Introduction
Falls are common in older people and increase in prevalence with advancing old age. There is limited knowledge about their impact in those aged 85 years and older, the fastest growing age group of the population. We investigated the prevalence and impact of falls, and the overlap between falls, dizziness and blackouts, in a population-based sample of 85 year olds.Methods
Design: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from Newcastle 85+ Cohort Study. Setting: Primary care, North-East England. Participants: 816 men and women aged 85 years. Measurements: Structured interview with research nurse. Cost-consequence analysis of fall-related healthcare costs.Results
Over 38% (313/816) of participants had fallen at least once in the previous 12 months and of these: 10.6% (33/312) sustained a fracture, 30.1% (94/312) attended an emergency department, and 12.8% (40/312) were admitted to hospital. Only 37.2% (115/309) of fallers had specifically discussed their falls problem with their general practitioner and only 12.7% (39/308) had seen a falls specialist. The average annual healthcare cost per faller was estimated at £202 (inter-quartile range £174–£231) or US$329 ($284–$377). ‘Worry about falling’ was experienced by 42.0% (128/305) of fallers, ‘loss of confidence’ by 40.0% (122/305), and ‘going out less often’ by 25.9% (79/305); each was significantly more common in women, odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for women: men of 2.63 (1.45–4.55), 4.00 (2.27–7.14), and 2.86 (1.54–5.56) respectively. Dizziness and blackouts were reported by 40.0% (318/796) and 6.4% (52/808) of participants respectively. There was marked overlap in the report of falls, dizziness and blackouts.Conclusions
Falls in 85 year olds are very common, associated with considerable psychological and physical morbidity, and have high impact on healthcare services. Wider use of fall prevention services is needed. Significant expansion in acute and preventative services is required in view of the rapid growth in this age group. 相似文献102.
Ribosomal DNA fragments of 1.0, 3.4, 3.7 and 6.1 kb2 produced by EcoRI digestion of the Caulobacter crescentus genome were identified by hybridization to a labeled ribosomal RNA probe. These genomic sequences were further characterized by the isolation of 13 hybrid λ Charon 4 phages with rDNA inserts, and two of the recombinant phages, Ch4Cc773 and Ch4Cc1880, were examined extensively. The Cc773 insert contains EcoRI fragments of 1.0 kb, 3.4 kb and 3.7 kb and the Cc1880 insert contains EcoRI fragments of 1.0 kb, 3.4 kb and 6.1 kb that hybridized to 32P-labeled rRNA. Thus, the two clones contain different DNA inserts which together account for all of the rDNA fragments detected in digests of the C. crescentus genome. Hybridization with isolated transfer RNA and individual rRNA species indicated that the arrangement of genes in both units is 16 S-spacer tRNA(s)-23 S-5 S, tRNA(s). Homology between the DNA inserts is largely restricted to the rRNA coding regions, which suggests that the two rDNA units are located in different regions of the chromosome. Results of quantitative hybridization experiments are most consistent with a single Cc1880 and Cc773 unit per genome equivalent of 2.7 × 109 daltons. The relatively simple organization of rDNA sequences in the C. crescentus chromosome compared to Escherichia coli is discussed. 相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollutants originating from oil spills and wood and fuel combustion are pollutants which are among the major threats to mangrove ecosystems. In this study, the composition and relative abundance in the sediment bacterial communities of naphthalene dioxygenase (ndo) genes which are important for bacterial adaptation to environmental PAH contamination were investigated. Three urban mangrove sites which had characteristic compositions and levels of PAH compounds in the sediments were selected. The diversity and relative abundance of ndo genes in total community DNA were assessed by a newly developed ndo denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) approach and by PCR amplification with primers targeting ndo genes with subsequent Southern blot hybridization analyses. Bacterial populations inhabiting sediments of urban mangroves under the impact of different sources of PAH contamination harbor distinct ndo genotypes. Sequencing of cloned ndo amplicons comigrating with dominant DGGE bands revealed new ndo genotypes. PCR-Southern blot analysis and ndo DGGE showed that the frequently studied nah and phn genotypes were not detected as dominant ndo types in the mangrove sediments. However, ndo genotypes related to nagAc-like genes were detected, but only in oil-contaminated mangrove sediments. The long-term impact of PAH contamination, together with the specific environmental conditions at each site, may have affected the abundance and diversity of ndo genes in sediments of urban mangroves. 相似文献

