To determine whether genetic differences in fitness components exist among seeds and seedlings in a natural population, weighed propagules of six parents of Anthoxanthum odoratum from a reciprocal diallel cross were planted into the parental source population, a mown field. Seed families of maternal genotypes differed in germination success, while paternal families showed no detectable differences. Differential germination success could not be attributed to propagule weight. Seed families ranked differently in germination percentage in different blocks. No survivorship differences among parental seed families could be detected. There were significant cross × block × germination and cross × block × survivorship interactions; different crosses performed better or worse in different blocks. In some cases, crosses sired by different fathers within a maternal seed family differed in germination or survivorship, suggesting that natural selection may be capable of discriminating among juvenile genotypes within a maternal family despite the presence of large overall maternal effects. These results indicate that seedling establishment may differ according to genotype and that microsite heterogeneity may maintain genetic variation in juvenile traits in natural plant populations.  相似文献

To investigate the effect of neighbor relatedness in seedling populations, propagules of six Anthoxanthum odoratum parents, produced from a reciprocal diallel cross, were planted into the parental source population, a mown field. The propagules were either surrounded by four unrelated neighbors in a 1 cm square, four sibling neighbors, or no neighbors. About 45% of the emerging seedlings were attacked by aphids (Schizaphis graminum). Aphid infestation significantly reduced seedling survivorship and did not differ with parental genotype or neighbor relatedness; plants without neighbors had a slightly higher infestation risk. Plants without neighbors had lower survivorship than those surrounded by unrelated neighbors although this difference was only significant for plants infested by aphids. When infested by aphids, plants surrounded by siblings had lower survivorship than plants surrounded by non-relatives, suggesting the operation of minority advantage. These results are consistent with the frequency-dependent selection hypothesis for the evolution and maintenance of sexual reproduction.  相似文献

Bramble suspension cultures normally contain Δ5 sterols (sitosterol, campesterol, and isofucosterol). When the cells were grown in a medium supplemented with AY-9944, their content of Δ5 sterols was greatly decreased and Δ8 sterols accumulated. Six Δ8 sterols, including three new compounds, (24R)-24-ethyl-5α-cholest-8-en-3β-ol, stigmasta-8,Z-24(28)-dien-3β-ol, and 4α-methyl-stigmasta-8,Z-24(28)-dien-3β-ol, were identified. AY-9944 probably inhibited the Δ8→Δ7 isomerase. A stable cell line growing permanently in an AY-supplemented medium was obtained.  相似文献

The fluorescence decay spectra and the excitation energy transfer from the phycobiliproteins (PBP) to the chlorophyll-antennae of intact cells of the chlorophyll (Chl) d-dominated cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina were investigated at 298 and 77 K by time- and wavelength-correlated single photon counting fluorescence spectroscopy. At 298 K it was found that (i) the fluorescence dynamics in A. marina is characterized by two emission peaks located at about 650 and 725 nm, (ii) the intensity of the 650 nm fluorescence depends strongly on the excitation wavelength, being high upon excitation of phycobiliprotein (PBP) at 632 nm but virtually absent upon excitation of chlorophyll at 430 nm, (iii) the 650 nm fluorescence band decayed predominantly with a lifetime of 70 +/- 20 ps, (iv) the 725 nm fluorescence, which was observed independent of the excitation wavelength, can be described by a three-exponential decay kinetics with lifetimes depending on the open or the closed state (F(0) or F(m)) of the reaction centre of Photosystem II (PS II). Based on the results of this study, it is inferred that the excitation energy transfer from phycobiliproteins to Chl d of PS II in A. marina occurs with a time constant of about 70 ps, which is about three times faster than the energy transfer from the phycobilisomes to PS II in the Chl a-containing cyanobacterium Synechococcus 6301. A similar fast PBP to Chl d excitation energy transfer was also observed at 77 K. At 77 K a small long-lived fluorescence decay component with a lifetime of 14 ns was observed in the 640-700 nm spectral range. However, it has a rather featureless spectrum, not typical for Chl a, and was only observed upon excitation at 400 nm but not upon excitation at 632 and 654 nm. Thus, this long-lived fluorescence component cannot be used as an indicator that the primary PS II donor of Acaryochloris marina contains Chl a.  相似文献

