Identification of the main gestagen metabolite in marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) urine by NMR and MS spectroscopy

Hydroxypregnanolone is the most abundant progesterone metabolite in the urine of marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus). The substance is excreted as conjugate. The concentration of this steroid may be monitored by high performance, thin layer chromatography and postchromatographic derivatization. Hydroxypregnanolone was purified and subsequently identified by NMR spectroscopy and gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. The exact chemical structure is 5 alpha-pregnane-3 alpha, 7 alpha-diol-20-one.     

Transient dynamics and pattern formation: reactivity is necessary for Turing instabilities.

The theory of spatial pattern formation via Turing bifurcations - wherein an equilibrium of a nonlinear system is asymptotically stable in the absence of dispersal but unstable in the presence of dispersal - plays an important role in biology, chemistry and physics. It is an asymptotic theory, concerned with the long-term behavior of perturbations. In contrast, the concept of reactivity describes the short-term transient behavior of perturbations to an asymptotically stable equilibrium. In this article we show that there is a connection between these two seemingly disparate concepts. In particular, we show that reactivity is necessary for Turing instability in multispecies systems of reaction-diffusion equations, integrodifference equations, coupled map lattices, and systems of ordinary differential equations.     

Seasonal environmental variability drives microdiversity within a coastal Synechococcus population

Marine microbes often show a high degree of physiological or ecological diversity below the species level. This microdiversity raises questions about the processes that drive diversification and permit coexistence of diverse yet closely related marine microbes, especially given the theoretical efficiency of competitive exclusion. Here, we provide insight with an 8-year time series of diversity within Synechococcus, a widespread and important marine picophytoplankter. The population of Synechococcus on the Northeast U.S. Shelf is comprised of six main types, each of which displays a distinct and consistent seasonal pattern. With compositional data analysis, we show that these patterns can be reproduced with a simple model that couples differential responses to temperature and light with the seasonal cycle of the physical environment. These observations support the hypothesis that temporal variability in environmental factors can maintain microdiversity in marine microbial populations. We also identify how seasonal diversity patterns directly determine overarching Synechococcus population abundance features.     

Bioaccumulation of selected metals in the gill,liver and muscle tissue of rednose labeo Labeo rosae from two impoundments on the Olifants River,Limpopo river system,South Africa

Metal concentrations in the gill, muscle and liver tissues of Labeo rosae from two impoundments, Loskop and Flag Boshielo dams on the Olifants River, were evaluated in 2011 to detect patterns in metal associations between tissues and impoundments. Elevated concentrations of Ba, Zn, B, Al, Si and Fe, relative to a pristine site in the catchment, were found in the muscle, liver and gill tissues at both impoundments. Molybdenum concentrations were exceptionally high in all tissues at Loskop Dam and in liver at Flag Boshielo Dam. No definite pattern in the ratio metal concentrations within, or between, fish tissues was identified. The expected trend, liver > gills > muscle, was found at both impoundments, but was less prominent at Loskop Dam. Metal concentrations in muscle of Loskop Dam fish were significantly higher than in those at Flag Boshielo Dam. The inverse was true for liver. The long-term impact of elevated metal concentrations on fish health at both impoundments raises concern.     

Contribution to the knowledge of the Orculinae from Northeastern Turkey (Mollusca: Stylommatophora: Orculidae)

Summary

Some species of the Orculidae from the drainage area of the river çoruh are investigated and a lectotype is designated for Schileykula batumensis (Retowski, 1889). The range of this species and of Schileykula trapezensis (Stojaspal, 1981) is defined and the existence of intermediate forms is shown. These intermediates can be explained by the introgression of populations that are not yet completely isolated reproduetively. A new left-coiled subspecies of trapezensis is described. The problem of mirror images is discussed.     

Model aided dynamic process analysis and optimization for the nourseothricin fermentation

The relation between product formation and growth kinetics could be characterized by two facts: the specific product formation rate depends on the ageing of the population and on the specific growth rate. These relation was formulated and quantified by a mathematical model, which was fitted to experimental data of a representative fermentation run und used to predict an optimal fermentation mode. In the result of this discussion cyclic fed batch fermentation was found to be optimal.
