The side effects of sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicides on plant-associated bacteria were investigated under pure culture conditions. Eighteen isolates, belonging to the genera Azotobacter, Azospirillum, Bacillus, Enterobacter Pseudomonas and Serratia, were exposed to four active compounds at concentration ranges similar to those in field soil. The sulfonylureas chlorsulfuron and rimsulfuron inhibited the growth of one of two Azospirillum and one of four Pseudomonas strains, while the imidazolinones imazapyr and imazethapyr were effective on two out of five Bacillus isolates. Surfactants in commercial formulation significantly enhanced rimsulfuron toxicity. With the exception of one Azospirillum strain, the differential tolerance of rhizobacteria to these herbicides was related to a differential sensitivity of their target, the activity of the first enzyme in branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis, acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS).Greenhouse pot studies were performed to assess the occurrence of inhibitory effects on bacterial growth in field conditions. Maize seedlings were bacterized with the two strains which had shown in vitro sensitivity to sulfonylureas. Following the application to the soil of a commercial formulation of rimsulfuron at rates of 0, 0.2 and 0.5 mol a.i. kg–1, significative differences in the resulting degree of bacterial root colonization were found. Moreover, upon co-inoculation with two strains, one tolerant and one sensitive to the herbicide, the presence of rimsulfuron significantly enhanced root occupancy by resistant bacteria, suggesting that shifts in the microbial community structure of crop rhizosphere could indeed result as a consequence of weed control by AHAS inhibitors.Abbreviations AHAS acetohydroxyacid synthase - CETAB cetyltrimethylammonium bromide - ID50 concentration causing 50% inhibition of enzyme activity - LD50 concentration causing 50% decrease of growth constant value  相似文献

A gene (Chl) encoding a novel type of chitinase was isolated from Beta vulgaris. The Ch1 protein consists of an N-terminal hydrophobic prepeptide of 25 amino acids followed by a hevein-like domain of 22 amino acid residues, an unusually long proline-rich domain of 131 amino acid residues with 90 prolines, and finally a catalytic domain of 261 amino acid residues. Proteins with similar proline-rich domains are present in some other plants. The Chl gene shows a transient expression in response to fungal infection.  相似文献

Shoots of Miscanthus X ogiformis Honda Giganteus transferred from medium with benzyladenine (BA) to thidiazuron (TDZ) formed significantly more axillary shoots than shoots grown continuously on either medium, or transferred from TDZ to BA. Shoot formation on axillary shoots transferred from BA-containing media to media with kinetin or isopentenyladenine (2iP) or transferred from media with TDZ, kinetin or 2iP to media with BA, corresponded to the number of shoots formed in the previous subculture. Shoot formation on shoots transferred from medium containing BA to media containing combinations of BA and/or TDZ increased with increasing concentrations of TDZ in the first subculture, whereas shoot formation in the second and third subculture depended on the BA concentration. When shoots were transferred from media with BA to media with TDZ, the time for shoot formation, as well as shoot size, indicate that the combined effect of BA and TDZ is expressed only during the early phase of the subculture. OBJECTIVES: To study reproductive pattern and perinatal mortality in rural Tamil Nadu, South India. DESIGN: Community based, cross sectional questionnaire study of 30 randomly selected areas served by health subcentres. SETTING: Rural parts of Salem District, Tamil Nadu, South India. SUBJECTS: 1321 women and their offspring delivered in the 6 months before the interview. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Number of pregnancies, pregnancy outcome, spacing of pregnancies, sex of offspring, perinatal and neonatal mortality rates. RESULTS: 41% of the women (535) were primiparous; 7 women (0.5%) were grand multiparous (> 6 births). The women had a mean age of 22 years and a mean of 2.3 pregnancies and 1.8 live children. The sex ratio at birth of the index children was 107 boys per 100 girls. The stillbirth rate was 13.5/1000 births, the neonatal mortality rate was 35.3/1000, and the perinatal mortality rate was 42.0/1000. Girls had an excess neonatal mortality (rate ratio 3.42%; 95% confidence interval 1.68 to 6.98; this was most pronounced among girls born to multiparous women with no living sons (rate ratio 15.48 (2.04 to 177.73) v 1.87 (0.63 to 5.58) in multiparous women with at least one son alive). CONCLUSIONS: In this rural part of Tamil Nadu, women had a controlled reproductive pattern. The excess neonatal mortality among girls constitutes about one third of the perinatal mortality rate. It seems to be linked to a preference for sons and should therefore be addressed through a holistic societal approach rather than through specific healthcare measures.  相似文献

