Motor control in primates relates to a system which is highly redundant from the mechanical point of view — redundancy coming from an imbalance between the set of independently controllable variables and the set of system variables. The consequence is the manifestation of a broad class of ill-posed problems, problems for which it is difficult to identify unique solutions. For example (i) the problem of determining the coordinated patterns of rotation of the arm joints for a planned trajectory of the hand; (ii) the problem of determining the distribution of muscle forces for a desired set of joint torques. Ill-posed problems, in general, require regularization methods which allow to spell acceptable, if not unique, solutions. In the case of the motor system, we propose that the basic regularization mechanism is provided by the potential fields generated by the elastic properties of muscles, according to an organizational principle that we call Passive Motion Paradigm. The physiological basis of this hypothesis is reviewed and a Kinematic Network (K-net) model is proposed that expresses the kinematic transformations and the causal relations implied by elasticity. Moreover, it is shown how K-nets can be obtained from a kinematic Body Model, in the context of a specific task. Two particularly significant results are: (i) the uniform treatment of closed as well as open kinematic chains, and (ii) the development of a new method for the automatic generation of kinematic equations with arbitrary topology. Moreover, the model is akin to the concept of motor equivalence in the sense that it provides families of motor equivalent trajectories parametrized by tunable motor impedances.  相似文献

Evaluation of woody vegetation changes with distance from a salt crater was conducted in the semi‐arid rangelands of southern Ethiopia. Data on live woody plants were collected over three seasons at 0, 1, 4, 6, 9 and 12 km from the salt crater. The density and diversity of woody plants differed significantly (< .01) along the distance gradient. Six woody plant families were identified of which Fabaceae and Burseraceae were the dominant families. Acacia drepanolobium, Acacia nilotica, Commiphora africana and Acacia mellifera were among the severely encroaching woody species. There were high proportions of seedlings and saplings recorded closer to the salt crater showing a vigorous recruitment by woody plants. Woody plant encroachment along the 12‐km transect ranged from a low to severe encroachment, which could be translated into poor rangeland condition. Changes in soil characteristics increased grazing pressure and sedentary settlement around the salt crater, and the breakdown of traditional institutions seems to be major contributing factors to these vegetation changes. We suggest that severely encroached areas could be improved through a combination of methods such as bush clearing, prescribed fire, browsing animals and proper grazing management.  相似文献

The application of appropriate analytical methods is an essential requirement for the purification of therapeutic antibodies. A range of analytical methods need to be employed to effectively determine the purity, identity, integrity and activity of these important class of pharmaceuticals. These include notably electrophoresis, high performance liquid chromatography and immunoassays. Regulatory and industry demands in recent years have brought the need for improvements and many have been successfully implemented. Introduction

Trained human resources are fundamental for well-functioning health systems, and the lack of health workers undermines public sector capacity to meet population health needs. While external brain drain from low and middle-income countries is well described, there is little understanding of the degree of internal brain drain, and how increases in health sector funding through global health initiatives may contribute to the outflow of health workers from the public sector to donor agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the private sector.

Methods

An observational study was conducted to estimate the degree of internal and external brain drain among Mozambican nationals qualifying from domestic and foreign medical schools between 1980–2006. Data were collected 26-months apart in 2008 and 2010, and included current employment status, employer, geographic location of employment, and main work duties.

Results

Of 723 qualifying physicians between 1980–2006, 95.9% (693) were working full-time, including 71.1% (493) as clinicians, 20.5% (142) as health system managers, and 6.9% (48) as researchers/professors. 25.5% (181) of the sample had left the public sector, of which 62.4% (113) continued working in-country and 37.6% (68) emigrated from Mozambique. Of those cases of internal migration, 66.4% (75) worked for NGOs, 21.2% (24) for donor agencies, and 12.4% (14) in the private sector. Annual incidence of physician migration was estimated to be 3.7%, predominately to work in the growing NGO sector. An estimated 36.3% (41/113) of internal migration cases had previously held senior-level management positions in the public sector.

