Water striders (Hemiptera, Gerromorpha) are a very distinct ecological group specially adapted for life on the water surface.
The present paper reports on four species of Gerromorpha from the Middle Eocene fossil sites of Eckfeld and Messel describingLutetiabates eckfeldensis n. gen. et n. sp.,Cylindrobates messelensis n. gen. et n. sp. (both Gerridae), and two nymphs most probably of the genusGerris. The record of two new members of Gerridae from the Paleogene as well as the hitherto known Gerromorpha from fossiliferous
resins document a distinctly higher diversity of water striders within die European Paleogene than today. Lastly, comments

Background
Neuropathic pain must be correctly diagnosed for optimal treatment. The questionnaire named Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI) was developed in its original French version to evaluate the different symptoms of neuropathic pain. We hypothesized that the NPSI might also be used to differentiate neuropathic from non-neuropathic pain.Methods
We translated the NPSI into German using a standard forward-backward translation and administered it in a case-control design to patients with neuropathic (n = 68) and non-neuropathic pain (headache and osteoarthritis, n = 169) to validate it and to analyze its discriminant properties, its sensitivity to change, and to detect neuropathic pain subgroups with distinct profiles.Results
Using a sum score (the NPSI-G score), we found sensitivity to change (r between 0.37 and 0.5 for pain items of the graded chronic pain scale) and could distinguish between neuropathic and other pain on a group basis, but not for individual patients. Post hoc development of a discriminant score with optimized diagnostic properties to distinguish neuropathic pain from non-neuropathic pain resulted in an instrument with high sensitivity (91%) and acceptable specificity (70%). We detected six different pain profiles in the patient group with neuropathic pain; three profiles were found to be distinct.Conclusions
The NPSI-G potentially combines the properties of a diagnostic tool and an instrument to identify subtypes of neuropathic pain. 相似文献73.

The intracellular movement, following uptake of 125I-labelled denatured serum albumin into nonparenchymal liver cells, was followed by means of subcellular fractionation. Isolated nonparenchymal rat liver cells were prepared by means of differential centrifugation. The cells were homogenized in a sonifier and the cytoplasmic extract subjected to isopycnic centrifugation in a sucrose gradient. The intracellular movement of the labelled albumin was followed by comparing the distribution profile of radioactivity in the sucrose gradient with those of marker enzymes for plasma membrane and lysosomes. The distribution profiles for radioactivity after the cells had been exposed to the labelled denatured albumin for different time periods indicated that the radioactivity was first associated with subcellular fractions of lower modal densities than the lysosomes. With time of incubation the radioactivity moved towards higher densities. After prolonged incubations in the absence of extracellular labelled denatured albumin the radioactivity peak coincided with that of the lysosomal marker β-acetylglucosaminidase. When the cells were treated with the lysosomal inhibitor leupeptin, degradation of the labelled albumin was decreased, resulting in a massive intracellular accumulation of radioactivity. The radioactivity peak coincided with the peak of activity for the lysosomal marker β-acetylglucosaminidase, suggesting lysosomal degradation. 相似文献

Disintegration of blue fox sperm membranes is studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In unfrozen spermatozoa studied by SEM, the plasmalemma and the acrosome appeared to be intact, except for a few cases of disruption of the former structure at the anterior part of the head. In semen frozen in 0.5-ml plastic straws by use of N2 vapor after dilution with Tris-fructose-citric acid with 8 vol % glycerol and 20 vol % egg yolk and thawed at 70 degrees C for 8 sec, the spermatozoa displayed different degrees of membrane damage. These alterations could be classified into three main categories of which the first included only minor changes in the plasmalemma, but vesiculation and disintegration of the outer part of the acrosomal membrane. In the second category (also the most frequent one) the outer part of the acrosomal membrane was extensively vesiculated, and the plasmalemma was discharged proximal to the equatorial segment. Extensive loss of plasmalemma and complete absence of the outer part of the acrosomal membrane characterized the last category of membrane damage. Summary The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the prevalence of atopic sensitization to chironomids (CHI) in patients with asthma and/or rhinitis (A/R), and to study concomitant sensitization to CHI and other allergens. Skin prick tests were performed with 3 different CHI extracts as well as with common inhalant allergens in 600 consecutive patients, 495 of which had A/R. Allergen specific IgE antibodies in the sera against CHI, shell fish and cockroaches were analyzed with Magic Lite.59 (12%) of the patients with A/R had a positive skin test with CHI. Positive skin tests with house dust mites and a storage mite were more common in CHI allergic patients than in other atopic patients. Nasal or conjunctival provocation tests, performed on 23 of the patients with positive skin test with CHI, were clearly positive in 7 cases (30%), questionable in 8 (35%) and negative in 8 cases (35%).Magic Lite, performed on sera from 50 of the patients with positive skin test against CHI, was positive with CHI in 39 cases (78%), with crayfish in 33 (66%), shrimp 20 (40%), cockroach 21 (40%) and with crab in 3 cases (6%).It is concluded that sensitization against CHI is common in patients with A/R. The clinical relevance of the positive test results is, however, unknown. Concomitant sensitization with CHI, crustaceans and cockroach is common. 相似文献

The three-dimensional structure of the native "putative prismane" protein from Desulfovibrio vulgaris (Hildenborough) has been solved by X-ray crystallography to a resolution of 1.72?Å. The molecule does not contain a [6Fe-6S] prismane cluster, but rather two 4Fe clusters some 12?Å apart and situated close to the interfaces formed by the three domains of the protein. Cluster 1 is a conventional [4Fe-4S] cubane bound, however, near the N-terminus by an unusual, sequential arrangement of four cysteine residues (Cys 3, 6, 15, 21). Cluster 2 is a novel 4Fe structure with two μ2-sulfido bridges, two μ2-oxo bridges, and a partially occupied, unidentified μ2 bridge X. The protein ligands of cluster 2 are widely scattered through the second half of the sequence and include three cysteine residues (Cys 312, 434, 459), one persulfido-cysteine (Cys 406), two glutamates (Glu 268, 494), and one histidine (His 244). With this unusual mixture of bridging and external type of ligands, cluster 2 is named the "hybrid" cluster, and its asymmetric, open structure suggests that it could be the site of a catalytic activity. X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Fe K-edge is readily interpretable in terms of the crystallographic model when allowance is made for volume contraction at 10?K; no Fe··Fe distances beyond 3.1?Å could be identified. EPR, Mössbauer and MCD spectroscopy have been used to define the oxidation states and the magnetism of the clusters in relation to the crystallographic structure. Reduced cluster 1 is a [4Fe-4S]1+ cubane with S?=?3/2; it is the first biological example of a "spin-admixed" iron-sulfur cluster. The hybrid cluster 2 has four oxidation states from (formally) all FeIII to three FeII plus one FeIII. The four iron ions are exchange coupled resulting in the system spins S?=?0, 9/2, 0 (and 4), 1/2, respectively, for the four redox states. Resonance Raman spectroscopy suggests that the bridging ligand X which could not be identified unambiguously in the crystal structure is a solvent-exchangeable oxygen. 相似文献
