Evolutionary models have been used to explain parental child homicide. One idea is that children with low fitness value to their parents will be less loved and cared for and therefore more at risk in conflict situations. It is then important to investigate if conflicts with the children are the major pattern in cases of parental child homicide. The aim of this study is to survey the background circumstances of parental child homicide in Sweden and relate them to the evolutionary model suggested. We more specifically investigate if the homicides occur in conflict situations with the child, the frequency of several victims (including the partner or former partner) and if there are differences in characteristics of homicides between stepparents and genetic parents. Our results show that parental child homicide is a heterogeneous phenomenon, where relatively few cases were the result of a conflict with the child‐victims. Instead severe conflicts between parents were the most common circumstance in which children were killed. Many children were victims of an extended suicide, which often included several members of the family. Step‐parents were more likely to kill children aggressively in conflicts with them than genetic parents. The complexity of the phenomenon suggests that an evolutionary model based upon a mechanism related to conflicts with the child‐victim has limited explanatory value on parental child homicide in general. 相似文献

New Zealand fur seals are one of many pinniped species that survived the commercial sealing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in dangerously low numbers. After the enforcement of a series of protection measures in the early twentieth century, New Zealand fur seals began to recover from the brink of extinction. We examined the New Zealand fur seal populations of Banks Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand using the mitochondrial DNA control region. We identified a panmictic population structure around Banks Peninsula. The most abundant haplotype in the area showed a slight significant aggregated structure. The Horseshoe Bay colony showed the least number of shared haplotypes with other colonies, suggesting a different origin of re-colonisation of this specific colony. The effective population size of the New Zealand fur seal population at Banks Peninsula was estimated at approximately 2500 individuals. The exponential population growth rate parameter for the area was 35, which corresponds to an expanding population. In general, samples from adjacent colonies shared 4.4 haplotypes while samples collected from colonies separated by between five and eight bays shared 1.9 haplotypes. The genetic data support the spill-over dynamics of colony expansion already suggested for this species. Approximate Bayesian computations analysis suggests re-colonisation of the area from two main clades identified across New Zealand with a most likely admixture coefficient of 0.41 to form the Banks Peninsula population. Approximate Bayesian computations analysis estimated a founder population size of approximately 372 breeding individuals for the area, which then rapidly increased in size with successive waves of external recruitment. The population of fur seals in the area is probably in the late phase of maturity in the colony expansion dynamic. 相似文献

The low molecular weight phosphotyrosine protein phosphatase (LMW-PTP) is phosphorylated by Src and Src-related kinases both in vitro and in vivo; in Jurkat cells, and in NIH-3T3 cells, it becomes tyrosine-phosphorylated upon stimulation by PDGF. In this study we show that pp60Src phosphorylates in vitro the enzyme at two tyrosine residues, Tyr131 and Tyr132, previously indicated as the main phosphorylation sites of the enzyme, whereas phosphorylation by the PDGF-R kinase is much less effective and not specific. The effects of LMW-PTP phosphorylation at each tyrosine residue were investigated by using Tyr131 and Tyr132 mutants. We found that the phosphorylation at either residue has differing effects on the enzyme behaviour: Tyr131 phosphorylation is followed by a strong (about 25-fold) increase of the enzyme specific activity, whereas phosphorylation at Tyr132 leads to Grb2 recruitment. These differing effects are discussed on the light of the enzyme structure. 相似文献

Surface properties of cathode particles play important roles in the transport of ions and electrons and they may ultimately dominate cathode's performance and stability in lithium‐ion batteries. Through the use of carefully prepared Li1.2Ni0.13Mn0.54Co0.13O2 crystal samples with six distinct morphologies, surface transition‐metal redox activities and crystal structural transformation are investigated as a function of surface area and surface crystalline orientation. Complementary depth‐profiled core‐level spectroscopy, namely, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and atomic‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, are applied in the study, presenting a fine example of combining advanced diagnostic techniques with a well‐defined model system of battery materials. The present study reports the following findings: (1) a thin layer of defective spinel with reduced transition metals, similar to what is reported on cycled conventional secondary particles in the literature, is found on pristine oxide surface even before cycling, and (2) surface crystal structure and chemical composition of both pristine and cycled particles are facet dependent. Oxide structural and cycling stabilities improve with maximum expression of surface facets stable against transition‐metal reduction. The intricate relationships among morphology, surface reactivity and structural transformation, electrochemical performance, and stability of the cathode materials are revealed. 相似文献

