We use microeconomic theory to frame hypotheses about the effects of income on the use of non-timber rain forest products. We hypothesize that an increase in income: (a) encourages foraging specialization, resulting in the extraction of fewer goods; (b) increases the share of household income from occupations besides foraging; (c) produces a yearly value from the extraction of nontimber forest goods of about $50 per hectare; and (d) produces depletion of forest goods entering commercial channels and sustainable extraction of goods facing cheaper industrial substitutes. To examine these hypotheses we present worldwide ethnographic information and preliminary findings from field work carried out among the Sumu Indians of Nicaragua. Field work suggests that higher income produces: (a) foraging specialization with animals rather than with plants; (b) a decline in the economic importance of forest goods in household income; (c) and a rise in the value of non-timber goods removed from the forest to about $35/ha/year. Physiol. 82(4):1327-1332, 1997.Our aim was to examine the effect of prioreccentric contractions on insulin action locally in muscle in theintact conscious rat. Anesthetized rats performed one-leg eccentriccontractions through the use of calf muscle electrical stimulationfollowed by stretch of the active muscles. Two days later, basal andeuglycemic clamp studies were conducted with the rats in the awakefasted state. Muscle glucose metabolism was estimated from2-[14C(U)]deoxy-D-glucoseandD-[3-3H]glucose administration, and comparisons were made between the eccentrically stimulated and nonstimulated (control) calfmuscles. At midphysiological insulin levels, effects ofprior eccentric exercise on muscle glucose uptake were notstatistically significant. Maximal insulin stimulation revealed reducedincremental glucose uptake above basal(P < 0.05 in the red gastrocnemius;P < 0.1 in the white gastrocnemiusand soleus) and impaired net glycogen synthesis in all eccentricallystimulated muscles (P < 0.05). Weconclude that prior eccentric contractions impair maximal insulin action (responsiveness) on local muscle glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis in the conscious rat.

J. Appl.Physiol. 83(2): 599-607, 1997.Sleep-relatedrespiratory disturbances are more common in men than in premenopausalwomen. This might, in part, be due to different susceptibilities to therespiratory depressant effects of hypoxia. Therefore, we comparedventilation during 10 min of baseline room-air breathing and 20-minsustained isocapnic hypoxia (fractional inspiredO2 = 11%, arterial saturation ofO2  80%) followed by 10 min ofbreathing 100% O2 in 10 normal men and in 10 women in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Control measurements were made during two transitions from room air (10 min) to 100% O2 (10 min) andaveraged. Inspired minute ventilation(I) after2 min of hypoxia was the same in men and women [131 ± 6.1%baseline for men, 136 ± 7.7% baseline for women; not significant(NS)] and declined to the same level after 20 min (115 ± 5.0% baseline for men, 116 ± 6.6% baseline for women; NS)associated with a similar decline in inspiratory time and tidal volume.Breathing frequency did not change.I decreased transiently during subsequent 100%O2 breathing in both men and women, associated with reduced frequency and duty cycle and increased expiratory time. The fall inI wassignificantly greater than that observed during control hyperoxiaexperiments in men but not in women. We conclude that ventilatoryresponses to sustained isocapnic hypoxia do not differ between awakehealthy men and women in the follicular phase of their menstrual cycle.However, after termination of isocapnic hypoxia, men appear to depress their ventilation to a greater degree than women.

Physiol. 82(1): 317-323, 1997.We examinedventilation and metabolism in four rat strains with variation in traitsfor body weight and/or blood pressure regulation.Sprague-Dawley [SD; 8 males (M), 8 females (F)], BrownNorway (BN; 10 M, 11 F), and Zucker (Z; 11 M, 12 F) rats were comparedwith Koletsky (K; 11 M, 11 F) rats. With the use of noninvasiveplethysmography, frequency, tidal volume, minute ventilation(E),O2 consumption, andCO2 production were derived atrest during normoxia (room air) and during the 5th minute of exposureto each of the following: hyperoxia (100% O2), hypoxia (10%O2-balanceN2), and hypercapnia (7%CO2-balance O2). Statistical methods probedfor strain and sex effects, with covariant analysis by body weight,length, and body mass. During resting breathing, strain effects werefound with respect to both frequency (BN, Z > K, SD) and tidal volume(SD > BN, Z) but not to E. Sexinfluenced frequency (F > M) alone. Z rats had higher values forO2 consumption,CO2 production, and respiratoryquotient than the other three strains, with no independent effect bysex. During hyperoxia, frequency was greater in BN and Z than in SD orK rats; SD rats had a larger tidal volume than BN or Z rats; Z rats hada greater E than K rats; and M had alarger tidal volume than F. Strain differences persisted duringhypercapnia, with Z rats exhibiting the highest frequency andE values. During hypoxic exposure,strain effects were found to influenceE (SD > K, Z), frequency (BN > K), and tidal volume (SD > BN, K, Z). Body mass was only amodest predictor of E during normoxia, of both E and tidal volume withhypoxia, hypercapnia, or hyperoxia, and of frequency duringhypercapnia. We conclude that strain of rats, more than their body massor sex, has major and different influences on metabolism, the patternand level of ventilation during air breathing, and ventilation duringacute exposure to hypercapnia or hypoxia.

