Bumblebees and other eusocial bees offer a unique opportunity to analyze the evolution of body size differences between sexes. The workers, being sterile females, are not subject to selection for reproductive function and thus provide a natural control for parsing the effects of selection on reproductive function (i.e., sexual and fecundity selection) from other natural selection. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, we explored the allometric relationships among queens, males, and workers in 70 species of bumblebees (Bombus sp.). We found hyperallometry in thorax width for males relative to workers, indicating greater evolutionary divergence of body size in males than in sterile females. This is consistent with the hypothesis that selection for reproductive function, most probably sexual selection, has caused divergence in male size among species. The slope for males on workers was significantly steeper than that for queens on workers and the latter did not depart from isometry, providing further evidence of greater evolutionary divergence in male size than female size, and no evidence that reproductive selection has accelerated divergence of females. We did not detect significant hyperallometry when male size was regressed directly on queen size and our results thus add the genus Bombus to the increasing list of clades that have female-larger sexual size dimorphism and do not conform to Rensch's rule when analyzed according to standard methodology. Nevertheless, by using worker size as a common control, we were able to demonstrate that bumblee species do show the evolutionary pattern underlying Rensch's rule, that being correlated evolution of body size in males and females, but with greater evolutionary divergence in males. 相似文献
Heterokaryon incompatibility among Aspergillus niger strains is a widespread phenomenon that is observed as the inability to form stable heterokaryons. The genetic basis of heterokaryon incompatibility reactions is well established in some sexual filamentous fungi but largely unknown in presumed asexual species, such as A. niger. To test whether the genes that determine heterokaryon incompatibility in Neurospora crassa, such as het-c, vib-1 and pin-c, have a similar function in A. niger, we performed a short in silico search for homologues of these genes in the A. niger and several related genomes. For het-c, pin-c and vib-1 we did indeed identify putative orthologues. We then screened a genetically diverse worldwide collection of incompatible black Aspergilli for polymorphisms in the het-c orthologue. No size variation was observed in the variable het-c indel region that determines the specificity in N. crassa. Sequence comparison showed only minor variation in the number of glutamine coding triplets. However, introduction of one of the three N. crassa alleles (het-c2) in A. niger by transformation resulted in an abortive phenotype, reminiscent of the heterokaryon incompatibility in N. crassa. We conclude that although the genes required are present and the het-c homologue could potentially function as a heterokaryon incompatibility gene, het-c has no direct function in heterokaryon incompatibility in A. niger because the necessary allelic variation is absent. 相似文献
Polyacylonitrile fibers (PAN) surfaces were modified with chemical polymerization of conductive polyaniline (PANI) in the presence of potassium dichromate as an oxidizing agent. The effect of aniline concentration on the grafting efficiency and on the electrical surface resistance of PAN/PANI composite fibers was investigated. The surface resistance of the conductive composite fibers in this work was found to be between 8.0 and 0.5 kΩ/cm. As the amount of grafted PANI increased on the PAN fibers the electrical resistance of composite fibers decreased. The PAN/PANI composite fibers were characterized by SEM and FTIR studies. Composite PAN/PANI fibers were used for reversible immobilization of invertase. The immobilization efficiency and the activity of the immobilized invertase (from 1.0 mg/mL invertase solution at pH 5.5) were increased with increasing PANI contents of the composite fibers. The maximum amount of immobilized enzyme onto composite fibers containing 2.0% PANI was about 76.6 mg/g. The optimum pH for the free enzyme was observed at 5.0. On the other hand, immobilized invertase yielded a broad optimum pH profile between pH 5.0 and 7.0. Immobilized invertase exhibited 83% of its original activity even after two months storage at 4 °C while the free enzyme showed only 7% of its initial activity. 相似文献
