Structural and functional homology between the 29 kD rat liver nucleoprotein and the high mobility group 1 protein

A 29 kD soluble rat liver nucleoprotein (p29) has increased binding affinity for the hormone responsive element (RE) of the rat haptoglobin (Hp) gene during the acute-phase reaction. In this work the possibility of its structural and functional homology to the high mobility group 1 (HMG1) nonhistone protein constituent of chromatin was examined. The results of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, Southwestern and Western immunoblot analyses, showed that p29 and HMG1 are homologous protein species. On the basis of in vitro and in vivo phosphorylation/dephosphorylation experiments, we discuss the modulatory role of phosphate groups in view of the structure and function of p29.     

Letters to the metanarrative: Totalitarian “enjoyment” and self representation in postcommunist Serbia

Conclusion This outline of the instrumentality of the technology/technique of representation in postcommunist Serbia is but a brief attempt to address the modes of production of identity in postmodernism, its legitimation in/of dominant discourse, and their embedding in common sense language and practice. Postcommunist Serbia is obviously a special situation:²³ a particular case of the social appropriation and construction of enjoyment and desire, intimately related to the desires and various enjoyments of the members of the community, precarious in its collective affirmation. Based on the idea of contingent collectivity, faction-fiction, in its meta-critique seems to signal the emergence of a new régime in the relation between historical reality and its representation in historical narratives.This new régime, obviously, cannot be exhaustively (or even extensively) discussed in a brief paper like this one. Nevertheless, some (three) points of departure for the general discussion of postmodern modes of representation are still possible. One such point of departure is the contingence of representation, another the apparent paradigmatic similarity between trash talk-shows and Echoes and Reactions. Quality Assessment of Bee Pollen-Honey Mixtures Using Thin-Layer Chromatography in Combination with Chemometrics

The aim of this study is to develop a rapid, effect-directed screening method for quality assessment of bee pollen-honey mixtures. The comparative antioxidant potential and phenolic content of honey, bee pollen, and the bee pollen-honey mixtures, was performed using spectrophotometry. The total phenolic content and antioxidative activity of bee pollen-honey mixtures with 20 % bee pollen share were in the range 3.03–3.11 mg GAE/g, and 6.02–6.96 mmol TE/kg, respectively, while mixtures with 30 % bee pollen share contained 3.92–4.18 mg GAE/g, and 9.69–10.11 mmol TE/kg. Chromatographic fingerprint of bee pollen-honey mixtures was performed by high-performance thin-layer chromatography with conditions developed by authors and reported for the first time. Fingerprint analysis hyphenated with chemometrics enabled authenticity assessments of honey in mixtures. Results indicate that bee pollen-honey mixtures represent a food with highly, both, nutritious characteristics and health-promoting effect.     

Regeneration of Picea omorika plants via organogenesis

Picea omorika plants were regenerated from embryo and seedling shoot tip cultures. Adventitious and axillary shoots were produced on 1/2 MS medium containing benzyladenine and kinetin. Benzyladenine was more effective in bud induction, whereas kinetin hastened shoot development. Genetic transformation of alfalfa somatic embryos and their clonal propagation through repetitive somatic embryogenesis

Genetically transformed alfalfa (Medicago sativa L., cv. Zajearska 83) plantlets were obtained by inoculating somatic embryos with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains A281/pGA472 and LBA4404/pBI121. Single somatic embryos, 5–7 mm long, were released from a repetitively embryogenic culture, wounded, and cocultivated with the bacteria. The agar-solidified culture medium contained mineral salts, vitamins, 40 g l^–1 sucrose, 1 g l^–1 yeast extract and 0.05 mg l^–1 BA. Five clones, transformed with A281/pGA472, and 4 clones transformed with LBA4404/pBI121, were selected for proliferation by repetitive somatic embryogenesis, on media containing 100 mg l^–1 of kanamycin. The transformation of kanamycin-resistant clones was confirmed by assaying the activity of neomycin phosphotransferase II and/or -glucuronidase enzymes, and by the Southern blot analysis. It is suggested that the transformation/regeneration system based on somatic embryogenesis may be suitable for establishing transgenic alfalfa lines. Ultrastructural and morphometric aspects of the juxtaglomerular apparatus in the monkey kidney

Summary The authors describe the ultrastructure of the juxtaglomerular apparatus in five adult male Cebus apella monkeys and communicate morphometric data of the macula densa.In comparison with several species of rodents examined before, the macula cells of the monkey contain many more mitochondria and possess a particularly thick basal membrane. The relative volume of the nuclei is slightly smaller than in rodents.The Goormaghtigh cells of the monkey resemble those of the other animals investigated.The epithelioid (or juxtaglomerular) cells do not contain secretory granules. This observation reminds one of the behavior of the epithelioid cells of guinea pigs.Dedicated to Professor Dr. med. G.