 In a previous study, nonlinear autoregressive (NLAR) models applied to ictal electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings in six patients revealed nonlinear signal interactions that correlated with seizure type and clinical diagnosis. Here we interpret these models from a theoretical viewpoint. Extended models with multiple nonlinear terms are employed to demonstrate the independence of nonlinear dynamical interactions identified in the ‘NLAR fingerprint’ of patients with 3/s seizure discharges. Analysis of the role of periodicity in the EEG signal reveals that the fingerprints reflect the dynamics not only of the periodic discharge itself, but also of the fluctuations of each cycle about an average waveform. A stability analysis is used to make qualitative inferences concerning the network properties of the ictal generators. The Zinnia mesophyll cell system consists of isolated leaf mesophyll cells in culture that can be induced, by auxin and cytokinin, to transdifferentiate semi-synchronously into tracheary elements (TEs). This system has been used to establish the precise time point at which the TE cell fate becomes determined, and then changes have been looked for in cell-wall composition and architecture that are associated with the establishment of competence, determination, and differentiation with the transition from primary to secondary cell wall formation. At very early stages in this time course, changes in the repertoire of proteins and polysaccharides both in the cell wall and secreted into the culture medium were found. Changes in the secretion of pectic polysaccharides, xyloglucans and arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) have been detected using the monoclonal antibodies JIM 7, CCRC-M1 and JIM 13, that recognize these three classes of cell-wall molecule, respectively. Twenty-four hours before secondary thickenings are visible, an AGP is present in the primary walls of a subpopulation of cells, and is secreted into the culture medium. This molecule is present in the secondary thickenings of mature TEs but not in their surrounding primary walls. Methyl-esterified pectic polysaccharides are present in all cell walls and are secreted into the culture medium throughout the time course of differentiation, though at an increased rate in inductive medium. However, sugar and linkage analysis of culture media shows that a relatively unbranched rhamnogalacturonan is enriched in inductive medium around the time of determination and increases rapidly in concentration. The amount of fucosylated xyloglucan in cell walls increases during the time course, but appears in inductive medium 24 h earlier than in control medium and may have a subtly different structure. The fucose-containing epitope on the xyloglucan disappears abruptly and entirely from inductive medium 6 h before any secondary thickenings are visible in the cells. The disappearance of the epitope is correlated with secretion of several hydrolytic enzyme activities. In Zinnia leaves, the mesophyll cell walls contain neither the fucosylated xyloglucan nor the AGP, although methylesterified pectin is present. All three epitopes are expressed in the vascular bundles, and the AGP is specifically localized in the xylem cells. Fucosylated xyloglucan is also present in the epidermal tissue, and the AGP is present in guard cells. The dynamic behaviour of these specific cell-wall molecules is tightly correlated with differentiation events in vitro, and can be clearly distinguished from the production of new wall material found in expanding and elongating cells. The precise timing of the appearance and disappearance of these proteins and polysaccharides compared with the point of cell-fate determination provides us with a series of cell-surface markers for cell states at very early times in the transdifferentiation pathway.  相似文献

The suggestion that the ethanol regulatory protein from Aspergillus has its evolutionary origin in a gene fusion between aldehyde and alcohol dehydrogenase genes (Hawkins AR, Lamb HK, Radford A, Moore JD, 1994, Gene 146:145-158) has been tested by profile analysis with aldehyde and alcohol dehydrogenase family profiles. We show that the degree and kind of similarity observed between these profiles and the ethanol regulatory protein sequence is that expected from random sequences of the same composition.
