Atherosclerotic disease, and the subsequent complications of thrombosis and plaque rupture, has been associated with local shear stress. In the diseased carotid artery, local variations in shear stress are induced by various geometrical features of the stenotic plaque. Greater stenosis severity, plaque eccentricity (symmetry) and plaque ulceration have been associated with increased risk of cerebrovascular events based on clinical trial studies. Using particle image velocimetry, the levels and patterns of shear stress (derived from both laminar and turbulent phases) were studied for a family of eight matched-geometry models incorporating independently varied plaque features – i.e. stenosis severity up to 70%, one of two forms of plaque eccentricity, and the presence of plaque ulceration). The level of laminar (ensemble-averaged) shear stress increased with increasing stenosis severity resulting in 2–16 Pa for free shear stress (FSS) and approximately double (4–36 Pa) for wall shear stress (WSS). Independent of stenosis severity, marked differences were found in the distribution and extent of shear stress between the concentric and eccentric plaque formations. The maximum WSS, found at the apex of the stenosis, decayed significantly steeper along the outer wall of an eccentric model compared to the concentric counterpart, with a 70% eccentric stenosis having 249% steeper decay coinciding with the large outer-wall recirculation zone. The presence of ulceration (in a 50% eccentric plaque) resulted in both elevated FSS and WSS levels that were sustained longer (∼20 ms) through the systolic phase compared to the non-ulcerated counterpart model, among other notable differences. Reynolds (turbulent) shear stress, elevated around the point of distal jet detachment, became prominent during the systolic deceleration phase and was widely distributed over the large recirculation zone in the eccentric stenoses. 相似文献

Type 3 secretion systems form an integral part of the arsenal of many pathogenic bacteria. These injection machines, together with their cargo of subversive effector proteins, are capable of manipulating the cellular environment of the host in order to ensure persistence of the pathogen. In order to fully appreciate the functions of Type 3 effectors, it is necessary to gain spatio‐temporal knowledge of each effector during the process of infection. A number of genetic modifications have been exploited in order to reveal effector protein secretion, translocation and subsequent activity, and localisation within host cells. In this review, we will discuss the many available approaches for tracking effector protein dynamics and discuss the challenges faced to improve the current technologies and gain a clearer picture of effector protein function. 相似文献

Four soil samples from the Kibale Forest, Uganda, representative of material regularly ingested by chimpanzees, were studied
for their mineral, chemical, and geochemical composition. These geophagy soils have a high content of metahalloysite, a partially
hydrated clay mineral that may act much like the pharmaceutical Kaopectate™. Among the elements that may act as a stimulus
or stimuli for geophagy behavior, only iron is very high (total iron ranges from 6% to 17%); other possibilities such as calcium,
chromium, cobalt, bromine, and iodine are either relatively low or are below their detection limits. Chlorine is below detection
limits which eliminates sodium chloride as a possible stimulus. Depending on relative availability in the gut, iron offers
the most likely chemical stimulus for geophagy and given the mineral composition of the samples, metahalloysite is the most
likely mineral stimulus. Iron may play a role in replenishing hemoglobin which would be important in chimpanzee physiology
at high elevations near the flanks of the Ruwenzori Mountains. Metahalloysite, which in this case exists in a relatively pure
crystalline form, may well act to quell symptoms of diarrhea and act similarly to Kaopectate™. Organic chemical analyses indicate

Abstract: The time of year and time of felling of a commercial stand of Sitka spruce ( Picea sitchensis Carr.) were both shown to influence the spatial distribution and development of the large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis (L). Stump and root systems were excavated over a 5-month period in 1997, between 18 and 27 months after felling, and all immature H. abietis removed. On a site with a 6-month spread of felling dates in 1995, mean larval weights in 1997 were higher in stumps from earlier fellings, but H. abietis numbers were higher in stumps from later fellings. This appeared to be due to the continued presence of older, heavier larvae, laid as eggs in 1995, in stumps from earlier fellings, combined with a greater concentration of oviposition having occurred in 1996 in the fresher stumps of later fellings. Pupae were first found in excavated stumps on 12 June 1997 and adults on 29 July 1997. Emergence of the 'new generation' of adult weevils commenced on 7 August 1997. On average, 25% of H. abietis adults emerged in autumn 1997, 41% in 1998 and 34% in 1999. First emergence (1997) was proportionally higher in the areas felled earlier in 1995 than those felled later that year. However, the opposite was found for third emergence (1999) where emergence was greater for stumps created later in 1995. Larger stumps contained greater densities of H. abietis . Total 'potential' emergence was estimated to be between 46400 and 170825 H. abietis /ha. However, emergence traps indicated that only 40–80% managed to complete their development and emerge successfully. It is suggested that within-season felling date may be one of the most important factors affecting larval development, distribution and abundance; as well as subsequent damage levels associated with adult feeding. Consequently, knowledge of felling date could be crucial to developing methods of integrated forest management for this major forest pest. 相似文献