Discussion

Internal migration is an important contributor to capital flight from the public sector, accounting for more cases of physician loss than external migration in Mozambique. Given the urgent need to strengthen public sector health systems, frank reflection by donors and NGOs is needed to assess how hiring practices may undermine the very systems they seek to strengthen.  相似文献

Direct evidence for a systematic occupation of the African tropics during the early late Pleistocene is lacking. Here, we report a record of human occupation between 105-42 ka, based on results from a radiometrically-dated cave section from the Mozambican segment of the Niassa (Malawi/Nyasa) Rift called Ngalue. The sedimentary sequence from bottom to top has five units. We concentrate on the so-called “Middle Beds,” which contain a Middle Stone Age industry characterized by the use of the discoidal reduction technique. A significant typological feature is the presence of formal types such as points, scrapers, awls, and microliths. Special objects consist of grinders/core-axes covered by ochre. Ngalue is one of the few directly-dated Pleistocene sites located along the biogeographical corridor for modern human dispersals that links east, central, and southern Africa, and, with further study, may shed new light on hominin cave habitats during the late Pleistocene.  相似文献

Socially subordinate rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) experience chronic stress that impacts upon a variety of physiological functions, including Na(+) regulation. Owing to the tight coupling between Na(+) and Cl(-) uptake and, respectively, H(+) and HCO(3)(-) loss at the gill, ionoregulatory changes associated with social status may affect acid-base regulation. The present study assessed the responses of dominant, subordinate and control trout to hypercapnia (1% CO(2)) to test this hypothesis. Social status appeared to impact net acid excretion (J(net)H(+)) as subordinate individuals failed to increase net acid flux in response to hypercapnia. However, blood acid-base status was found to be unaffected by social status before or during hypercapnic exposure, indicating that subordinate fish were as effective as dominant or control trout in achieving compensation for the acid-base disturbance induced by hypercapnic exposure. Compensation in all groups involved decreasing Cl(-) uptake in response to hypercapnia. The branchial activities of both Na(+),K(+)-ATPase (NKA) and V-type H(+)-ATPase were affected by social interactions and/or exposure to hypercapnia. Branchial NKA activity was higher but V-ATPase activity was lower in control fish than in dominant or subordinate trout. In addition, control and subordinate but not dominant trout exposed to 24h of hypercapnia exhibited significantly higher branchial V-ATPase activity than fish maintained in normocapnia. Collectively, the data suggest that subordinate trout are able to regulate blood pH during a respiratory acidosis.  相似文献

The thymidine kinase locus (tk) has been utilised as the target locus to measure the induced mutation frequency following X-irradiation in the X-ray-sensitive xrs5 mutant and its parent CHO K1 line of Chinese hamster cells. Mutations to tk- cells were measured by plating cells in selective medium containing trifluorothymidine after a post-irradiation expression time of 4 days. Our results show that the mutation frequency was 3-4 times higher in the xrs5 mutant than in the CHO K1 cell line. This enhanced mutation frequency in xrs5 is though to result from the deficiency in DNA double-strand break repair in this cell line which also results in the enhanced cell killing and higher frequencies of chromosomal aberrations in response to X-irradiation. The findings of the present study suggest that DNA double-strand break is a critical lesion leading to mutations in irradiated cells.  相似文献

Pristine marine environments are highly oligotrophic ecosystems populated by well-established specialized microbial communities. Nevertheless, during oil spills, low-abundant hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria bloom and rapidly prevail over the marine microbiota. The genus Alcanivorax is one of the most abundant and well-studied organisms for oil degradation. While highly successful under polluted conditions due to its specialized oil-degrading metabolism, it is unknown how they persist in these environments during pristine conditions. Here, we show that part of the Alcanivorax genus, as well as oils, has an enormous potential for biodegrading aliphatic polyesters thanks to a unique and abundantly secreted alpha/beta hydrolase. The heterologous overexpression of this esterase proved a remarkable ability to hydrolyse both natural and synthetic polyesters. Our findings contribute to (i) better understand the ecology of Alcanivorax in its natural environment, where natural polyesters such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are produced by a large fraction of the community and, hence, an accessible source of carbon and energy used by the organism in order to persist, (ii) highlight the potential of Alcanivorax to clear marine environments from polyester materials of anthropogenic origin as well as oils, and (iii) the discovery of a new versatile esterase with a high biotechnological potential.  相似文献
