Microalgal biomass as feedstock for biofuel production is an attracting alternative to terrestrial plant utilization for biofuels production. However, today the microalgal cultivation systems for energy production purposes seem not yet to be economically feasible. Microalgae, though cultivated under stress conditions, such as nutrient starvation, high salinity, high temperature etc. accumulate considerable amounts (up to 60–65% of dry weight) of lipids or carbohydrates along with several secondary metabolites. Especially some of the latter are valuable compounds with an enormous range of industrial applications. The simultaneous production of lipids or carbohydrates for biofuel production and of secondary metabolites in a biorefinery concept might allow the microalgal production to be economically feasible. This paper aims to provide a review on the available literature about the cultivation of microalgae for the accumulation of high-value compounds along with lipids or carbohydrates focusing on stress cultivation conditions.  相似文献

Background. The intention of this study is to analyse the correlation between a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the most common preoperative comorbidity and cardiac variables in patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery. This VAS is simple, easy to register and can be used as a global measurement of quality of life (QOL). Methods. Preoperative assessment of QOL in 1351 patients, 979 men and 372 women, with a mean age of 64.5±10.5 (18-88), undergoing elective cardiac surgery between January 2003 and December 2005. QOL was measured by the EuroQol questionnaire. Results. The mean VAS was 58.7±20.9, range 3 to 100. Univariate analysis showed a difference for sex (p=0.000), and NYHA (p=0.009) between patients with an isolated CABG and those with a combined revascularisation (p=0.05). Stepwise logistic regression analysis identified female gender (p=0.00), NYHA (p=0.00) and valve disease (p=0.03) as independent variables for a low QOL. The correlation between NYHA and QOL was low (r=-0.09, p=0.003). Conclusion. The clinical consequence is that using this simple VAS we can identify patients with a good QOL. If these patients present for high-risk surgery, with a better quality of life as primary indication, more extended counselling regarding their QOL is recommended. Nicotine is a psychoactive ingredient in tobacco that significantly contributes to the harmful tobacco smoking habit. Nicotine dependence is more prevalent than dependence on any other substance. Preclinical research in animal models of the various aspects of nicotine dependence suggests a critical role of glutamate, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), cholinergic and dopamine neurotransmitter interactions in the ventral tegmental area and possibly other brain sites, such as the central nucleus of the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex, in the effects of nicotine. Specifically, decreasing glutamate transmission or increasing GABA transmission with pharmacological manipulations decreased the rewarding effects of nicotine and cue-induced reinstatement of nicotine seeking. Furthermore, early nicotine withdrawal is characterized by decreased function of presynaptic inhibitory metabotropic glutamate 2/3 receptors and increased expression of postsynaptic glutamate receptor subunits in limbic and frontal brain sites, while protracted abstinence may be associated with increased glutamate response to stimuli associated with nicotine administration. Finally, adaptations in nicotinic acetylcholine receptor function are also involved in nicotine dependence. These neuroadaptations probably develop to counteract the decreased glutamate and cholinergic transmission that is hypothesized to characterize early nicotine withdrawal. In conclusion, glutamate, GABA and cholinergic transmission in limbic and frontal brain sites are critically involved in nicotine dependence.  相似文献

Carbohydrates are a desirable biomass compound for the generation of several biofuels. Phosphorus nutrient limitation causes a significant increase in the carbohydrate content of the cyanobacterium Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis. Carbohydrates accumulated up to a content of 63.09?±?3.43?% (±SD) in both batch and semi-continuous cultures. In order the production of carbohydrate-rich biomass through nutrient limitation to be maximized, it is suggested that the limited nutrients have to be supplied in amounts that they on one hand can support the biomass production while on the other hand they alter the composition of the biomass. In this study, phosphorus of 1.82?±?0.16?mg g?1 of dry biomass was the optimized amount for the maximization of carbohydrates production by A. platensis. Regarding the need to decrease the application amounts of nutrients for biomass production, this study demonstrates that the phosphorus supply could be decreased an order of magnitude with no significant decrease in biomass production. In addition, it was observed that biomass rich in carbohydrates bio-flocculates, during settling without the addition of any flocculation agent or any other intervention. The bio-flocculation efficiency appears to be related with the carbohydrate content of the biomass. In maximum carbohydrate content (60?%), the biomass bio-flocculated at 68.49?±?7.73?% the first 15?min and reached 80.25?±?5.58?% 60?min after settling. The produced carbohydrates might be used as feedstock for biofuel generation, while the bio-flocculation and the overall settling characteristics of the carbohydrate-rich biomass could make its harvesting process much easier.  相似文献

Microalgal biomass seems to be a promising feedstock for biofuel generation. Microalgae have relative high photosynthetic efficiencies, high growth rates, and some species can thrive in brackish water or seawater and wastewater from the food- and agro-industrial sector. Today, the main interest in research is the cultivation of microalgae for lipids production to generate biodiesel. However, there are several other biological or thermochemical conversion technologies, in which microalgal biomass could be used as substrate. However, the high protein content or the low carbohydrate content of the majority of the microalgal species might be a constraint for their possible use in these technologies. Moreover, in the majority of biomass conversion technologies, carbohydrates are the main substrate for production of biofuels. Nevertheless, microalgae biomass composition could be manipulated by several cultivation techniques, such as nutrient starvation or other stressed environmental conditions, which cause the microalgae to accumulate carbohydrates. This paper attempts to give a general overview of techniques that can be used for increasing the microalgal biomass carbohydrate content. In addition, biomass conversion technologies, related to the conversion of carbohydrates into biofuels are discussed.  相似文献

In a 36-h shaken submerged culture ofAspergillus niger M1, maltose supported growth substantially more than either sucrose, glucose or fructose. If the culture was kept static for 6–36 h, the differences gradually disappeared. Lactose does not serve as growth substrate.  相似文献
