Summary As the result of histochemical studies, it has been shown that the lipid droplets in the interstitial cells of the renal medulla of the rat contain simple saturated and unsaturated lipids. A possible correlation is suggested between the lipid droplets and the biologically active substances of a lipid character (vasodepressor lipid, medullin, and prostaglandin) which have been isolated from the renal medulla during recent years.This work was supported by a grant from the Danish State Research Foundation. 相似文献

Allelopathy can be challenging to demonstrate. Developing rigorous analytical techniques to detect and quantify compound(s)
of interest from soil or liquid media lays the foundation for designing ecologically relevant experiments that incorporate
candidate allelochemicals. In this paper, fundamental components of analytical techniques, including method development, validation,
and appropriate controls are discussed. Research on the candidate allelochemical from spotted knapweed, catechin, is used
as an example to demonstrate the importance of including these components both during data collection and in subsequent publications.
This example shows how contrasting results between research groups can be difficult to interpret when information on controls
and method validation are not included in publications. Recent research suggests that catechin is not likely driving spotted
knapweed’s invasion, and thus future research on this system should focus on alternate candidate toxins from spotted knapweed.
By employing appropriate analytical techniques, such as those outlined here, a strong foundation can be laid for ecologically
oriented experiments that examine the role of allelochemicals in structuring communities. 相似文献

Background
In studies evaluating methods for diagnosing tuberculosis (TB), follow-up to verify the presence or absence of active TB is crucial and high dropout rates may significantly affect the validity of the results. In a study assessing the diagnostic performance of the QuantiFERON®-TB Gold In-Tube test in TB suspect children in Tanzania, factors influencing patient adherence to attend follow-up examinations and reasons for not attending were examined.Methods
In 160 children who attended and 102 children who did not attend scheduled 2-month follow-up baseline health characteristics, demographic data and risk factors for not attending follow-up were determined. Qualitative interviews were used to understand patient and caretakers reasons for not returning for scheduled follow-up.Results
Being treated for active TB in the DOTS program (OR: 4.14; 95% CI:1.99–8.62;p-value<0.001) and receiving money for the bus fare (OR:129; 95% CI 16->100;P-value<0.001) were positive predictors for attending follow-up at 2 months, and 21/85(25%) of children not attending scheduled follow-up had died. Interviews revealed that limited financial resources, i.e. lack of money for transportation and poor communication, were related to non-adherence.Conclusion
Patients lost to follow-up is a potential problem for TB research. Receiving money for transportation to the hospital and communication is crucial for adherence to follow-up conducted at a study facility. Strategies to ensure follow-up should be part of any study protocol. 相似文献210.

Differences in expression of the CYP1A1 gene have previously been observed in human breast carcinoma cell lines exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Using an expression vector containing the functional 5'-regulatory region of human CYP1A1 (up to -1140) fused to the reporter gene CAT (for chloramphenicol acetyltransferase), the breast carcinoma cell lines, MCF-7, T47-D and ZR-75-1, classified as highly responsive to TCDD, were highly responsive to TCDD in the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase assay as well. Gel mobility shift assays have shown that these cell lines express a nuclear protein that binds the aryl hydrocarbon (Ah) receptor responsive element. The low or non-responsive cell lines, AL-1, BT-20 and CAMA-1, were low or non-responsive to TCDD in the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase assay, suggesting that the low-responsive phenotype is caused by altered trans-acting factors. However, the mechanism appears to differ among the cell lines. Whereas no induction was observed in AL-1, a fivefold induction in activity was observed in BT-20 and CAMA-1. The TCDD concentration giving half-maximum induction differed greatly between CAMA-1 and BT-20. The gel mobility shift assay showed the presence of a protein that bound specifically to the Ah responsive element in the non-responsive cell line AL-1, as well as the low-responsive cell lines, BT-20 and CAMA-1.
