Based on study of isolated neurons of molluscs Lymnaea stagnalis, elementary mechanisms of motility of living neurons have been analyzed. With aid of these studies, an attempt is made at explaining mechanisms of the cellular morphogenetic processes of evolution of simple nervous systems: exit of neuroepithelial cells from the layer of external epithelium, transformation of sensory bipolar cells into the associative ones, migration of neurons, formation of diffuse plexus and its conversion into the plexus-ganglion system, regularities of formation of ganglia and synganglia. The amino acid sequence of a 103 residue segment encompassing the substrate-binding active site lysyl residue of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase from Drosophila melanogaster is determined. The sequence is identical to more than 70% with the structure of rabbit muscle aldolase and with the known partial sequences of the sturgeon muscle, trout muscle, and ox liver enzymes. The homology of the insect enzyme with the vertebrate aldolases strongly implies a similar tertiary structure folding. 相似文献

PET (pre-eclamptic toxaemia), characterized by pregnancy-related hypertension and proteinuria, due to widespread endothelial dysfunction, is a primary cause of maternal morbidity. Altered circulating factors, particularly the VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) family of proteins and their receptors, are thought to be key contributors to this disease. Plasma from patients with PET induces numerous cellular and physiological changes in endothelial cells, indicating the presence of a circulating imbalance of the normal plasma constituents. These have been narrowed down to macromolecules of the VEGF family of proteins and receptors. It has been shown that responses of endothelial cells in intact vessels to plasma from patients with pre-eclampsia is VEGF-dependent. It has recently been shown that this may be specific to the VEGF???b isoform, and blocked by addition of recombinant human PlGF (placental growth factor). Taken together with results that show that sVEGFR1 (soluble VEGF receptor 1) levels are insufficient to bind VEGF-A in human plasma from patients with pre-eclampsia, and that other circulating macromolecules bind, but do not inactivate, VEGF-A, this suggests that novel hypotheses involving altered bioavailability of VEGF isoforms resulting from reduced or bound PlGF, or increased sVEGFR1 increasing biological activity of circulating plasma, could be tested. This suggests that knowing how to alter the balance of VEGF family members could prevent endothelial activation, and potentially some symptoms, of pre-eclampsia. 相似文献

Characteristics of seven Atlantic-Mediterranean fish species are provided. Of them, four (gobies—yellow-headed Gobius xanthocephalus and red-mouthed G. cruentatus, incognito blenny Parablennius incognitus, and greater pipefish Syngnathus acus) were either first found in the Black Sea coastal zone of the Crimea, or their findings were doubted, and three species (thin-lipped grey mullet Liza ramada, European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena, and Black Sea salmon Salmo trutta labrax) are very rare. Over the last decade, the authors recorded 15 fish species; of them, seven Atlantic-Mediterranean species have dispersed along the Crimean coasts by now, one endemic of the far eastern seas (chameleon goby Tridentiger trigonocephalus) has naturalized in Sevastopol Bay, four invading species, freshwater by origin, permanently occur in the estuary zones of the peninsula; the remaining three species are known from single findings and apparently belong to the category of accidental fish. An increase in the species composition of ichthyofauna off the Black Sea coasts of the Crimea results from the on-going process of mediterranization—the invasion in the estuary of freshwater tolerant species at the expense of accidental species that penetrated here either independently or with ballast waters. 相似文献

In seeds of Trifolium repens, T. pratense, and Lupinus arboreus,the hilum is a hygroscopically activated valve in the impermeableepidermis of the testa. When relative humidity was low the fissurein the hilum opened permitting the seed to dry out; when therelative humidity was high the fissure closed obstructing theabsorption of moisture. During seed-ripening the moisture contentfell readily to approximately 25 per cent., and thereafter moreslowly until the epidermis became impermeable at approximately14 per cent, moisture content. Further drying of the seed tookplace only by diffusion of water vapour through the hilum. Hardseeds tended to have a moisture content in equilibrium withthe lowest relative humidity to which they had been exposed.They absorbed moisture under conditions of gradually increasingrelative humidity such that the hilar fissure remained open.The duration of the impermeable condition increased with thedegree of desiccation brought about by loss of water throughthe hilum. 相似文献

The in vivo and in vitro metabolism of 3H-testosterone by rat epididymis and the changes in epididymal weight have been studied after castration and treatment with anti-androgens. The utilization of 3H-testosterone was greatly reduced after castration as was the formation of 5alpha-reduced 17 beta-hydroxy metabolites. The formation of the 17 -keto metabolites was unaffected. Castration had no effect on the ratio between water and ether soluble radioactivity. Administration of testosterone propionate, necessary for giving normal stimulated prostate weight (150 mug/day), restored the metabolism of testosterone to approximately normal values. Estradiol benzoate and progesterone inhibited metabolism of testosterone in vitro and greatly reduced the formation of DHT (17 beta-hydroxy-5alpha-androstan-3-one) and 3 alpha-diol(5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha-17 beta-diol) by experiments both in vivo and in vitro. No effect of cyproterone acetate could be demonstrated on either the in vitro or in vivo metabolism of testosterone. Castration for 14 days reduced the epididymal weight to about 30% of that found in intact animals. Administration of testosterone propionate restored the epididymal weight to about 80% of normal. Estradiol benzoate and cyproterone acetate given to intact rats led to a decrease in the epididymal weight. Progesterone had no such effect. In 14 days castrated rats receiving testosterone propionate all three anti-androgens reduced the weight of the epididymis. In conclusion, our results show that the metabolic conversion of testosterone in epididymis to DHT and 3 alpha-diol is dramatically dependent on the hormonal status of the animal; castration or treatment with anti-androgens causes a reduced formation of the "active" androgens whilst testosterone replacement treatment restores the metabolism of testosterone to normal. 相似文献

The present study elucidates the possibilities to diagnose and classify urothelial tumors of the upper urinary tract by means of exfoliative cytology on voided urine using a membrane filter method. In a series of 30 patients with renal pelvic tumors and 13 patients with ureteral tumors an overall agreement between cytology and histopathology was obtained in 25 cases (58%). None of the Grade 1 tumors or of the non-invasive Grade 2 tumors were regarded as positive by cytology whilst two out of five invasive Grade 2 tumors had positive cytologic reports. The series included 24 patients with poorly differentiated or anaplastic tumors, 17 of whom had positive cytology (71%). By excluding from the series 13 patients with obstructed urinary passages or radiologically non-functioning kidneys on the tumor side an agreement between cytology and pathology was reached in 83 per cent of the cases, regardless of tumor grade, and in 17 out of 18 patients with Grade 3-4 tumors (94%). 相似文献
