ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Genetic factors play a key role in determining resistance/susceptibility to infectious disease. Susceptibility of the human host to malaria infection has been reported to be influenced by genetic factors, which could be confounders if not taken into account in the assessment of the efficacy of interventions against malaria. This study aimed to assess the relationship between haemoglobin genotypes and malaria in children under five years in a site being characterized for future malaria vaccine trials. METHODS: The study population consisted of 452 children living in four rural villages. Hb genotype was determined at enrolment. Clinical malaria incidence was evaluated over a one-year period using combined active and passive surveillance. Prevalence of infection was evaluated via bi-annual cross-sectional surveys. At each follow-up visit, children received a brief clinical examination and thick and thin blood films were prepared for malaria diagnosis. A clinical malaria was defined as Plasmodium falciparum parasitaemia >2,500 parasites/ul and axillary temperature [greater than or equal to]37.5degreesC or reported fever over the previous 24 hours. RESULTS: Frequencies of Hb genotypes were 73.2% AA; 15.0% AC; 8.2% AS; 2.2% CC; 1.1% CS and 0.2% SS. Prevalence of infection at enrolment ranged from 61.9%-54.1% among AA, AC and AS children. After one year follow-up, clinical malaria incidence (95% CI) (episodes per person-year) was 1.9 (1.7-2.0) in AA, 1.6 (1.4-2.1) in AC, and 1.7 (1.4-2.0) in AS children. AC genotype was associated with lower incidence of clinical malaria relative to AA genotype among children aged 1-2 years [rate ratio (95% CI) 0.66 (0.42-1.05)] and 2-3 years [rate ratio (95% CI) 0.37 (0.18-0.75)]; an association of opposite direction was however apparent among children aged 3-4 years. AS genotype was associated with lower incidence of clinical malaria relative to AA genotype among children aged 2-3 years [rate ratio (95% CI) 0.63 (0.40-1.01)]. CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort of children, AC or AS genotype was associated with lower risk of clinical malaria relative to AA genotype only among children aged one to three years. It would be advisable for clinical studies of malaria in endemic regions to consider haemoglobin gene differences as a potentially important confounder, particularly among younger children. 相似文献

Siderophore producing potential of 20 fungal isolates (same 10 species from each marine and terrestrial habitat) were examined and compared. Except marine Aspergillus flavus, all isolates produced siderophores as evidenced by positive reaction in FeCl3 test, CAS assay and CAS agar plate test. The results indicated widespread occurrence of siderophores in both the habitats. Examination of the chemical nature of siderophores revealed that mucoraceous fungi produced carboxylate, while others produced hydroxamate siderophores. Thus, the nature of siderophore was found to be independent of habitat. Among all the isolates, Cunninghamella elegans (marine form) was maximum siderophore producer (1987.5 μg/ml) followed by terrestrial form of C. elegans (1248.75 μg/ml). There was no marked variation in siderophore concentration of Penicillium funiculosum strains. Comparison of quantification of siderophore production between marine and terrestrial revealed that four terrestrial isolates (Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus ochraceous, Penicillium chrysogenum, Penicillium citrinum) were ahead in siderophore production, while, the other four marine isolates (Aspergillus versicolor, C. elegans, Rhizopus sp., Syncephalastrum racemosum) were found to be more potent siderophore producers, indicating that they were equally competent. 相似文献

We tested whether the recently proposed two‐part measure of degree of invasion (DI) of a community relating exotic proportion of cover to exotic proportion of richness can characterize patterns of plant invasions at multiple savannah sites in Southern Africa. Regression analysis was performed on transformed data to assess how this two‐part measure of DI compares to other metrics of community invasibility. The results indicate that at the plot level, the absolute cover of exotics was not significantly related to native cover for three sites out of four assessed (R2 ≤ 0.17; P > 0.05). Also, at all four sites, no significant relationships were detected between native and exotic plant richness at both the 1‐m2 and 400‐m2 plot scales. By contrast, significant (P < 0.05) positive linear relationships were observed between exotic proportion of richness and exotic proportion of cover at all sites (R2 was as high as 0.67 and 0.97 for two sites). Our results indicate that the new two‐part measure of DI is able to characterize patterns of plant invasions across plant communities in African savannahs. 相似文献

The effect of vermicompost leachate (VCL, low-cost biostimulant) on the growth, elemental (macro and micro-nutrients) and phytochemical content as well as the antioxidant potential of Drimiopsis maculata was evaluated. Three dilutions (1:5; 1:10 and 1:20) of VCL were tested and the cultivation lasted for 3 months. In addition to the recorded growth parameters, dried and ground plant materials (leaves and bulbs) were evaluated for nutrients, phenolic acids and antioxidant capacity. Vermicompost leachate application enhanced the growth of D. maculata, particularly, the leaves (VCL 1:10) and bulbs (VCL 1:20) which were significantly bigger than the controls. Apart from the concentration of phosphorus which was significantly lower in the leaves of VCL (1:20)-treated plants, the quantity of all four macro-nutrients analysed were similar with and without VCL. Similar observations were also demonstrated in the majority of quantified micro-nutrients in D. maculata. Relative to the control, VCL-treated plants had higher concentrations of the 10 phenolic acids quantified in the leaves. However, the majority of the quantified phenolic acids were not significantly enhanced in bulbs. Antioxidant activity of D. maculata extracts was generally higher in leaves than in the bulbs. The leaf extract from VCL (1:10 and 1:20)-treated plants exhibited lower oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) when compared to the control. However, bulbs from VCL (1:5) treatment had significantly higher ORAC than the control. Gallium arsenide (GaAs), a group III-VA intermetallic semiconductor, possesses superior electronic and optical properties and has a wide application in electronic industry. Exposure to GaAs in the semiconductor industries could be a possible occupational risk. The aim of the present study was to determine the dose-dependent effect of single oral exposure to GaAs (500, 1000, or 2000 mg/kg) on some biochemical variables in heme synthesis pathway and few selected physiological variables at d 1, 7, and 15 following administration. The results indicate that GaAs produced a significant effect on the activity of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) in blood and heart (particularly at d 7) following exposure to 2000 mg/kg, whereas urinary δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) excretion was elevated only at d 7. No marked influence of GaAs on blood hemoglobin, zinc protoporphyrin, and packed cell volume was noticed. Blood glutathione (GSH) was significantly reduced at d 7, but remained unchanged at two other time intervals. On the other hand, heart GSH contents remained uninfluenced on GaAs exposure. Most of the physiological variables, viz. blood pressure, heart and respiration rate, and twitch response, remained unchanged, except for some minor alterations observed at d 7 and 15 following exposure to GaAs at a dose of 2000 mg/kg. Blood gallium concentration was not detectable in normal animals and rats exposed to 500 mg/kg GaAs. Blood arsenic concentration was, however, detectable even at the a lower dose level and increased in a dose-dependent manner.
