A bivalve fauna of Early Ordovician (late Arenig) age is described from the Hsiangyang Formation of the eastern part of West Yunnan, China. The fauna contains elements in common with Early Ordovician faunas of southern Gondwanan areas such as the Montagne Noire and Morocco and with those of Avalonia, together with several previously undescribed taxa. The following taxa are new: Biseriodonta simplex gen. et sp. nov.; Glyptarca sinensis sp. nov.; Trigonoglyptarca magna gen. et sp. nov.; Erhaiconcha xiangyangensis gen. et sp. nov.; Fasciculodonta impressa gen. et sp. nov.; Yunnanoredonia laevis gen. et sp. nov.; Daliella gen. nov.; Goniophorina ( Goniophorina ) contracta sp. nov.; Haidongoconcha radialis gen. et sp. nov.; Eopterinea aequiconcha gen. et sp. nov. The bivalve fauna includes the most diverse glyptarcid fauna and the earliest nuculanid and paracyclid known hitherto. Eastern West Yunnan belonged to the Indochina terrane and it is concluded that the bivalve fauna represents a high-latitude assemblage and that the Indochina terrane should be considered a component part of the Peri-Gondwanan continent in the Ordovician; its bivalve faunas contrast with those of neighbouring terranes which have affinities with those of lower latitudes. 相似文献

The mechanisms behind the increased incidence of marrow graft failure in recipients that receive allogeneic marrow depleted of T cells were studied. Recipient mice were lethally irradiated and challenged with bone marrow cells (BMC) from C.B-17 +/+ (+/+) donors. Radioisotope 125IUdR incorporation was assessed 5 to 7 days after transfer to determine the extent of engraftment. Some groups received BMC in which the T cells were removed by treatment with antibody and C. In addition, some groups received BMC from T cell-deficient C.B-17 scid/scid (SCID) mice to determine the postulated need for donor T cells in hematopoiesis and engraftment. In a model system that distinguishes between possible host NK cell and radioresistant T cell-mediated rejection of marrow allografts, it was determined that the absence of donor T cells in a marrow graft does not affect engraftment in syngeneic recipients. However, both host NK cell and radioresistant T cell rejection was markedly enhanced when SCID BMC or BMC from C.B-17 +/+ donors that had T cells removed by antibody and complement were infused into irradiated allogeneic recipients. Furthermore, the addition of alloreactive thymocytes as a source of T cells could abrogate this increased susceptibility of the BMC to host rejection mechanisms. As determined by histology and 59Fe uptake, the addition of thymocytes resulted in enhanced erythropoiesis. These results suggest that the increased incidence of marrow graft failure when BMC depleted of T cells are used is a result of active rejection by host effector cells and that the adverse effect of marrow T cell depletion can be reversed by the addition of thymocytes. 相似文献

In cooperatively breeding and other family living species, there are often more individuals of reproductive age than available breeding positions. Asking how individuals attain reproductive status is therefore crucial if we are to understand the selection pressures that operate in these groups. Here, we present data on routes to breeding in pied babblers Turdoides bicolor, cooperatively breeding passerines from the Kalahari Desert. Individuals of both sexes remained on the natal territory into adulthood, despite being relatively unlikely to breed there. Instead, individuals seemed to use the natal territory as a base to monitor the availability of breeding positions elsewhere. Both sexes were most likely to attain breeding status by moving into vacant breeding positions on non‐natal territories, although females also occasionally seized breeding positions by overthrowing breeding females on foreign territories. We discuss these patterns in the context of existing theoretical and empirical data. 相似文献

