Three populations of the grasshopper Trimerotropis pallidipennis from southern Argentina have been studied cytologically. A very characteristic B-chromosome was found in all three. They also showed geographical variability in respect of the presence of pericentric inversions, and the inversion system was found to influence chiasma frequency. The Laguna Blanca population, which is on the hypothetical pathway the species is believed to have followed during its migration from northern to southern latitudes, has the same karyotype composition as the N. American form, with fixed inversions in the 3 largest autosomes and the X-chromosome. Its members have a high total chiasma frequency and a great number of interstitial chiasmata. The Sierra de la Ventana population, situated at the absolute eastern border of the species distribution is highly polymorphic with respect to the presence of inversions in the medium chromosomes. Its members have the lowest total chiasma frequency and a greatly reduced number of interstitial chiasmata. Situated geographically between the other two, the Choele-Choel population has the highest frequency of inversions and many of them are homozygous. Its members have a higher total chiasma frequency than that observed in specimens from Sierra de la Ventana, and a greatly reduced number of interstitial chiasmata, similar to that observed in individuals from the latter population.  相似文献

Fluctuations in backbone dihedral angles in the α-helical conformation of homopolypeptides are studied based on an assumption that the conformational energy function of a polypeptide consisting of n amino-acid residues can be approximated by a 2n-dimensional parabola around the minimum point in the range of fluctuations. A formula is derived that relates 〈ΔθiΔθj〉, the mean value of the product of deviations of dihedral angles ?i and ψi (collectively designated by θi) from their energy minimum values, with a matrix inverse to the second derivative matrix F ,n of the conformational energy function at the minimum point. A method of calculating the inverse matrix F n?1 explicitly is given. The method is applied to calculating 〈ΔθiΔθj〉 for the α-helices of poly(L -alanine) and polyglycine. The autocorrelations 〈(Δ?i)2〉 and 〈(Δψi)2〉 at 300°K are found to be about 66 deg2 and 49 deg2, respectively, for poly(L -alanine), and 84 deg2 and 116 deg2, respectively, for polyglycine. The length of correlations of fluctuations along the chain is found for both polypeptides to be about eight residues long.  相似文献

The tautomerism of sugars showing complex mutarotation has been analyzed mathematically based on a scheme of three components. More-complete but complex schemes are shown to be reducible to the three-component scheme, because the supposed intermediates of interconversion can be neglected in the kinetics when their equilibrium contents are very small and because two furanose tautomers can be regarded as one component under appropriate conditions. The kinetics of the three-component scheme have been fully studied and are shown to explain successfully the tautomerism of most of the sugars. The tautomerism of D-galactose has been analyzed in especial detail. From the polarimetric data and the equilibrium content of α-pyranose, the kinetic rate-constants for D-galactose were determined and found consistent with all other experimental data. The slow and fast processes of complex mutarotation of D-galactose are shown to correspond approximately to pyranose-pyranose and pyranose-furanose interconversions, respectively.  相似文献

When the major polar lipid of purple membrane, a dialkyl analogue of phosphatidyl glycerophosphate, is treated with phospholipase D under the usual assay conditions for this enzyme, the reaction yields dialkylglycerol and glycerol bisphosphate, i.e. the kind of products that would be expected from a phospholipase C reaction. The effect is seen both in native purple membranes and with the pure phospholipid in the form of liposomes. The specific activity and kinetic parameters Km and Vmax of phospholipase D for the purple membrane phospholipid are similar to those for egg phosphatidylcholine. The presence of phospholipase C impurities in the phospholipase D preparations has been ruled out as an explanation for the above observations. A hypothesis is suggested, taking into account the peculiar headgroup structure of the bacterial lipid, to explain the seemingly anomalous enzyme behavior.  相似文献

The kinetics of purple membrane dark adaptation were studied at pH 5 and 7, in the presence and absence of the nonionic detergent Triton X-100. The effect of both sublytic and lytic surfactant concentrations has been considered. Our results show that: (a) dark adaptation is faster at pH 5 than at pH 7, (b) dark adaptation is slower, and of smaller amplitude, in the presence than in the absence of Triton X-100. The data may be interpreted in terms of a simple first-order kinetic model, according to which light-dark adaptation would depend basically on the equilibrium between the 13-cis- and the all-trans-isomers. The experiments also suggest that at pH 5, but not at pH 7, solubilizing surfactant concentrations produce a considerable increase in the velocity of the dark adaptation reaction, perhaps through changes in the microenvironment of a protonable group.  相似文献

