Although climate warming is expected to make habitat beyond species’ current cold range edge suitable for future colonization, this new habitat may present an array of biotic or abiotic conditions not experienced within the current range. Species’ ability to shift their range with climate change may therefore depend on how populations evolve in response to such novel environmental conditions. However, due to the recent nature of thus far observed range expansions, the role of rapid adaptation during climate change migration is only beginning to be understood. Here, we evaluated evolution during the recent native range expansion of the annual plant Dittrichia graveolens, which is spreading northward in Europe from the Mediterranean region. We examined genetically based differentiation between core and edge populations in their phenology, a trait that is likely under selection with shorter growing seasons and greater seasonality at northern latitudes. In parallel common garden experiments at range edges in Switzerland and the Netherlands, we grew plants from Dutch, Swiss, and central and southern French populations. Population genetic analysis following RAD‐sequencing of these populations supported the hypothesized central France origins of the Swiss and Dutch range edge populations. We found that in both common gardens, northern plants flowered up to 4 weeks earlier than southern plants. This differentiation in phenology extended from the core of the range to the Netherlands, a region only reached from central France over approximately the last 50 years. Fitness decreased as plants flowered later, supporting the hypothesized benefits of earlier flowering at the range edge. Our results suggest that native range expanding populations can rapidly adapt to novel environmental conditions in the expanded range, potentially promoting their ability to spread.  相似文献

An RFLP map constructed from 99 doubled haploid lines of a cross between two spring barley varieties (Blenheim × Kym) was used to localize quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling grain yield and yield components by marker regression and single-marker analysis. Trials were conducted over three years. Genotype-by-year interaction was detected for plant grain weight and ear grain weight so they were analysed separately for each year. None was detected for thousand-grain weight and ear grain number so data were pooled over years. A total of eleven QTL were detected for plant grain weight over two years and fourteen for ear grain weight over three years. Seven QTL were detected for plot yield. The locus with the largest effect was on chromosome 2(2H)L and accounted for 19% of the variation in the progeny. Eight QTL were detected for thousand-grain weight and five for ear grain number. Many of the QTL detected were in comparable positions in each year. Yield and yield components were only partly correlated. Comparisons based on common RFLP markers showed that some QTL were found in positions similar to those identified in other studies. For a number of QTL the identification of linked markers provided suitable opportunities for marker-assisted selection and improvement of barley and reference markers with which to analyse the homoeologous chromosome regions of wheat and other cereals.  相似文献

Maximum levels of binding of α-bungarotoxin to foetal human brain membranes were found to remain essentially constant at 30–50 fmol/mg protein (1.1–1.5 pmol/g wet weight in whole brain) between gestational ages of 10 and 24 weeks. Equilibrium binding of α-bungarotoxin to both membranes and to detergent extracts showed saturable specific binding to a single class of sites with Kd (app) values of 3.5 × 10?9 M and 2.4 × 10?9 M respectively. Association rate constants, determined from time courses of binding of α-bungarotoxin to membranes and detergent extracts, were 2.3 × 105 M?1 sec?1 and 2.6 × 105 M?1 sec?1 respectively. Dissociation of α-bungarotoxin from both membrane and detergent extracts showed a rapid initial rate with T12 approx 15 min which, in the case of the detergent extract, was followed by a slower dissociation accounting for the remaining 20% of the bound ligand. Competition studies with a number of cholinergic ligands indicated that the α-bungarotoxin-binding sites in foetal brain display a predominantly nicotinic profile.  相似文献

Exudate was collected periodically from the root systems of detopped tobacco plants. Volume, cations, and 42K or 86Rb transfer were measured. According to measurements of K by 42K and by the flame photometer, when concentrations of KCl and KNO3 were lower than 10−2 m, the K in the exudate came mostly from a pool in the plant rather than from the external solution. With higher external KNO3 solutions, within a few hours nearly all of the K in the exudate came directly from the external solutions. Studies with 86Rb lead to the same conclusion. In contrast the maximum proportion of K in the exudate that came from KCl in the external solution was reached usually in many hours after detopping and amounted to from 50 to 75%. The higher the external concentration the faster it was reached. These data for KCl are indicative of the 42K passing through a K pool in the root cells. K and Rb from high concentrations of KNO3 and RbNO3, however, may not pass through such a pool. The addition of 10−2 m KNO3 into the external solution during exudation essentially eliminated the effect of periodicity at least for a period of time and under the conditions of the experiments. Hydrochloric acid, mercuric chloride, anaerobiosis, and 2,4-dinitrophenol had the same effect and each resulted in a massive final exudation that usually persisted for 1 to 3 days before stopping. These results all lead to a hypothesis that periodicity is regulated at the tonoplast.  相似文献