The acI lineage of freshwater Actinobacteria is a cosmopolitan and often numerically dominant member of lake bacterial communities. We conducted a survey of acI 16S rRNA genes and 16S-23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer regions from 18 Wisconsin lakes and used standard nonphylogenetic and phylogenetic statistical approaches to investigate the factors that determine acI community composition at the local scale (within lakes) and at the regional scale (across lakes). Phylogenetic reconstruction of 434 acI 16S rRNA genes revealed a well-defined and highly resolved phylogeny. Eleven previously unrecognized monophyletic clades, each with ≥97.9% within-clade 16S rRNA gene sequence identity, were identified. Clade community similarity positively correlated with lake environmental similarity but not with geographic distance, implying that the lakes represent a single biotic region containing environmental filters for communities that have similar compositions. Phylogenetically disparate clades within the acI lineage were most abundant at the regional scale, and local communities were comprised of more closely related clades. Lake pH was a strong predictor of the community composition, but only when lakes with a pH below 6 were included in the data set. In the remaining lakes (pH above 6) biogeographic patterns in the landscape were instead a predictor of the observed acI community structure. The nonrandom distribution of the newly defined acI clades suggests potential ecophysiological differences between the clades, with acI clades AI, BII, and BIII preferring acidic lakes and acI clades AII, AVI, and BI preferring more alkaline lakes. 相似文献

FetA, formerly designated FrpB, an iron-regulated, 76-kDa neisserial outer membrane protein, shows sequence homology to the TonB-dependent family of receptors that transport iron into gram-negative bacteria. Although FetA is commonly expressed by most neisserial strains and is a potential vaccine candidate for both Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis, its function in cell physiology was previously undefined. We now report that FetA functions as an enterobactin receptor. N. gonorrhoeae FA1090 utilized ferric enterobactin as the sole iron source when supplied with ferric enterobactin at approximately 10 microM, but growth stimulation was abolished when an omega (Omega) cassette was inserted within fetA or when tonB was insertionally interrupted. FA1090 FetA specifically bound 59Fe-enterobactin, with a Kd of approximately 5 microM. Monoclonal antibodies raised against the Escherichia coli enterobactin receptor, FepA, recognized FetA in Western blots, and amino acid sequence comparisons revealed that residues previously implicated in ferric enterobactin binding by FepA were partially conserved in FetA. An open reading frame downstream of fetA, designated fetB, predicted a protein with sequence similarity to the family of periplasmic binding proteins necessary for transporting siderophores through the periplasmic space of gram-negative bacteria. An Omega insertion within fetB abolished ferric enterobactin utilization without causing a loss of ferric enterobactin binding. These data show that FetA is a functional homolog of FepA that binds ferric enterobactin and may be part of a system responsible for transporting the siderophore into the cell. 相似文献

Objective: The aim of the present study was to analyse the characteristics of salivary production and its composition in individuals with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Study Design: Salivary flow rate, concentrations of potassium, iron, chloride, thiocyanate, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, glucose, total protein and urea, as well as the expression profile of salivary proteins were analysed by SDS‐PAGE. Results: The mean salivary flow rate among control patients was lower than that of BMS patients. Chloride, phosphorus and potassium levels were elevated in patients with BMS (p = 0.041, 0.001 and 0.034, respectively). Total salivary protein concentration was reduced in individuals with BMS (p = 0.223). Analysis of the expression of salivary proteins by Coomassie blue SDS‐PAGE revealed a lower expression of low molecular weight proteins in individuals with BMS compared to healthy controls. Conclusions: These results indicate that the identification and characterisation of low molecular weight salivary proteins in BMS may be important in understanding BMS pathogenesis, thus contributing to its diagnosis and treatment. 相似文献

The nonchromosomal stripe 2 (NCS2) mutant of maize (Zea mays L.) has a DNA rearrangement in the mitochondrial genome that segregates with the abnormal growth phenotype. Yet, the NCS2 characteristic phenotype includes striped sectors of pale-green tissue on the leaves. This suggests a chloroplast abnormality. To characterize the chloroplasts present in the mutant sectors, we examined the chloroplast structure by electron microscopy, chloroplast function by radiolabeled carbon dioxide fixation and fluorescence induction kinetics, and thylakoid protein composition by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The data from these analyses suggest abnormal or prematurely arrested chloroplast development. Deleterious effects of the NCS2 mutant mitochondria upon the cells of the leaf include structural and functional alterations in the both the bundle sheath and mesophyll chloroplasts. 相似文献

