The sensitivity of population trends to the climate and environment is generally considered a species-specific trait. However, evidence that populations may show different responses to the climate and environmental conditions is growing. Whether this differential sensitivity may arise even among neighboring populations remains elusive. We compared the trends of two neighboring populations of the Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni, using data from a 12-year survey of 158 colonies in Sicily, Italy; the two populations inhabiting a lowland and an highland area, respectively. Population trends were modeled through the TRIM algorithms implemented in R (package rtrim). A reversed U-shaped population trend was observed in the lowland, while the highland population showed oscillations around a stable trend. Sahel rainfall 2 years before each annual survey significantly affected population variation in the lowland, while rainfall in March and an index of primary productivity in the breeding areas affected population variation in the highland. This suggests that the population in the lowland may be limited mainly by winter survival in Sahel, because the lowland may be an optimal breeding area for this species. In contrast, the highland population, which occupies a different part of the climatic niche of the species, may be limited mainly by reproductive output, because rainfall in March and the primary productivity in May could represent prey availability immediately before and during the breeding months. Overall, our findings suggest that population-specific environmental sensitivity might occur even over small (<100 km) geographical scales, highlighting the need for population-specific conservation strategies.  相似文献

AVibrio sp., isolated from the skin of a barracuda, swarmed over the surface of an agar medium, forming distinct concentric growth zones. Each zone contained cells of characteristic morphology. The surface hydrophobicity measured by the direction-of-spreading method increased from the periphery to the center of the colony, but cells suspended from each growth zone failed to adhere to hexadecane. The high surface hydrophobicity at the center of the colony was correlated with the presence of a loosely bound amphipathic emulsifying agent.  相似文献

High resolution light microscopic autoradiography was used, together with regional surveys and combined acridine orange staining, to define in rat hippocampus cellular and subcellular sites of concentration and retention of 3H dexamethasone and to compare the topographic pattern of labeling with that of 3H corticosterone. Nuclear uptake of 3H dexamethasone in the hippocampus is demonstrated for the first time in vivo. With 3H dexamethasone, strongest nuclear radioactive labeling was observed in certain glial cells throughout the hippocampus, followed by strong nuclear labeling in most neurons in area CA1 and in the adjacent dorsolateral subiculum and weak nuclear labeling in granule cells of the dentate gyrus. Neurons in areas CA2, CA3, CA4, and in the dorsomedial subiculum and indusium griseum showed little or no nuclear labeling after 3H dexamethasone. With 3H corticosterone, strongest nuclear labeling was observed in neurons in area CA2 and in the dorsomedial subiculum and indusium griseum, followed by area CA1, then CA3 and CA4; the dentate gyrus contained scattered strongly labeled cells among cells with intermediate nuclear labeling. At the subcellular level, evidence for both nuclear and cytoplasmic accumulation of label was found. The results indicate that dexamethasone and corticosterone have both nuclear and cytoplasmic binding sites and that particular patterns of target cell distribution exist, characteristic for each agent. This suggests a differential regulation of cellular functions for the two compounds. Corticosterone nuclear binding appears to be more extensive and encompasses regions with dexamethasone binding. Whether in certain of these common regions corticosterone binds to the same receptor as dexamethasone, which seems possible, or to different receptors, remains to be clarified.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the accumulation and depletion of cadmium in the blood, milk, hair, feces, and urine of Holstein cows during and after treatment. Three Holstein cows received daily oral cadmium administrations (as cadmium chloride) of 0.182 mg/kg body weight/day for 21 days followed by a 63-day withdrawal period. Blood, milk, hair, feces, and urine were collected during treatment and withdrawal periods. Cadmium concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Cadmium concentrations in blood (0.61–1.12 μg/L), milk (0.39–1.04 μg/L), and urine (0.41–2.05 μg/L) were low. Comparatively, cadmium concentrations in feces were higher, especially on treatment day 14 (20.11 mg/kg dry matter). Fecal cadmium concentrations decreased to baseline levels (0.12 mg/kg dry matter) on withdrawal day 21. Hair cadmium concentrations increased with treatment, reaching the highest levels on withdrawal day 7 (24.33 μg/kg). Most of the cadmium was excreted via the feces and very little was present in urine or milk. Cadmium residues were detected in blood and milk more than 63 days after cadmium withdrawal. Hair cadmium concentrations may reflect exposure to the metal.  相似文献