We present carbon stable isotope, δ13C, results from air and organic matter samples collected during 98 individual field campaigns across a network of Carboeuroflux forest sites in 2001 (14 sites) and 2002 (16 sites). Using these data, we tested the hypothesis that δ13C values derived from large‐scale atmospheric measurements and models, which are routinely used to partition carbon fluxes between land and ocean, and potentially between respiration and photosynthesis on land, are consistent with directly measured ecosystem‐scale δ13C values. In this framework, we also tested the potential of δ13C in canopy air and plant organic matter to record regional‐scale ecophysiological patterns. Our network estimates for the mean δ13C of ecosystem respired CO2 and the related ‘discrimination’ of ecosystem respiration, δer and Δer, respectively, were ?25.6±1.9‰ and 17.8 ±2.0‰ in 2001 and ?26.6±1.5‰ and 19.0±1.6‰ in 2002. The results were in close agreement with δ13C values derived from regional‐scale atmospheric measurement programs for 2001, but less so in 2002, which had an unusual precipitation pattern. This suggests that regional‐scale atmospheric sampling programs generally capture ecosystem δ13C signals over Europe, but may be limited in capturing some of the interannual variations. In 2001, but less so in 2002, there were discernable longitudinal and seasonal trends in δer. From west to east, across the network, there was a general enrichment in 13C (~3‰ and ~1‰ for the 2 years, respectively) consistent with increasing Gorczynski continentality index for warmer and drier conditions. In 2001 only, seasonal 13C enrichment between July and September, followed by depletion in November (from about ?26.0‰ to ?24.5‰ to ?30.0‰), was also observed. In 2001, July and August δer values across the network were significantly related to average daytime vapor pressure deficit (VPD), relative humidity (RH), and, to a lesser degree, air temperature (Ta), but not significantly with monthly average precipitation (Pm). In contrast, in 2002 (a much wetter peak season), δer was significantly related with Ta, but not significantly with VPD and RH. The important role of plant physiological processes on δer in 2001 was emphasized by a relatively rapid turnover (between 1 and 6 days) of assimilated carbon inferred from time‐lag analyses of δer vs. meteorological parameters. However, this was not evident in 2002. These analyses also noted corresponding diurnal cycles of δer and meteorological parameters in 2001, indicating a rapid transmission of daytime meteorology, via physiological responses, to the δer signal during this season. Organic matter δ13C results showed progressive 13C enrichment from leaves, through stems and roots to soil organic matter, which may be explained by 13C fractionation during respiration. This enrichment was species dependent and was prominent in angiosperms but not in gymnosperms. δ13C values of organic matter of any of the plant components did not well represent short‐term δer values during the seasonal cycle, and could not be used to partition ecosystem respiration into autotrophic and heterotrophic components.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity is recognized as an important mechanism of adaptation. However, because of its potential costs and limits, it has been hypothesized to be reduced and ultimately become lost when there is no selection for its maintenance. Heterogeneous environments in particular are expected to favour and thus maintain plastic phenotypes. Lakes and rivers differ in their flow regimes. In addition to higher average water velocity, rivers are characterized by distinct spatial and temporal variation in water flow, whereas lakes can be regarded as quite uniform in this respect. We studied whether behaviour, which is generally considered to be highly plastic, shows differences in the degree of plasticity between lake and river populations of the European grayling, Thymallus thymallus, fry in response to different water velocities. Given that aggressive behaviour in fish has been shown to relate to ambient flow regime, we compared aggressiveness of hatchery‐reared grayling originating from hatchery stocks of two lake and two river populations in still and flowing water. River fish showed higher aggressiveness in flowing water compared with still water, whereas aggressiveness of lake fish did not appear to vary according to water velocity. The higher plasticity of aggressiveness evoked in river fish by different water velocities may thus represent an adaptation to more variable flow and presumably related feeding conditions in their natural environment.  相似文献

Two conflicting hypotheses for chromosome replication in the Volvocaceae, one postulating multiple rounds of replication prior to cell division (endoreduplication) and the other claiming a canonical sequence of one round of nuclear DNA replication preceding each cell division, have been tested experimentally. Competitive PCR of the single-copy actin gene (target) of Volvox carteri f. nagariensis Iyengar and a shortened gene version (competitor) containing the same primer binding sites were used to assess the genome equivalents present in a given number of cells. Determining the molar ratio of the PCR products generated from target DNA (extracted from a known number of cells) and defined numbers of competitor molecules revealed that Volvox embryos between the one- and 16-cell stages possess an average of between one and two—but never more than two—copies of the actin gene. This led us to conclude that the number of genome equivalents per nucleus in dividing Volvox embryos varies only between one and two and that, unlike the case predicted by endoreduplication, the nuclear genome undergoes only one round of replication prior to each cell division.  相似文献
