Poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) has become an attractive biomaterial in research and development for past few years. It is natural bio-based aliphatic polyester produced by many types of bacteria. Due to its biodegradable, biocompatible, and eco-friendly nature, PHB can be used in line with bioactive species. However, high production cost, thermal instability, and poor mechanical properties limit its desirable applications. So there is need to incorporate PHB with other materials or biopolymers for the development of some novel PHB based biocomposites for value addition. Many attempts have been employed to incorporate PHB with other biomaterials (or biopolymers) to develop sustainable biocomposites. In this review, some recent developments in the synthesis of PHB based biocomposites and their biomedical, packaging and tissue engineering applications have been focused. The development of biodegradable PHB based biocomposites with improved mechanical properties could be used to overcome its native limitations hence to open new possibilities for industrial applications.  相似文献

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying the wAlbB Wolbachia strain show a reduced capacity to transmit dengue virus. wAlbB has been introduced into wild Ae. aegypti populations in several field sites in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where it has persisted at high frequency for more than 2 years and significantly reduced dengue incidence. Although these encouraging results indicate that wAlbB releases can be an effective dengue control strategy, the long-term success depends on wAlbB maintaining high population frequencies and virus transmission inhibition, and both could be compromised by Wolbachia–host coevolution in the field. Here, wAlbB-carrying Ae. aegypti collected from the field 20 months after the cessation of releases showed no reduction in Wolbachia density or tissue distribution changes compared to a wAlbB laboratory colony. The wAlbB strain continued to induce complete unidirectional cytoplasmic incompatibility, showed perfect maternal transmission under laboratory conditions, and retained its capacity to inhibit dengue. Additionally, a field-collected wAlbB line was challenged with Malaysian dengue patient blood, and showed significant blocking of virus dissemination to the salivary glands. These results indicate that wAlbB continues to inhibit currently circulating strains of dengue in field populations of Ae. aegypti, and provides additional support for the continued scale-up of Wolbachia wAlbB releases for dengue control.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Novel control strategies for mosquito-borne diseases’.  相似文献

Globally, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in females and is one of the leading causes of cancer death in women. The advancement in the targeted therapies and the slight understanding of the molecular cascades of the disease have led to small improvement in the rate of survival of breast cancer patients. However, metastasis and resistance to the current drugs still remain as challenges in the management of breast cancer patients. Metastasis, potentially, leads to failure of the available treatment, and thereby, makes the research on metastatic suppressors a high priority. Tumor metastasis suppressors are several genes and their protein products that have the capability of arresting the metastatic process without affecting the tumor formation. The metastasis suppressors KAI1 (also known as CD82) has been found to inhibit tumor metastasis in various types of solid cancers, including breast cancer. KAI1 was identified as a metastasis suppressor that inhibits the process of metastasis by regulating several mechanisms, including cell motility and invasion, induction of cell senescence, cell–cell adhesion and apoptosis. KAI1 is a member of tetraspanin membrane protein family. It interacts with other tetraspanins, chemokines and integrins to control diverse signaling pathways, which are crucial for protein trafficking and intracellular communication. It follows that better understanding of the molecular events of such genes is needed to develop prognostic biomarkers, and to identify specific therapies for breast cancer patients. This review aims to discuss the role of KAI1/CD82 as a prognosticator in breast cancer.  相似文献

We carried out a three‐tiered genetic analysis of egg‐to‐adult development time and viability in ancestral and derived populations of cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis to test the hypothesis that evolution of these life‐history characters has shaped premating reproductive isolation in this species. First, a common garden experiment with 11 populations from Baja California and mainland Mexico and Arizona reared on two host species revealed significant host plant X region and population interactions for viability and development time, evidence for host plant adaptation. Second, replicated line crosses with flies reared on both hosts revealed autosomal, X chromosome, cytoplasmic, and autosome X cactus influences on development time. Viability differences were influenced by host plants, autosomal dominance, and X chromosomal effects. Many of the F1, F2, and backcross generations showed evidence of heterosis for viability. Third, a QTL analysis of male courtship song and epicuticular hydrocarbon variation based on 1688 Baja × mainland F2 males also revealed eight QTL influencing development time differences. Mainland alleles at six of these loci were associated with longer development times, consistent with population‐level differences. Eight G × E interactions were also detected caused by longer development times of mainland alleles expressed on a mainland host with smaller differences among Baja genotypes reared on the Baja host plant. Four QTL influenced both development time and epicuticular hydrocarbon differences associated with courtship success, and there was a significant QTL‐based correlation between development time and cuticular hydrocarbon variation. Thus, the regional shifts in life histories that evolved once D. mojavensis invaded mainland Mexico from Baja California by shifting host plants were genetically correlated with variation in cuticular hydrocarbon‐based mate preferences.  相似文献

Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was successfully grafted onto sago starch using ceric ammonium nitrate as initiator in aqueous medium. The percentage of grafting increased with increasing concentration of GMA monomer in the range studied. A core-shell configuration had been suggested to account for the hydrophobic behavior of the starch-g-GMA. Fourier transform infrared spectral analysis provided evidence of the grafting of GMA onto the starch. The acrylic double bond participated in the grafting onto the polysaccharide backbone with the glycidyl groups remaining unaffected.

The graft copolymer of starch and glycidyl methacrylate (starch-g-GMA) was incorporated into UV curable formulations using a cationic photoinitiator. In general, the addition of starch-g-GMA increased the flexibility of the cured film. The increasing of starch-g-GMA concentration in the coatings formulation increased the hardness of cured films. Gel content of the cured epoxy resin remained unimpaired by the addition of starch-g-GMA. Increasing the photoinitiator concentration in the coating formulations increased the hardness and as expected decreased the flexibility of the cured film. The gel content increased with increasing photoinitiator concentration. Further experiments are in progress to study the biodegradability of coatings.  相似文献
