The authors describe their experience with systemic therapy of cavernous haemangiomas making use of interferon alpha. They have successfully used the method in treating two female patients with cavernous haemangiomas in the orbit. In the first patient, the IFN therapy was followed by surgical removal of the tumour. In the second patient, surgical operation was not suitable. After the IFN therapy, the patient's state improved both subjectively and objectively. Decreased level of bFGF in urine prove to be the criterion for successful treatment by IFN. The authors also stress the risk of complications in sucklings. When choosing the method of treatment, they emphasize the necessity of interdisciplinary cooperation.  相似文献

Towards a computational model for -1 eukaryotic frameshifting sites   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
MOTIVATION: Unconventional decoding events are now well acknowledged, but not yet well formalized. In this study, we present a bioinformatics analysis of eukaryotic -1 frameshifting, in order to model this event. RESULTS: A consensus model has already been established for -1 frameshifting sites. Our purpose here is to provide new constraints which make the model more precise. We show how a machine learning approach can be used to refine the current model. We identify new properties that may be involved in frameshifting. Each of the properties found was experimentally validated. Initially, we identify features of the overall model that are to be simultaneously satisfied. We then focus on the following two components: the spacer and the slippery sequence. As a main result, we point out that the identity of the primary structure of the so-called spacer is of great importance. Foam disruption by agitation—the stirring as foam disruption (SAFD) technique—was scaled up to pilot and production scale using Rushton turbines and an up-pumping hydrofoil impeller, the Scaba 3SHP1. The dominating mechanism behind SAFD—foam entrainment—was also demonstrated at production scale. The mechanistic model for SAFD defines a fictitious liquid velocity generated by the (upper) impeller near the dispersion surface, which is correlated with complete foam disruption. This model proved to be scalable, thus enabling the model to be used for the design of SAFD applications. Axial upward pumping impellers appeared to be more effective with respect to SAFD than Rushton turbines, as demonstrated by retrofitting a 12,000 l bioreactor, i.e. the triple Rushton configuration was compared with a mixed impeller configuration from Scaba with a 20% lower ungassed power draw. The retrofitted impeller configuration allowed 10% more broth without risking excessive foaming. In this way a substantial increase in the volumetric productivity of the bioreactor was achieved. Design recommendations for the application of SAFD are given in this paper. Using these recommendations for the design of a 30,000 l scale bioreactor, almost foamless Escherichia coli fermentations were realised. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Wetlands, including peatlands, are the main source of natural methane emission. Well-defined fen microsites have different methane emissions rates, but it is not known whether the methane-producing Archaea communities vary at these sites. Possible horizontal variations of communities, in a natural oligotrophic fen, were analysed by characterizing the methanogens from two well-defined microsites: Eriophorum lawn and Hummock. Community structures were studied at two different layers of the fen, showing, respectively, high and low methane production. The structure of methanogen populations was determined using molecular techniques targeting the 16SrRNA gene and combined denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Results subjected to non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS), diversity indices calculation and phylogenetic analysis revealed that upper layer communities changed with site while deeper layer communities remained the same. Phylogenetic analyses revealed six different clusters of sequences grouping with only two known orders of methanogens. Upper layers of Hummock were dominated by sequences clustering with members of Methanomicrobiales and sequences dominating the upper part of the Eriophorum lawn were related to members of the order Methanosarcinales. Novel methanogenic sequences were found at both sites at both depths. Vegetation characterizing the microsites probably influences the microbial communities in the layers of the fen where methane is produced.  相似文献

In the present paper we have examined the applicability of dimensionless and invariant numbers (DN & IN) to the analysis of the cardiovascular system of mammals, whose functions were measured at standard metabolic conditions. The calculated IN did not change when we compared these figures with those obtained in dogs while they were submitted to graded exercise on a treadmill. In both instances, rest and exercise, the constancy of the IN prevailed, in accordance with Cannon's principle of "homeostasis" (1929). On the contrary, when dogs were examined during a standardized hypovolemic shock, we observed a breakdown of the IN, and the resulting DN evolved as a reliable index of the condition of "heterostasis" as defined by H. Selye. The robustness of the homeostatic regulations is based on high-gain integral feedback mechanisms, while "heterostasis" could be associated with low-gain integral feedback processes, when organisms are submitted to unitary step disturbances or to changes of the set-point at the entrance of the feedback loop.  相似文献

The white-chinned petrel is a subantarctic seabird that requires urgent implementation of conservation measures for the species. At sea, adults suffer heavy mortality due to fisheries' practices. On land, introduced rats prey on chicks at several localities, and we test here if and how rats can be efficiently controlled. Since 1994, we have conducted an intensive rat-control program during each breeding season in a white-chinned petrel colony on Ile de la Possession (150 km2; Crozet archipelago, southern Indian Ocean), which had been monitored since 1986. On the same island, a control white-chinned petrel colony, where no poisoning occurred, was also monitored, and we assessed the seasonal variations of rat abundance. We compared three situations: high rat-poisoning, low rat-poisoning and control conditions without poisoning. Low-poisoning trials performed in our experimental colony between 1988 and 1991 did not lead to higher chick production than for the previous two control years. However, petrel-breeding success was significantly higher when intensive poisoning occurred (50%) than for the previous years (16%). The duration of our study (8 years before intensive poisoning, plus 8 years afterwards), combined with a comparison of petrel annual breeding success between our experimental and control colonies, allowed us to assess more effectively the impact of rats. Forty-one per cent of breeding failures occurring in non-poisoned areas were attributed to rats. We conclude that threatened insular bird populations can be conserved and restored in localities even where total rat eradication is not possible. However, only intensive and repeated (long-term) poisoning will control rats sufficiently.  相似文献

In numerous species, individual dispersal is restricted in space so that "continuous" populations evolve under isolation by distance. A method based on individual genotypes assuming a lattice population model was recently developed to estimate the product Dsigma2, where D is the population density and sigma2 is the average squared parent-offspring distance. We evaluated the influence on this method of both mutation rate and mutation model, with a particular reference to microsatellite markers, as well as that of the spatial scale of sampling. Moreover, we developed and tested a nonparametric bootstrap procedure allowing the construction of confidence intervals for the estimation of Dsigma2. These two objectives prompted us to develop a computer simulation algorithm based on the coalescent theory giving individual genotypes for a continuous population under isolation by distance. Our results show that the characteristics of mutational processes at microsatellite loci, namely the allele size homoplasy generated by stepwise mutations, constraints on allele size, and change of slippage rate with repeat number, have little influence on the estimation of Dsigma2. In contrast, a high genetic diversity (approximately 0.7-0.8), as is commonly observed for microsatellite markers, substantially increases the precision of the estimation. However, very high levels of genetic diversity (>0.85) were found to bias the estimation. We also show that statistics taking into account allele size differences give unreliable estimations (i.e., high variance of Dsigma2 estimation) even under a strict stepwise mutation model. Finally, although we show that this method is reasonably robust with respect to the sampling scale, sampling individuals at a local geographical scale gives more precise estimations of Dsigma2.  相似文献
