ABSTRACT

An array of four microphones was set up in two rain forest locations in Costa Rica, and 12–14 hours of sound were recorded over a 24-hour period at each location. Using this acoustical location system, the distribution of animal signaling in time, space and frequency could be assessed. This study demonstrates the feasibility of localizing some animals acoustically even under difficult field conditions in a highly reverberant and noisy environment. Primates seem to be particularly easy to track using this method, while birds seem more problematical. We also advocate the use of long-term indiscriminate acoustical sampling of all vocalizers, in order to give information about the synecology of animal communication. Long-term spectral analysis and data reduction by Principal Components Analysis provide tools for comparing acoustical samples over time and space.  相似文献

For one experiment 45 early-weaned lambs were given one of the following five diets from weaning to slaughter: (1) whole barley with urea, minerals and vitamins added as a concentrated solution; (2) as diet (1) plus 4 g/kg of sodium sulphate in solution; (3) as diet (2) plus 1.2 g of methionine-hydroxyanalogue (MHA)/kg; (4) as diet (2) plus 2.5 ml of 40% formaldehyde added per kg; (5) a control diet containing whole barley and 100 g/kg of a pelleted supplement based on fish meal. Growth rates (g/d) for the five treatments were 218, 253, 253, 256 and 292. Addition of sulphate significantly increased growth rate and food utilization while MHA had no effect; formalin treatment reduced digestibility and food utilization.In a second experiment 58 lambs were used to study the effect of protein supplements for lambs weaned at various ages and weights. Diets similar to (2) and (5) from Expt. 1 were used, while an intermediate diet (6) was made from an equal mixture of diets (2) and (5). As weaning age increased and as live weight at weaning increased, the difference in growth rate and food utilization between lambs receiving diet (2) and those receiving diets (5) and (6) decreased.It is suggested that for most sheep production systems in which concentrates are used either as the sole feed or as supplements, simple fortification of whole grain with the necessary nutrients is all that is required to achieve optimum results.  相似文献

We investigated fluctuating asymmetry in 13 traits of the skulls and jaws of historical and contemporary populations of Scandinavian gray wolves (Canis lupus). We hypothesized that there is a higher level of fluctuating asymmetry in the inbred contemporary population than in the historical population. Our analyses did not detect any difference in the level of fluctuating asymmetry as predicted. We propose different explanation for this lack of change in fluctuating asymmetry. It is assumed that a large number of studies have failed to find a positive correlation between the level of genetic stress and developmental instability and have therefore never been published, which hampers a good understanding of fluctuating asymmetry as an indicator of developmental instability. The current study is thus important in this context. The gray wolf population in Scandinavia is characterized by an extreme bottleneck followed by two and a half decades of strong inbreeding, but no associated change in fluctuating asymmetry is detected.  相似文献

Changes in habitat stability may significantly shape evolutionary patterns and processes in ancient lakes. In the present study, we use a hierarchical combination of molecular phylogenetic and coalescent approaches to investigate the evolutionary history of the endemic species of the gastropod genus Bellamya in the African rift‐lake Malawi. By integrating our findings with reported palaeontological and palaeolimnological data, we demonstrate that all but one evolutionary lineage of the Pliocene Bellamya fauna in Lake Malawi became extinct. Coalescent analyses indicate that the modern radiation underwent both a sudden demographic and a spatial expansion after a genetic bottleneck. We argue that a reflooding of the lake after severe Pleistocene low stands offers a straightforward explanation for this pattern and may have triggered speciation processes in the modern endemic Bellamya radiation in Lake Malawi. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 130–143.  相似文献
