An association between a lymphocyte antigen in sheep and the response to vaccination against the parasite Trichostrongylus colubriformis

Lymphocyte antigens were tested in sheep which had been selected for responsiveness to vaccination against the intestinal nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis. These sheep had been bred in an assortative mating programme which produced offspring designated as either “high responders” or “low responders”, with highly heritable resistance or susceptibility.Ovine lymphocyte antigen (OLA) typing antisera were obtained from parous ewes in the course of matings which produced the high and low responder flocks. A particular antigen (SY1) was found to be present in high frequency on the lymphocytes of high responder (72·2%) and in lower frequency (21·9%) on the lymphocytes of low responder rams. In ewes, the frequency for high responders was 65·7% and for low responders it was 33·5%. A similar association between the SY1 antigen and low faecal egg count was found in random-bred sheep which had been vaccinated with irradiated larvae and challenged with normal larvae. The conclusion was drawn that this lymphocyte antigen was likely to be part of the sheep major histocompatibility complex which influenced the immune response of sheep to vaccination against the parasite.     

Advanced carcinoma of the prostate: treatment with a gonadotrophin releasing hormone agonist.

Ten patients with advanced progressive adenocarcinoma of the prostate were treated with a long acting analogue of gonadotrophin releasing hormone. Eight of these patients responded to treatment in terms of pain relief and clinical regression of tumour. Serum gonadotrophin and testosterone concentrations were significantly suppressed by the end of the second week of treatment, testosterone concentrations being comparable with those achieved by castration. The two patients who failed to respond had both relapsed previously when receiving conventional treatment, and neither showed any endocrine response to the analogue. Superagonists of gonadotrophin releasing hormone may be the treatment of choice in adenocarcinoma of the prostate, but further trials are required to establish long term safety and efficacy.     

The Plastids and Pigments of Fresh and Dried Chinese Gooseberries (Actinidia chinensis)

The pericarp of Chinese gooseberries is green due to the presenceof low concentrations of chlorophylls. On a f. wt basis thereis about 1.5 times more tetrapyrollic pigments (chlorophyllsand related compounds) in the outer pericarp than in the innerpericarp, whereas the carotenoid pigment values only showed1.25 times more in the outer than in the inner part of the fruit.The drying of Chinese gooseberries at 40 °C for 40 h resultedin the loss of at least half the tetrapyrollic pigments andof carotenoids. Chlorophylls a and b were converted to chlorophyllides,pheophytins and pheophorbides. Chloroplasts in the outer pericarp are clustered closely aroundthe nucleus and have a well-defined grana and inter-granal membranesystem. In the inner pericarp the chloroplasts are again clusteredaround the nucleus and there is a proliferation of inter-granalmembranes. In dried tissue the limiting membrane of chloroplastswas completely dispersed whereas some of the internal membranesremained intact. Delivery of Functionality in Complex Food Systems: Physically Inspired Approaches from Nanoscale to Microscale,Wageningen 18–21 October 2009

The Wageningen Delivery of Functionality symposium covered all aspects involved with food structural design to arrive at high-quality foods which meet demanding customer expectations and regulatory requirements. The symposium integrated aspects from the structural organization of foods at molecular and supramolecular scales to dedicated techniques required to describe and visualize such structures, the gastro-intestinal events and how to model these in a laboratory setting, and finally the impact those food structures and ingredients have on the consumer’s physiology and on the human perception. As an interdisciplinary platform, bringing together more than 160 researchers from academia and industry, the symposium meanwhile fulfills an important role in the food science community.     

Excitation of a magnetospheric MHD cavity by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is investigated analytically by using a one-dimensional nonuniform model of the Earth’s magnetosphere and the adjacent solar wind region. Its properties are shown to be essentially governed by the presence of an MHD cavity that arises in the magnetosphere because of the non-uniformity of the latter and also because of the jump in the parameters of the medium at the magnetopause (the outer boundary of the magnetosphere). System oscillations constitute a discrete spectrum of eigenmodes, which are determined by the wave vector k _t along the tangential discontinuity and also by the mode number n = 0, 1, 2, …, playing the role of the wavenumber along a coordinate normal to the magnetopause. Analytic expressions are obtained for the frequency and instability growth rate of each eigenmode and for the functions describing its spatial structure. All these quantities depend parametrically on the solar wind velocity V _W , or more precisely, on the Doppler frequency shift ω _W = k _t · V _W . For each eigenmode, there is a lower instability threshold depending on the parameter ω _W and a sharp maximum in the growth rate at the eigenfrequency of the magnetospheric cavity. For ω _W values below the threshold, the properties of an eigenmode are highly sensitive to the type of solar wind nonuniformity. Three cases are considered: a uniform solar wind and solar winds in which the speed of sound increases or decreases away from the magnetopause.     

Within-species correlations in leaf traits of three boreal plant species along a latitudinal gradient

Evergreen boreal plant species express high variability in their leaf traits. It remains controversial whether this within-species variability is constrained to the same leaf trait relationships as has been observed across species. We sampled leaves of three boreal evergreen woody species along a latitudinal gradient (from 57o56′N to 69o55′N). Leaf longevity (LL) of Pinus sylvestris L. and Vaccinium vitis-idaea L. correlated negatively with mean annual air temperature (MAT), whereas the LL of Ledum palustre L. was not affected by MAT. V. vitis-idaea and L. palustre had a negative relationship between leaf mass per area (LMA) and MAT. In P. sylvestris, the LMA–MAT relationship was positive. A negative correlation between LL and LMA was significant only for P. sylvestris. Leaf nitrogen concentration was positively related to leaf phosphorus concentration in all three species. Leaf potassium concentration was related to nitrogen concentration only in L. palustre, and to phosphorus concentration in P. sylvestris and L. palustre. Our results demonstrate that although within the studied species the variation in some of the leaf traits may have the same degree as interspecific variation, there is no such intercorrelation of leaf traits within the studied species as has been observed across species.     

Comparative incidence of reticuloendothelial tumors in C57BL mice after exposure to tritiated water

A total of 2,377 C 57 Bl/6M mice were assigned to control groups and experimental groups exposed to tritiated water administered as a pulse injection or in drinking water, at a dose of 1.0 microCi per injection or per ml of drinking water. Weanlings were observed for the duration of life span. Data analysis was based on two coefficient estimates (1) individual carcinogenic induction coefficient and (2) specific tumorigenic induction coefficient. The carcinogenic potency of tritium was found to be dual in nature in enhancing the absolute induction of lymphocytic lymphomas in both sexes as well as their relative induction in competition with reticulo-endothelial tumors of other types.     

Effect of adrenaline, glucagon and insulin on glucose metabolism in carp: influence of temperature]

In carps living since 4 months at 6, 20 or 30 degrees C, epinephrine or glucagon injections produce increase in plasma glucose but affect only slightly liver glycogen: lower is the temperature, slower and longer are the effect. Insulin injection induces more or less delayed hypoglycaemia according to temperature acclimatization; decrease in blood glucose is accompanied by a slight increase of glycogen in all tissues at 6 degrees C and on the contrary by a very strong depletion of this polysaccharide in liver and even heart at 20 and 30 degrees C.