The optimal conditions were established for extraction of paralytic shellfish toxins from a Danish clone of Alexandrium tamarense using extraction with acetic acid and HCl in the concentration range 0.01–1.0 N. Physical destruction of the cells was investigated microscopically to select the most efficient extraction procedure.The toxin content was quantitated by an automized isocratic reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The best results as judged from the total amount of toxins and the toxin profile were obtained using 0.05–1.0 N acetic acid and 0.01–0.02 N HCl. Hydrochloric acid in the concentration range 0.03–1.0 N caused the amount of C1 and C2 toxins to decrease sharply and concomitant increase of gonyautoxins 2 and 3.The phytoplankton extracts with 0.1 to 0.5 N acetic acid or 0.01 N HCl were stable during 6 months at –20 °C, but the extracts with HCl 0.02 N underwent a change in toxin profile, although the total amount of toxins was constant.  相似文献

A linkage map of the porcine genome has been developed by segregation analysis of 239 genetic markers. Eighty-one of these markers correspond to known genes. Linkage groups have been assigned to all 18 autosomes plus the X Chromosome (Chr). As 69 of the markers on the linkage map have also been mapped physically (by others), there is significant integration of linkage and physical map data. Six informative markers failed to show linkage to these maps. As in other species, the genetic map of the heterogametic sex (male) was significantly shorter (16.5 Morgans) than the genetic map of the homogametic sex (female) (21.5 Morgans). The sex-averaged genetic map of the pig was estimated to be 18 Morgans in length. Mapping information for 61 Type I loci (genes) enhances the contribution of the pig gene map to comparative gene mapping. Because the linkage map incorporates both highly polymorphic Type II loci, predominantly microsatellites, and Type I loci, it will be useful both for large experiments to map quantitative trait loci and for the subsequent isolation of trait genes following a comparative and candidate gene approach.  相似文献

An account is given of the morphology and the taxonomy of the Asian, Australian and Pacific genus Archidendron (Leguminosae – Mimosoideae). A new infrageneric classification based on morphological data is presented, the genus being subdivided in 8 series. The phylogeny of the genus is discussed, the base of discussion being all available morphological, palynological and wood–anatomical characters. The presence/absence of stipules, the length of the staminal tube compared with that of the corolla–tube, the sessile/stipitate ovary(–ies), the morphology of the pods and the wood–anatomy have been particularly useful in determining the evolutionary trends within the genus. Analyses of the geographical range of selected character states are presented. The data suggest a Central – W. Malesian origin of the genus. The series endemic to the E. Malesian – Australian area have probably evolved more recently. The pluricarpellate condition of the flowers in several species endemic to the E. Malesian and Australian area is considered to be a derived character state. The following new taxa are proposed: Ser. Calycinae Nielsen, ser. Ptenopae Nielsen, ser. Bellae Nielsen, Archidendron falcatum Nielsen, A. cockburnii Nielsen, A. sabahense Nielsen, A. fagifolium (Bl. ex Miq.) Nielsen var. borneense Nielsen, A. kunsrteri (Prain) Nielsen subsp. ashtonii Nielsen, A. ellipticum (Bl.) Nielsen subsp. cordifoliolatum Nielsen. New combinations are proposed in the Malesian species formerly referred to Abarema, Zygia and Morolobium by Kostermans. Keys to and an enumeration of the species are presented.  相似文献

Summary A cultivar lacking the glycinin subunit A5A4B3 (Raiden) was crossed with one lacking the -subunit of -conglycinin (Keburi). Analysis of F2 and F3 progeny indicated that the missing bands of the A5A4B3 and the -subunit were each controlled by a recessive allele of two independently segregating genes. Gene symbols Gy 4/gy 4 and Cgy 1/cgy 1 were proposed for the genes which confer the presence or absence of the glycinin and conglycinin subunits, respectively.Cooperative research of USDA-ARS and the Indiana Agric. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) in the pig pancreas is localized to nerves, many of which travel along the pancreatic ducts. VIP stimulates pancreatic fluid and bicarbonate secretion like secretin. Electrical vagal stimulation in the pig causes an atropine-resistant profuse secretion of bicarbonate-rich pancreatic juice. In an isolated perfused preparation of the pig pancreas with intact vagal nerve supply, electrical vagal stimulation caused an atropine-resistant release of VIP, which accurately parallelled the exocrine secretion of juice and bicarbonate. Perfusion of the pancreas with a potent VIP-antiserum inhibited the effect of vagal stimulation on the exocrine secretion. It is concluded, that VIP is responsible for (at least part of) the neurally controlled fluid and bicarbonate secretion from the pig pancreas.  相似文献