1. The response of three tropical cladocerans to a gradient of resource quality was compared in a series of growth bioassays using seston collected from five lakes of different depth and trophic structure in Michigan, U.S.A. To assess the food quality in terms of digestibility, assimilation experiments were performed with 32P‐labelled seston from the same lakes. Animals were also analysed for P‐content in their tissues at the end of these assays. 2. In general, assimilation efficiency was higher when animals fed on seston from shallow compared to deep lakes, and was significantly correlated with growth rates, suggesting that shallow lakes have the best food resources in terms of digestibility and P availability. 3. Results also showed that all cladoceran species responded similarly to the resource gradient, with lower growth rates in deep lakes and higher growth rates in shallow lakes, although the strength of response (sensitivity) was different among the species tested. 4. The cladoceran Moina micrura was the most sensitive species, and also displayed the highest P‐content and maximal growth rate, a pattern consistent with the growth rate hypothesis. 5. However, seston C : P ratio and growth rates in the different resources did not correlate with the animals’ P‐contents, showing an uncoupling between RNA‐phosphorus demands for growth and seston food quality. 6. In conclusion, our results support the idea that digestion resistance in algae is a major constraint to cladocerans in natural plankton communities. 相似文献

Membrane proteins play a fundamental role in human disease and therapy, but suffer from a lack of structural and functional information compared to their soluble counterparts. The paucity of membrane protein structures is primarily due to the unparalleled difficulties in obtaining detergent-solubilized membrane proteins at sufficient levels and quality. We have developed an in vitro evolution strategy for optimizing the levels of detergent-solubilized membrane protein that can be overexpressed and purified from recombinant Escherichia coli. Libraries of random mutants for nine membrane proteins were screened for expression using a novel implementation of the colony filtration blot. In only one cycle of directed evolution were significant improvements of membrane protein yield obtained for five out of nine proteins. In one case, the yield of detergent-solubilized membrane protein was increased 40-fold. 相似文献

Adenylyltransferase (GlnE) catalyzes the reversible adenylylation of glutamine synthetase. In this report we present, for the first time, evidence for a peroxiredoxin activity of Rhodospirillum rubrum GlnE, through the carboxyl-terminal AhpC/thiol-specific antioxidant (TSA) domain. The combination of GlnE and AhpC/TSA domains within the same polypeptide constitutes a unique domain architecture that has not previously been identified among proteobacteria. 相似文献

A self-contained, climate-controlled box for exposing fire ants to attack by Pseudacteon parasitoids was developed. The initial system, which is being used to rear Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier, consists of large (about 244 cm L × 97 cm W × 50 cm H), well-ventilated boxes (“attack boxes”) housed in a climate-controlled room (approx. 28 °C, 80% RH, 12:12 (L:D) h). Adult flies emerge into the boxes, which contain live host ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren). Host ants are confined in a series of trays within the box, each containing a pair of inverted cups under which the ants can hide. The cups alternate up and down, inducing the ants to trail back and forth within each tray. A modified system used for Pseudacteon curvatus Borgmeier consists of closed boxes, through which preconditioned air is pumped to maintain high relative humidity. Steam is used to generate humidity in a small, temperature-controlled room from which conditioned air is drawn, and infrared heating elements mounted above the attack box prevent condensation. This new system maintains high relative humidity (range 80–90%) crucial for activity and survival of P. curvatus. System performance was monitored in 4 ways: (1) environmental conditions within the system (RH, temperature, dew point, and light intensity); (2) production of P. curvatus; (3) successful development and emergence of P. curvatus; and (4) attack rates throughout the box. The modified system is capable of producing >1400 flies/day/attack box.
