Living with myotonic dystrophy; what can be learned from couples? a qualitative study

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (MD1) is one of the most prevalent neuromuscular diseases, yet very little is known about how MD1 affects the lives of couples and how they themselves manage individually and together. To better match health care to their problems, concerns and needs, it is important to understand their perspective of living with this hereditary, systemic disease.     

Serologic evidence of leptospirosis in woodchucks (Marmota monax) in central New York State.

Serum samples from 153 woodchucks (Marmota monax) from Tompkins County, New York, obtained in 1976 and 1977, were examined by plate agglutination tests for antibodies against five Leptospira antigens. Fourteen sera showed significant titers against either L. hardjo, L. icterohemorrhagiae and/or L. pomona. Reactions against L. hardjo were the most frequent. Woodchucks collected from two dairy farms with histories of bovine leptospirosis did not have a greater prevalence of antibodies than woodchucks collected from other locations. Each of two woodchucks experimentally-inoculated with L. hardjo developed titers to L. hardjo. Maximum titers occurred approximately 30 days post-inoculation. L. hardjo was not observed in urine specimens of these animals.     

Biosurfactants from thermophilic dairy streptococci and their potential role in the fouling control of heat exchanger plates

Recent work on biosurfactant release by thermophilic dairy streptococci is reviewed. There is a suggestion thatStreptococcus thermophilus isolates may release biosurfactants that stimulate detachment of already-adhering cells and leave an anti-adhesive coating on a substratum. A previously published rapid screening method is described for the identification of biosurfactant-releasing microorganisms, and growth medium supplements to enhance biosurfactant release by thermophilic dairy streptococci are reported. New experimental work described includes the isolation and purification of biosurfactants from dairy isolates by thin layer chromatography. Many compounds isolated were extremely surface-active and reduced the water surface tension to values around 30 mJ m^–2 at a concentration of 10 mg ml^–1. Most importantly, the thin layer chromatograms of various isolates resembled each other, and an adsorbed purified compound from one isolate retarded the deposition to glass of another isolate by a factor of two. Provided our findings implicate that these biosurfactants could also be adsorbed to heat exchanger plates in pasteurizers and thereby retard colonization by thermophilic streptococci, these compounds may have major economic implications. Further work is required, however.     

The effect of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis vaccine on reproductive efficiency in cattle vaccinated during estrus

Nineteen nulliparous, sexually mature heifers free of antibody to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus were given two 35 mg intramuscular injections of Lutalyse 10 days apart to synchronize estrus and randomly divided into control and vaccinated groups. On the day of the last Lutalyse injection, modified live IBR virus vaccine was administered intramuscularly to each animal in the vaccinated group and each group was placed with a proven sire for 35 days. After the vaccination, samples were taken for isolation of virus and for determination of serum neutralizing antibody titers. No virus shedding occurred after intramuscular vaccination. However, the conception rate was markedly lower in the vaccinated group than in the control group. These results suggest that the intramuscular inoculation of modified live IBR virus vaccines into cattle during estrus is contraindicated.