The genus Antimerus Fauvel, 1878, endemic to eastern Australia and Tasmania and a phylogenetically enigmatic member of the large rove beetle tribe Staphylinini, is revised. The genus and each of its four previously known species are redescribed, and a lectotype is designated for Antimerus punctipennis Lea, 1906. Five species are described as new: Antimerus metallicussp. n., Antimerus jamesrodmanisp. n., Antimerus gracilissp. n., Antimerus bellussp. n. and Antimerus monteithisp. n., so that the number of known species in this genus now totals nine. For the first time Antimerus larvae are described, tentatively identified as Antimerus smaragdinus Fauvel, 1878, Antimerus punctipennis and Antimerus metallicus. Available distributional and bionomic data are provided for each species and summarized in the discussion. Adult and larval morphology of Antimerus and its distribution patterns are discussed in the broader context of new data on the evolution of the entire tribe Staphylinini, and with respect to the formation of the Australian fauna of this tribe. The phylogenetic position of Antimerus within Staphylinini remains unresolved pending a targeted formal study. However, a majority of currently available data suggests that it could be a basal member of the recently recovered monophyletic clade of Staphylinini tentatively called "Staphylinini propria". 相似文献

A decline in the availability of nitrogen (N) for plant growth (progressive nitrogen limitation or PNL) is a feedback that could constrain terrestrial ecosystem responses to elevated atmospheric CO2. Several long-term CO2 enrichment experiments have measured changes in plant and soil pools and fluxes consistent with PNL but evidence for PNL in grasslands is limited. In an 11 year Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment on grazed grassland we found the amount of N harvested in aboveground plant biomass was greater at elevated CO2 but declined over time to be indistinguishable from ambient after 5 years. Re-wetting after a major drought resulted in a large input of N from mineralisation and a return to a higher N harvested under elevated CO2 followed by a further decline. Over these two periods the amount of N in soil significantly increased at elevated CO2. Data from mesocosms introduced into the rings at intervals, and therefore having different lengths of exposure to CO2, showed plant N availability declined at elevated CO2 reaching a new equilibrium after 6 years of exposure. We conclude that the availability of N for plants in this grassland is dynamic but the underlying trend at elevated CO2 is for PNL. 相似文献

We reviewed the evidence on the role of ants as plant biotic defenses, by conducting meta-analyses for the effects of experimental
removal of ants on plant herbivory and fitness with data pooled from 81 studies. Effects reviewed were plant herbivory, herbivore
abundance, hemipteran abundance, predator abundance, plant biomass and reproduction in studies where ants were experimentally
removed (n = 273 independent comparisons). Ant removal exhibited strong effects on herbivory rates, as plants without ants suffered
almost twice as much damage and exhibited 50% more herbivores than plants with ants. Ants also influenced several parameters
of plant fitness, as plants without ants suffered a reduction in biomass (−23.7%), leaf production (−51.8%), and reproduction
(−24.3%). Effects were much stronger in tropical regions compared to temperate ones. Tropical plants suffered almost threefold
higher herbivore damage than plants from temperate regions and exhibited three times more herbivores. Ant removal in tropical
plants resulted in a decrease in plant fitness of about 59%, whereas in temperate plants this reduction was not statistically
significant. Ant removal effects were also more important in obligate ant–plants (=myrmecophytes) compared to plants exhibiting
facultative relationships with hemiptera or those plants with extrafloral nectaries and food bodies. When only tropical plants
were considered and the strength of the association between ants and plants taken into account, plants with obligate association
with ants exhibited almost four times higher herbivory compared to plants with facultative associations with ants, but similar
reductions in plant reproduction. The removal of a single ant species increased plant herbivory by almost three times compared
to the removal of several ant species. Altogether, these results suggest that ants do act as plant biotic defenses, but the
effects of their presence are more pronounced in tropical systems, especially in myrmecophytic plants.