Although fatigue is a common and distressing symptom in cancer survivors, the mechanism of fatigue is not fully understood. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relation between the fatigue and mindfulness of breast cancer survivors using anxiety, depression, pain, loneliness, and sleep disturbance as mediators. Path analysis was performed to examine direct and indirect associations between mindfulness and fatigue. Participants were breast cancer survivors who visited a breast surgery department at a university hospital in Japan for hormonal therapy or regular check-ups after treatment. The questionnaire measured cancer-related-fatigue, mindfulness, anxiety, depression, pain, loneliness, and sleep disturbance. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected from medical records. Two-hundred and seventy-nine breast cancer survivors were registered, of which 259 answered the questionnaire. Ten respondents with incomplete questionnaire data were excluded, resulting in 249 participants for the analyses. Our final model fit the data well (goodness of fit index = .993; adjusted goodness of fit index = .966; comparative fit index = .999; root mean square error of approximation = .016). Mindfulness, anxiety, depression, pain, loneliness, and sleep disturbance were related to fatigue, and mindfulness had the most influence on fatigue (β = − .52). Mindfulness affected fatigue not only directly but also indirectly through anxiety, depression, pain, loneliness, and sleep disturbance. The study model helps to explain the process by which mindfulness affects fatigue. Our results suggest that mindfulness has both direct and indirect effects on the fatigue of breast cancer survivors and that mindfulness can be used to more effectively reduce their fatigue. It also suggests that health care professionals should be aware of factors such as anxiety, depression, pain, loneliness, and sleep disturbance in their care for fatigue of breast cancer survivors. Larval recruitment is essential for sustaining coral communities and a fundamental tool in some interventions for reef restoration. To improve larval supply and post‐settlement survival in sexually assisted coral restoration efforts, an integrated in situ collector system, the larval cradle, was designed to collect spawned gametes then culture the resulting larvae until settled on artificial substrates. The final design of the larval cradle was cylindrical, a nylon mesh structure with a volume of 9 m3, suspended in the sea and extending vertically toward the seabed. We found three key design features that improved the efficiency of the apparatus: (1) an open area of sea surface and mesh size of less than 100 μm produced high fertilization and optimal survival (>90%), (2) a special skirt‐shaped net (3 m in diameter) with a connection hose for attaching the cradle to collect bundles from many adult colonies over a wide area and at various depths, and (3) adding short square tube pieces, called square hollow sections, as a substrate for enhancing larval settlement and survival, to a larval cradle at 4 days after spawning was optimal for uniform settlement. This system allowed not only the collection of several million eggs, but also subsequent production of several thousand settled juvenile corals, without land facilities. Our design achieved several hundred times higher survival for early life stages of Acropora tenuis compared to nature.  相似文献

The genus Acropora comprises the most diverse and abundant scleractinian corals (Anthozoa, Cnidaria) in coral reefs, the most diverse marine ecosystems on Earth. However, the genetic basis for the success and wide distribution of Acropora are unknown. Here, we sequenced complete genomes of 15 Acropora species and 3 other acroporid taxa belonging to the genera Montipora and Astreopora to examine genomic novelties that explain their evolutionary success. We successfully obtained reasonable draft genomes of all 18 species. Molecular dating indicates that the Acropora ancestor survived warm periods without sea ice from the mid or late Cretaceous to the Early Eocene and that diversification of Acropora may have been enhanced by subsequent cooling periods. In general, the scleractinian gene repertoire is highly conserved; however, coral- or cnidarian-specific possible stress response genes are tandemly duplicated in Acropora. Enzymes that cleave dimethlysulfonioproprionate into dimethyl sulfide, which promotes cloud formation and combats greenhouse gasses, are the most duplicated genes in the Acropora ancestor. These may have been acquired by horizontal gene transfer from algal symbionts belonging to the family Symbiodiniaceae, or from coccolithophores, suggesting that although functions of this enzyme in Acropora are unclear, Acropora may have survived warmer marine environments in the past by enhancing cloud formation. In addition, possible antimicrobial peptides and symbiosis-related genes are under positive selection in Acropora, perhaps enabling adaptation to diverse environments. Our results suggest unique Acropora adaptations to ancient, warm marine environments and provide insights into its capacity to adjust to rising seawater temperatures.  相似文献
