www.codeplex.com/XeO ) to promote community discussion. The usefulness of Xeml Lab is illustrated by two meta-analyses of a large set of experiments that were performed with Arabidopsis thaliana during 5 years. The first reveals sources of noise that affect measurements of metabolite levels and enzyme activities. The second shows that Arabidopsis maintains remarkably stable levels of sugars and amino acids across a wide range of photoperiod treatments, and that adjustment of starch turnover and the leaf protein content contribute to this metabolic homeostasis.  相似文献

Abstract: The continental deposits of the Cuyana Basin, western Argentina, have yielded the most diverse, but so far almost unstudied, Triassic ichthyofaunas of South America. Here, we review these faunas and show that only eight of the 29 named taxa can be considered valid, including the chondrostean Neochallaia, the acrolepid Challaia, Guaymayenia, a taxon of uncertain affinities, and five species of the perleidiform family Pseudobeaconiidae. The first three taxa most probably come from Middle Triassic sediments, while the pseudobeaconiids are of Late Triassic age. Other material, although not diagnostic, probably represents other species, and thus, the diversity of actinopterygians in the Cuyana basin is certainly higher than currently recognized. For the Late Triassic fish fauna, the absence of crown‐group neopterygians and a single record of a sarcopterygian is noteworthy and probably indicates some degree of endemism in this fauna, also supported by the high abundance of pseudobeaconiids, which are unknown from other areas. Furthermore, on the basis of the age indicated by the fishes and the available geological information, we discuss the age of the local fauna of the Cerro Bayo, close to the city of Mendoza, and the Agua de la Zorra Formation, Uspallata.  相似文献

1. The sub-lethal effects of hydrologic disturbances on stream invertebrates are poorly understood, but integral to some models of how disturbances influence population and community dynamics. Carnivorous larvae of a net-spinning caddisfly, Plectrocnemia conspersa , have a strong predatory impact in some streams. Their silken nets, however, are vulnerable to high flow disturbance and the consequent destruction of nets could reduce predatory impacts and have life history consequences.
2. In a laboratory experiment, we manipulated the frequency of disturbances that destroyed the nets of P. conspersa , in the presence and absence of potential prey. Animals were housed individually and each trial lasted 8 days. We estimated net size, cumulative mass of silk produced, net allocation (net mass expressed as a proportion of body mass), per capita prey consumption and growth or mass loss of larvae.
3. In the absence of prey, increased disturbance frequency was accompanied by increased loss of body mass, a reduction of net size and an increase in the cumulative mass of silk produced. At the highest disturbance frequency, larvae eventually gave up producing nets. The ratio of net mass to body mass decreased with increasing disturbance, suggesting a trade-off in the allocation of resources, with a decreasing proportion of resources available for foraging. In the presence of prey, increased disturbance frequency was accompanied by a reduction in per capita prey consumption. Although foraging success offset the costs of silk production, growth rate decreased with increasing disturbance and could eventually lead to reduced body size and fecundity of adults.
4. These sub-lethal effects suggest that hydrologic disturbances could impose metabolic costs and reduce foraging efficiency of this predator. Thus, disturbances may reduce predator impact on prey populations and reduce predator population size without any direct mortality or loss of individuals.  相似文献

Sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region 1 (ITS1) of the ribosomal DNA were used to determine the phylogenetic relationships of species of Trichoderma sect. Pachybasium. To this end, 85 strains-including all the available ex-type strains-were analyzed. Parsimony analysis demonstrated that the section is nonmonophyletic, distributing the 85 strains among three main groups that were supported by bootstrap values. Group A comprises two clades (A1 and A2), with A1 including T. polysporum, T. piluliferum, and T. minutisporum, while A2 included T. hamatum, T. pubescens, and T. strigosum in addition to species previously included in sect. Trichoderma (i.e., T. viride, T. atroviride, and T. koningii). The ex-type strain of T. fasciculatum formed a separate branch basal to clade A. Clade B contained the sect. Pachybasium members T. harzianum, T. fertile, T. croceum, T. longipile, T. strictipile, T. tomentosum, T. oblongisporum, T. flavofuscum, T. spirale, and the anamorphs of Hypocrea semiorbis and H. cf. gelatinosa. Sequence differences among clades A1, A2, and B were in the same order of magnitude as between each of them and T. longibrachiatum, which was used as an outgroup in these analyses. Sequence differences within clades A1, A2, and B were considerably smaller: in some cases (i.e., T. virens and T. flavofuscum; T. strictipile and H. cf. gelatinosa), the ITS1-sequences were identical, suggesting conspecifity. In other cases (e.g., T. crassum and T. longipile; T. harzianum, T. inhamatum, T. croceum, T. fertile, and H. semiorbis; T. hamatum and T. pubescens; and T. viride, T. atroviride, and T. koningii) differences were in the range of 1-3 nt only, suggesting a very close phylogenetic relationship. The sequence of a previously described aggressive mushroom competitor group of T. harzianum strains (Th2) was strikingly different from that of the ex-type strain of T. harzianum and closely related species and is likely to be a separate species.   • 1 The accrual of organic matter, chlorophyll a and bacteria, and the activities of various extracellular enzymes were studied during biofilm formation on River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) wood submerged in two temperate Australian billabongs for 24 weeks over summer and winter of 1989–90.
  • 2 Peak organic matter content of the biofilm ranged from 0.7 to 3.3mg AFDW cm?2, chlorophyll a content from 1.3 to 4. 2μg cm?2 and bacterial abundance from 18 × 106 to 94 × 106 cells cm?2. Most variation in organic matter content, chlorophyll a content and bacterial abundance in the biofilms couid be attributed to the duration of immersion (28–48% of variation) and to the interaction between site and submergence period (11–12%). Differences between sites and between seasons were less important in explaining total variation.
  • 3 Alkaline phosphatase, aminopeptidase and [3-D-glucosidase activities, determined per unit substratum surface area, were up to 138 ± 26 nmol cm?2h?1, 113 ± 1 nmol cm?2h?1 and 9.3 ± 2.2 nmol cm?2h?1, respectively. Activities of these three enzymes determined per unit organic biomass were up to 203 ± 25, 157 ± 13, and 16 ± 2.1 nmol mg1 AFDW h?1 respectively. Enzyme activities expressed on an area- or biomass-specific basis responded differently to the effects of season, site and duration of substratum exposure.
  • 4 Few consistent relationships could be established between the activity of a given enzyme system and the activity of other enzymes, nor with the various biomass parameters, such as total organic matter content, chlorophyll a content or bacterial abundance.
  • 5 We suggest that submerged wood of the River Red Gum is an important site for biofilm development in lentic systems in south-eastern Australia, and thus as a food resource for grazing invertebrates and for transformations of various nutrients and organic matter.
