ACP1GUA-1--a low-activity variant of human erythrocyte acid phosphatase: association with increased glutathione reductase activity.

ACP1GUA-1, a variant of human erythrocyte acid phosphatase, exists as a polymorphism (allele frequency of .132) in the Guaymi Indians of Central America. This variant has an electrophoretic mobility similar to the common B- and C-type variants, but individuals of the ACP1GUA-1 phenotype have a level of enzyme activity only 27% of the activity expected for the ACP1C variant. The GUA-1 variant is more thermostable than is the B variant, and the order of responsiveness to the modulation of activity by purine analogs and folate is always (B)-(A)-(GUA-1). Thus, the GUA-1 variant is a low-activity variant with C-like regulatory properties. Erythrocytes from individuals of the ACP1GUA-1 phenotype have increased basal levels of glutathione reductase, and a larger fraction of the glutathione reductase protein is present as the holoenzyme, indicating increased levels of flavin adenine dinucleotide in the erythrocytes of these individuals. This is consistent with the suggestion that ACP1 has a physiological function as a flavin mononucleotide phosphatase.

本文描述了作者1986年采自湖北省神农架林区的吻额蛛属Aprifrontalia一新种:膨大吻额蛛,新种Aprifrontalia afflata sp.nov.。目前,除本新种外,世界仅报道过1种:Aprifrontalia mascula,本新种雄蛛最显著的特征是:其额向前突呈吻状,触肢胫节前端甚膨大。外雌器形成一斜向下方的突起。模式标本保存于白求恩医科大学生物教研室。     

幼年大鼠诱发排卵条件下卵巢前列腺素(PGs)的含量变化及其生理作用

本实验用幼年大鼠经PMSG/hCG诱发排卵,研究了印巢PGE_2、PGF_(2α) 、6-酮-PGF_(1α) 及TXB_2在排卵过程中的变化。实验表明卵巢PGE_2、PGF_(2α) 及6-酮-PGF_(1α) 在排卵前达到峰值,在排卵后,均趋下降。TXB_2未出现明显变化。受试动物经消炎痛处理后,不仅使排卵受到严重抑制,而对上述三种PGs在排卵前的上升也表现了显著的抑制。提示在卵泡破裂过程中PGs的重要调节作用,PGE_2、PGF_(2α)均可能参与排卵,其中尤以PGE_2的作用最为显著。     

Matrix program to analyze primary structure homology

A FORTRAN program to analyze homology of letter strings (nucleotide or amino acid sequences) and to display the result in the form of a dot matrix is presented. The program is generally usable, user-friendly and has a number of options (filtering, "fudging," i.e., consideration of groups of homologous residues, and screening, i.e., display of only particular groups of residues) which greatly potentiate its analytical power.     

Defective F pili and other characteristics of Flac and Hfr Escherichia coli mutants resistant to bacteriophage R17.

Mutants resistant to the donor-specific bacteriophage R17 were isolated from Hfr and Flac-containing strains of Escherichia coli K-12. Thirty-five mutants were examined for the presence of F pili by electron microscopy. The pilus morphology was studied, as were the abilities of the cells to retract their pili and to synthesize new pili. Measurements were made of the efficiency of the conjugal deoxyribonucleic acid transfer and of M13 and R17 phage infection. All mutants had noticeable defects in pilus production, structure, or function. Mutants were found which produced unusually long pili, displayed wide variations in the number of pili per cell, and were deficient in pilus retraction and synthesis. Evidence is presented that there may be two pathways of pilus retraction.