1. There is growing interest in the causes and consequences of animal temperaments. Temperament behaviours often have heritable components, but ecological variables can also affect them. Numerous variables are likely to differ between habitats, and these may interact to influence temperament behaviours. 2. Temperament behaviours may be correlated within populations (behavioural syndromes), although the underlying causes of such correlations are currently unclear. 3. We analysed three different temperament behaviours and learning ability in three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, to determine how different ecological variables influence them both within and between populations. We selected populations from four ponds and four rivers that varied naturally in their exposure to predators. 4. High-predation river populations were significantly less bold than a high-predation pond and low-predation river populations, and low-predation pond populations were significantly less bold than a high-predation pond population. Within populations, temperament behaviours were correlated in one high-predation river population only. 5. These results suggest that multiple ecological factors can interact to affect temperament behaviours between populations, and also correlations in those behaviours within populations. 相似文献

Ant-repellent floral volatiles offer one method through which plants can mediate the detrimental effects of ants on flowers. Although the repellence itself is well documented, the volatiles involved are less well explored. Here, we investigated the floral bouquet of ant-repellent male flowers of Petasites fragrans, identifying 4-methoxybenzaldehyde as the main component. 4-methoxybenzaldehyde significantly repelled ants when presented in isolation in an olfactometer and thus is the likely source of the repellent effect. As 4-methoxybenzaldehyde has previously been shown to attract pollinators, it may therefore have a dual function in P. fragrans, pollinator-attractant and ant-repellent. Additionally, 4-methoxybenzaldehyde is particularly interesting as an ant-repellent as it has been observed in the bouquets of other plant species with specific ant interactions. 相似文献

Oxaziclomefone [OAC; IUPAC name 3-(1-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-1-methylethyl)-3,4-dihydro-6-methyl-5-phenyl-2H-1,3-oxazin-4-one] is a new herbicide that inhibits cell expansion in grass roots. Its effects on cell cultures and mode of action were unknown. In principle, cell expansion could be inhibited by a decrease in either turgor pressure or wall extensibility. Cell expansion was estimated as settled cell volume; cell division was estimated by cell counting. Membrane permeability to water was measured by a novel method involving simultaneous assay of the efflux of (3)H(2)O and [(14)C]mannitol from a 'bed' of cultured cells. Osmotic potential was measured by depression of freezing point. OAC inhibited cell expansion in cultures of maize (Zea mays), spinach (Spinacia oleracea) and rose (Rosa sp.), with an ID(50) of 5, 30 and 250 nm, respectively. In maize cultures, OAC did not affect cell division for the first 40 h. It did not affect the osmotic potential of cell sap or culture medium, nor did it impede water transport across cell membranes. It did not affect cells' ability to acidify the apoplast (medium), which may be necessary for 'acid growth'. As OAC did not diminish turgor pressure, its ability to inhibit cell expansion must depend on changes in wall extensibility. It could be a valuable tool for studies on cell expansion. 相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oxaziclomefone (OAC), a new herbicide, inhibits cell expansion, especially in roots and cell-cultures of gramineous monocots. OAC does not affect turgor in cultured maize cells, and must therefore inhibit wall-loosening or promote wall-tightening. METHODS: The effects of OAC in living cultured maize cells on various biochemical processes thought to influence wall extension were studied. KEY RESULTS: OAC did not affect 14C-incorporation from D-[U-14C]glucose into the major sugar residues of the cell wall (cellulosic glucose, non-cellulosic glucose, arabinose, xylose, galactose, mannose or uronic acids). OAC had no effect on 14C-incorporation from trans-[U-14C]cinnamate into wall-bound ferulate or its oxidative coupling-products. OAC did not influence the secretion or in-vivo action of peroxidase or xyloglucan endotransglucosylase activities-proposed wall-tightening and -loosening activities, respectively. The herbicide did not affect the consumption of extracellular L-ascorbate, an apoplastic solute proposed to act as an antioxidant and/or to generate wall-loosening hydroxyl radicals. CONCLUSIONS: OAC decreased wall extensibility without influencing the synthesis or post-synthetic modification of major architectural wall components, or the redox environment of the apoplast. The possible value of OAC as a probe to explore aspects of primary cell wall physiology is discussed. 相似文献