We have compared the effect of ethanol, a membrane perturbant, on the muscarinic binding sites in neural membranes from a vertebrate (rat) and an insect (locust). The binding of the muscarinic antagonist [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate ([3H]QNB) to both rat and locust neural membranes was inhibited by ethanol at 10–500 mM concentrations; but this inhibition was greater in the locust. Ethanol (500 mM) increased the apparent dissociation constant (K d) of [3H]QNB binding to rat membranes from 0.13±0.01 nM in control to 0.20±0.02 nM; there was also an small but significant reduction in the number of binding sitesB max. In locust, 500 mM ethanol reduced theB max of [3H]QNB binding from 590±30 in control to 320±40 pmol/g protein; no significant alteration in theK D was detected. The dissociation rate constant (k off) of [3H]QNB increased from 0.020±0.003 in controls to 0.031±0.004 (min–1) in the presence of 500mM ethanol, the association rate constant (k on) did not change significantly. In locust, 500 mM ethanol did not affect eitherk on ork off. Competition experiments revealed that the binding affinities of both the agonist carbamylcholine and the antagonist atropine to the rat membranes were reduced in the presence of ethanol. In contrast, ethanol caused no alteration in the binding affinities of these ligands to the locust membranes. This differential effect of ethanol on rat and locust muscarinic binding suggests a difference in the hydrophobic domains and/or the membrane interactions of the muscarinic receptors in the two species.  相似文献

Members of an international consortium for linkage analysis of the facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) gene have pooled data for joint analyses, in an attempt to determine the precise location of the FSHD gene and the order of four DNA markers on 4q35 region. Six laboratories determined a total of 3,078 genotypes in 65 families, consisting of a total of 504 affected subjects and 559 unaffected subjects. For each marker, a mean of 648 meioses were informative. D4S139 and D4S163 were identified as the closest linked markers to the FSHD locus, with 99% upper confidence intervals of recombination fractions of .08 and .10, respectively. We have used the CRI-MAP program to construct the most likely order of cen-D4S171-F11-D4S163-D4S139-FSHD-tel, with favorable odds of 10(8)-10(114) over all other orders except that in which F11 and D4S171 are reversed, for which the odds ratio was 191:1. With this order, the genetic map of this region extends 25.5 cM in males and 13.8 cM in females (averaging 19.5 cM for sexes combined); the sex difference was statistically significant (P = .0013). Comparison between families for the two-point and multipoint lod scores involving FSHD showed no evidence for heterogeneity of this disorder. However, after the completion of this analysis, one large family which might show heterogeneity was identified. In view of this and the fact that all of the linked markers reside on the same side of the FSHD locus, the clinical application of these markers is not recommended at this time.  相似文献

A new series of organic salts with selective near‐infrared (NIR) harvesting to 950 nm is reported, and anion selection and blending is demonstrated to allow for fine tuning of the open‐circuit voltage. Extending photoresponse deeper into the NIR is a significant challenge facing small molecule organic photovoltaics, and recent demonstrations have been limited by open‐circuit voltages much lower than the theoretical and practical limits. This work presents molecular design strategies that enable facile tuning of energy level alignment and open‐circuit voltages in organic salt‐based photovoltaics. Anions are also shown to have a strong influence on exciton diffusion length. These insights provide a clear route toward achieving high efficiency transparent and panchromatic photovoltaics, and open up design opportunities to rapidly tailor molecules for new donor–acceptor systems.  相似文献

Degraded communities often contain a subset of the species that comprised the predisturbance community. These represent an important legacy of the predisturbance state, yet restoration treatments may be detrimental to them. This study examined the potential of leaf traits and life form to predict whether restoration treatments can maintain legacy swards of Austrostipa bigeniculata (hereafter Austrostipa) while controlling exotic annuals in temperate eucalypt woodlands. Treatments included carbon addition to reduce soil nitrate, both with and without burning or pulse grazing to deplete exotic seed pools. We compared leaf traits of Austrostipa with a native grass (Themeda triandra) known to be advantaged, and 8 exotic annual species known to be disadvantaged by these treatments. Leaf traits indicated potentially greater negative impacts of carbon addition on exotic annuals compared to Austrostipa, and on Austrostipa compared to Themeda, suggesting a net restoration benefit. Similarly, burning or pulse grazing is expected to have little negative impact on perennial resprouting grasses (hemicryptophytes; Austrostipa and Themeda) compared with annual exotics (therophytes) with short‐lived seed banks. Treatment responses were largely consistent with predictions: treatments that significantly reduced exotic annuals had no net disadvantage to Austrostipa swards despite significant reductions in Austrostipa seedling growth with carbon addition. Indeed by Year 3, Austrostipa mortality in untreated plots led to 46% lower Austrostipa abundance than in treated plots at one site, potentially due to litter build‐up or other mechanisms. We conclude that plant traits provide a useful framework for designing restoration transitions that retain native legacy species while controlling exotics.  相似文献

Shamanic belief systems represent the first form of religious practice visible within the global archaeological record. Here we report on the earliest known evidence of shamanic costume: modified red deer crania headdresses from the Early Holocene site of Star Carr (c. 11 kya). More than 90% of the examples from prehistoric Europe come from this one site, establishing it as a place of outstanding shamanistic/cosmological significance. Our work, involving a programme of experimental replication, analysis of macroscopic traces, organic residue analysis and 3D image acquisition, metrology and visualisation, represents the first attempt to understand the manufacturing processes used to create these artefacts. The results produced were unexpected—rather than being carefully crafted objects, elements of their production can only be described as expedient.  相似文献
