A significant number of fetuses with trisomy 13 are spontaneously or voluntarily lost before birth; however, very few such fetuses have been systemically autopsied. In the present study, ten trisomy 13 fetuses of 130-305 mm in crown-rump length, estimated gestational age from 108 days to 239 days, were examined following either karyotype or ultrasonographic diagnosis and voluntary termination. Mean maternal age was 35.1 years. The spectrum of anatomical features was similar to that observed in neonates or older infants with trisomy 13, namely, holoprosencephaly, cyclopia, microphthalmia, cleft palate and lip, cardiac defect, polydactyly, and cystic kidney. Kidney weights were significantly increased above normal in eight of nine fetuses. Histologically, the cortex of these kidneys showed increased mitotic activity and blastemic appearance, which extended deep into the medullary areas. The weights and histology of other organs were normal except for slight increases in spleen weight.  相似文献

Four formaldehyde-resistant yeasts were isolated from soil. Three were tentatively identified as Debaryomyces vanriji and one as Trichosporon penicillatum. These yeasts almost completely consumed formaldehyde at 0.15 to 0.55% in growth medium containing glucose as carbon source, but the carbon of formaldehyde was not incorporated into the cell constituents. In formaldehyde-containing medium, yeast growth occurred after formaldehyde consumption. The yeasts showed relatively high activities of formaldehyde dehydrogenase, S-formylglutathione hydrolase and formate dehydrogenase. The resistance to formaldehyde is attributed to detoxification by oxidation.  相似文献

Ticks and blood samples were collected from wild sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) during a hunting season (August to October) of 1991 at a selected location in Hokkaido, Japan. Ixodes persulcatus (adult and nymph) and I. ovatus (adult) were the common ticks on sika deer. Spirochetes were detected in the midgut of the ticks by the indirect peroxidase-conjugated antibody staining method and by dark-field microscopy after cultivation. By the reactive pattern of monoclonal antibodies, isolates were considered to belong to Borrelia garinii or B. japonica. In an antibody test, the percentage of seropositive deer was 69.0%. Most of the adult sika deer were positive for antibodies to the spirochetes. There are significant age-dependency in antibody level and seropositive rate. The surveillance of deer should be valuable in monitoring the transmission risk of B. burgdorferi sensu lato in nature.  相似文献

Chronic blockade of cholinergic transmission with atropine resulted in a decrease in atropine-induced activity in the rats, whereas apomorphine - induced locomotion was enhanced. Maximal binding of 3H-quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB), a muscarinic antagonist, to homogenate of cerebral cortex, striatum and hippocampus was significantly higher in chronic atropine-treated rats than in control animals. No difference was observed in KD value of the specific 3H-QNB binding or in ID50 value of oxotremorine in inhibiting 3H-QNB binding. No change in the specific binding of 3H-spiroperidol, a dopaminergic antagonist, was observed in those three regions of brains of chronic atropine-treated rats when it was compared with that of control animals. The role of brain muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in behavioral responses is discussed relating an effect of dopaminergic neurons on cholinergic activities.  相似文献

In previous studies, we have shown that the reproductive toxicity of N2O in rats is prevented by the co-administration of either halothane or isoflurane, whereas treatment with folinic acid, which should reverse the effects of N2O on DNA production, does not prevent toxicity. These results cast doubt on the commonly held theory that inactivation of methionine synthase is the sole cause of N2O-induced reproductive toxicity, and suggest the need for other hypotheses. One such possibility is that N2O causes adverse reproductive toxicity secondary to its sympathomimetic effects. As a first step to test this theory, we studied the effects of phenoxybenzamine (PX), an alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist, on N2O-induced reproductive toxicity using a well-established in vivo rat model. On day 8 of gestation (plug day = day 0), 130 timed-pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were injected s.c. with either 0.5 ml of either 0.9% saline (control and N2O alone groups) or PX (0.5, 5, or 50 micrograms/kg) in 0.9% saline, the latter the maximum tolerated PX dose. They were then exposed to either air (control) or 60% N2O for 24 hours (all other groups). On day 20 of gestation, cesarean sections were performed and the fetuses were removed and examined for either visceral of skeletal abnormalities. Compared with control, treatment with N2O alone resulted in increased incidences of fetal resorptions, major and minor visceral abnormalities, and minor skeletal abnormalities.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
