Basic data required for the maintenance, improvement and development of inland fisheries within the Anglian Water Authority area are derived from surveys carried out since 1977. All open river systems are sampled on a 3-year cycle and basic data are obtained on species composition, density and biomass as well as year-class structure and growth rates of dominant species.
The netting and electrofishing gear and techniques used to obtain quantitative and semi-quantitative samples from rivers, drainage channels and the Norfolk Broads are described and their advantages and disadvantages discussed. The mark and recapture and multiple removal techniques employed with these methods are described and an assessment given of sampling efficiency in different situations.  相似文献

It has become amply clear that mitochondrial function defined by quality, quantity, dynamics, homeostasis, and regulated by mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis is a critical metric of human aging and disease. As a consequence, therapeutic interventions that can improve mitochondrial function can have a profound impact on human health and longevity. Kisspeptins are neuropeptides belonging to the family of metastasis suppressors that are known to regulate functions like fertility, reproduction, and metabolism. Using SKNSH cell line, hippocampus explant cultures and hippocampus of aging Wistar rat models, we show that Kisspeptin-10 (Kp) induces autophagy and mitophagy via calcium, Ca2+/CaM-dependent protein kinase kinase β (CaMKKβ), AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and Unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase (ULK1) signaling pathway that is independent of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). Intriguingly, Kp administration in vivo also results in the enhancement of mitochondrial number, complex I activity, and Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) levels. This study uncovers potential effects of Kp in protecting mitochondrial health and as a possible therapeutic intervention to hippocampus associated impairments such as memory, cognitive aging, and other diseases linked to mitochondrial dysfunction.  相似文献

The ability to sustain high swimming speeds is believed to be an important factor affecting resource acquisition in fishes. While we have gained insights into how fin morphology and motion influences swimming performance in coral reef fishes, the role of other traits, such as body shape, remains poorly understood. We explore the ability of two mechanistic models of the causal relationship between body fineness ratio and endurance swimming-performance to predict maximum prolonged-swimming speed (Umax) among 84 fish species from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. A drag model, based on semi-empirical data on the drag of rigid, submerged bodies of revolution, was applied to species that employ pectoral-fin propulsion with a rigid body at U max. An alternative model, based on the results of computer simulations of optimal shape in self-propelled undulating bodies, was applied to the species that swim by body-caudal-fin propulsion at Umax. For pectoral-fin swimmers, Umax increased with fineness, and the rate of increase decreased with fineness, as predicted by the drag model. While the mechanistic and statistical models of the relationship between fineness and Umax were very similar, the mechanistic (and statistical) model explained only a small fraction of the variance in Umax. For body-caudal-fin swimmers, we found a non-linear relationship between fineness and Umax, which was largely negative over most of the range of fineness. This pattern fails to support either predictions from the computational models or standard functional interpretations of body shape variation in fishes. Our results suggest that the widespread hypothesis that a more optimal fineness increases endurance-swimming performance via reduced drag should be limited to fishes that swim with rigid bodies.  相似文献

The rattail fish, Coryphaenoides armatus, lives at ocean depths of 3000 m. As an adaptation for pumping oxygen into the swim bladder against the extreme pressures at the ocean bottom, the hemoglobin from this fish at low pH exhibits an extraordinarily low affinity for ligands. In this study, continuous wave and time-resolved Raman techniques are used to probe the binding site in this hemoglobin. The findings show an association between the low-affinity material and a highly strained heme-proximal histidine linkage. The transient Raman studies reveal differences in the protein structural dynamics at pH 6 and 8. The emerging picture derived from both this and earlier studies is that in vertebrate hemoglobins the heme-proximal histidine linkage represents a key channel through which species- and solution-dependent variations in the globin are communicated both statically and dynamically to the heme to produce an extensive range of ligand binding properties. Also presented is a new model that relates both intensity and frequency of the resonance Raman band involving the iron-proximal histidine stretching mode to specific protein controlled structural degrees of freedom. There emerges from this model a mechanism whereby modifications in the proximal heme pocket can further reduce the affinity of an already highly strained T state structure of hemoglobin.  相似文献