Bacterial communities were examined in replicate lab-scale activated sludge reactors after a period of several months of enrichment with non-ionic nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) surfactants. Four sequential batch reactors were fed with synthetic sewage, two of which received additionally NPE. Small subunit rDNA-derived denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis (DGGE) profiles and 16S rDNA clone libraries were dominated by clones of Gammaproteobacteria class. Sequences of the other codominant rDNA phylotypes observed only in DGGE from NPE-amended reactors were, respectively, associated with the Group III of the Acidobacteria phylum. Intriguingly, 16S rRNA content from abundant Gammaproteobacteria cells was unexpectedly low. In addition to Acidobacteria, rRNA-derived DGGE profiles were dominated by members of the order Burkholderiales (of the Betaproteobacteria) and of the genus Sphingomonas (a member of the Alphaproteobacteria). Specific oligonucleotide probes for the selected ribotypes were designed and applied for quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction and fluorescence in situ hybridization, confirming their dominance in treated reactors. The parallel abundance of unique phylotypes in replicate reactors implies a distinctive selection of dominant organisms, which are better adapted to specialized niches in the highly selective environment. 相似文献
Résumé Chez 44 Babouins,Papio papio (Desm.), appartenant à la collection du Parc zoologique de Paris, distingués en trois groupes, en fonction de l'âge, nous avons pratiqué 101 prélèvements aux niveaux suivants du tube digestif: intestin grêle gros intestin et rectum.C'est chez les animaux les plus âgés que nous avons obtenu les valeurs les plus élevées pour les deux critères étudiés, le pourcentage de positivité et la richesse spécifique des prélèvements et ce, aussi bien en ce qui concerne l'ensemble des levures identifiées que pour les seuls constituants de la flore probable. La fréquence de ces champignons aux divers étages du tube digestif, ainsi que l'incidence saisonnière sur les isolements ont été abordés.
In 44 Baboons,Papio papio (Desm.), of the Zoological Park of Paris, 101 samples have been taken at three levels of the alimentary tract: small intestine, large intestine and rectum. Three groups of subjects have been recognized according to age. The yeasts or the yeast-like flora, have been found with maximum of frequency and diversity in the oldest animals. The variations of the isolation in the three levels of this Mammal's gut and the seasonal influence have been discussed.
A method for studying whole mount flatworm embryos based on freeze-cracking of the eggs is described. This method allows successful
immunohistological and immunocytological studies of whole mount embryos. It does not require the use of sharpened needles
or a microinjection system to puncture the eggshell. Moreover, this method is more practical and less time-consuming than
classical puncturing and much cheaper than the use of a microinjection system. The advantages of this method are illustrated
by results of several immunolocalisation experiments in the macrostomid flatworm Macrostomum lignano. The optimal procedure and crucial steps for this method are discussed.

Although fish consumption has positive health effects, metals accumulated in fish can cause human health risks. In this study, the levels of ten metals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in the Keban Dam Reservoir, which has the biggest rainbow trout production capacity in Turkey, were determined and compared with the maximum permissible levels (MPLs). Also, human health risks associated with rainbow trout consumption were assessed. The metal concentrations in rainbow trout were found below the MPLs. The estimated daily intake of each metal was much lower than the respective tolerable daily intake. The target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal and total THQ for combined metals did not exceed 1, indicating no health risk for consumers. The cancer risk (CR) value for inorganic arsenic was within the acceptable lifetime risk range of 10−6 and 10−4. For carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects, the maximum allowable fish consumption rates were high enough to ensure the human health. According to these results, the consumption of rainbow trout farmed in the Keban Dam Reservoir does not pose a risk on human health.
The proper temporal and spatial expression of genes during plant development is governed, in part, by the regulatory activities of various types of small RNAs produced by the different RNAi pathways. Here we report that transgenic Arabidopsis plants constitutively expressing the rapeseed SB1 SINE retroposon exhibit developmental defects resembling those observed in some RNAi mutants. We show that SB1 RNA interacts with HYL1 (DRB1), a double-stranded RNA-binding protein (dsRBP) that associates with the Dicer homologue DCL1 to produce microRNAs. RNase V1 protection assays mapped the binding site of HYL1 to a SB1 region that mimics the hairpin structure of microRNA precursors. We also show that HYL1, upon binding to RNA substrates, induces conformational changes that force single-stranded RNA regions to adopt a structured helix-like conformation. Xenopus laevis ADAR1, but not Arabidopsis DRB4, binds SB1 RNA in the same region as HYL1, suggesting that SINE RNAs bind only a subset of dsRBPs. Consistently, DCL4-DRB4-dependent miRNA accumulation was unchanged in SB1 transgenic Arabidopsis, whereas DCL1-HYL1-dependent miRNA and DCL1-HYL1-DCL4-DRB4-dependent tasiRNA accumulation was decreased.
