Method of isolating conditionally-pathogenic Gram-negative microorganisms, agents of intrahospital infections, from air

The possibility of detecting Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative bacteria in the air of the burn department at the Institute of Surgery was studied. The investigation of large volumes of air (0.5-1 m3) in the wards and the corridor with the use of a new bacteriological aerosol sampler, model IIAB-5, resulted in the detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Besides, in a number of other rooms Klebsiella, Proteus, Citrobacter and Enterobacter were detected in the air. The possibility of the spread of Gram-negative opportunistic bacteria through the air in hospital conditions is discussed.     

Contractile properties of reinnervated skeletal muscle and their relation to the degree of nerve damage

Experiments with 22 rats have shown that the anterior tibial muscle in the stage of incomplete reinnervation is marked by decreased force and retardation of the semi-relaxation of an isometric contraction. In completely reinnervated muscles, the changes in the contractility are determined by the degree of nerve damage. The group of animals with the sciatic nerve injury demonstrated the contractility characteristic of a slower muscle, in contrast to the group with the fibular nerve damage.     

Effect of interlok, remantadine and biotop on normal monocyte functional activity and in acute viral hepatitis

The influence of interlok, biotop and remantadine on the functional activity of monocytes was determined with the use of the NBT test permitting the quantitative evaluation of this characteristic. In this study interlok was found to give promising results in the treatment of acute viral hepatitis, due both to its antiviral action and to the stimulation of the functional activity of monocytes. biotop proved to render a sharply pronounced stimulating effect on the functional activity of monocytes, thus enhancing antiviral resistance. Remantadine suppressed the functional activity of monocytes and increased their lesion by the virus, thus creating favorable conditions for virus persistence in monocytes.     

Monoclonal antibodies to antigens found on the neutrophils, activated T-lymphocytes and blast cells in human acute leukemia

Two hybridomas secreting mouse cytotoxic monoclonal antibodies to in vivo and in vitro activated human T-lymphocyte and neutrophil surface membrane antigenic determinants have been produced. One of these monoclonal antibodies (Ta/H-2) appeared to be also specifically reactive to blast cells in the majority of non-T-non-B and T acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients.     

Determination of stereochemistry in the fatty acid hydroperoxide products of lipoxygenase catalysis

High-performance liquid chromatography has been found to be an effective method for the determination of absolute configuration in the products of the lipoxygenase-catalyzed oxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Methyl esters of fatty acid hydroperoxides that had been reduced to the corresponding alcohols were converted into (+)-alpha-methoxy-alpha-trifluoromethylphenylacetic acid esters. Enantiomeric alcohols were converted into diastereomeric esters that were readily resolved by normal-phase HPLC. The instrumental requirements for the technique are an isocratic HPLC and a uv absorbance monitor. The method was found to be effective in the determination of stereochemistry in the products derived from the action of plant lipoxygenases on linoleic acid. In addition, the chromatography of the derivatives obtained from lipoxygenase catalysis on arachidonic acid was found to be effective for the assignment of stereochemistry in those products. A comparison of the chromatography of these derivatives with that for the corresponding menthyloxycarbonyl derivatives demonstrated the superiority of this approach for the resolution of the diastereomeric pairs. The technique was applied to the determination of stereochemistry in the products derived from soybean lipoxygenase isoenzymes under a variety of experimental conditions.
