Summary Silicon during the early vegetative stage did not affect the oven dry weight of any of the various tissues of the soybean plant. Silicon did, however, decrease the Mn concentration in the youngest fully mature leaf at intermediate levels of Mn. This effect did not occur at the lowest or highest Mn levels. The local anesthetic tetracaine blocked all of these measured responses to carbachol, but none of the responses to substance P. Tetracaine must act at either the cholinergic receptor or at a subsequent transducing step in the cholinergic stimulus-response sequence. Phosphorus (P) concentrations in water and sediment of a highly eutrophic lake were monitored before and after application of diquat to control the macrophyte Potamogeton crispus. Only a relatively small and short-term increase in P concentration in water occurred shortly after plant die-off resulting from herbicide application. Phosphorus concentrations in shallow water sediments decreased during the summer, and those in deep water sediments increased. Although a large increase in P concentration in the water occurred in late summer, it was not attributed to diquat. The resolution of policy questions relating to medical genetic screening programs will not be without considerable difficulty. Examples include such issues as the optimal degree of screening program expansion, the relative values of screening for different genetic diseases, the appropriate sources of program funding (public vs. private), and the relative value of funding expanded genetic screening programs vs. research directed toward elimination of genetic traits themselves. Information on the net impact of the relevant alternatives is greatly needed, and this need will increase if the National Genetics Act receives funding approval. We have provided what is hopefully a contribution toward this end. While our analysis pertains to a specific disease and a specific screening program for that disease, the methodology is readily generalizable to other genetic diseases, as well as programs of any size or structure. Sera from 54 pairs of identical twins, 29 discordant and 25 concordant for insulin-dependent diabetes, and 11 pairs of concordant non-insulin dependent identical twins were examined for pancreatic islet-cell antibodies (ICAs). ICAs were found in 10 of the 29 diabetic discordant and eight of the 50 concordant twins (difference not significant P greater than 0-05). Six out of nine twins tested within one year of onset of diabetes were positive, whereas nine out of 29 tested after one to 10 years and three out of 41 tested after 10 years were positive. Only one of the 22 non-insulin-dependent twins had ICAs. Repeat ICA testing in five pair of insulin-dependent twins and in the siblings of one pair showed that ICAs may be present in people with normal glucose tolerance'' may precede clinical diabetes by several years; and may decline in titre or disappear with increasing duration of disease. Thyroid or gastric autoantibodies, or both, were found in 36 out of 108 insulin-dependent twins and three out of 22 non-insulin dependent twins (difference not significant P less than 0-05). Only four twins had both ICAs and thyrogastric antibodies. There were no significant associations between autoantibodies and HLA histocompatibility types. As ICAs are more common in the diabetic than the non-diabetic twins of the discordant pairs they must be associated with juvenile onset diabetes. ICAs may appear some years before the onset of diabetes, but their prevalence declines with increasing duration of diabetes. The potential drop across a membrane is calculated for the case of ionizable groups on both membrane surfaces. The presence of both acid and amine groups on the membrane surfaces is considered. The membrane surface potential is obtained from the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation by treating the fraction of dissociated ionizable surface groups as a self-consistent functional of the electrostatic potential. A discussion of the error due to ignoring the electrostatic coupling of the potential across the membrane is presented. The error turns out to be quite small for most membrane problems of biological interest. Finally, the conductance data of Mozhayeva & Naumov (1970) for the frog node are reanalyzed within the context of the diffuse double layer theory. Uptake of orthophosphate and deposition of condensed phosphate were investigated in cells of Synechococcus sp. (Anacystis nidulans) deficient in phosphorus or sulfur. When phosphorus was restored to phosphorus-starved cells, uptake was rapid and immediate, with the greatest accumulation occurring within the first hour. Uptake was optimum in the pH 7.5–8.5 range. Long-term (6-day) studies of uptake and deposition with cells exposed to a wide range of sulfur deficiency showed that both processes were greatest when the level of exogenous sulfur was reduced to zero. The increase in cellular phosphorus as determined chemically was in agreement with the increased number and size of polyphosphate bodies at the ultrastructural level. Possible mechanisms for the control of phosphorus uptake and condensed phosphate formation by exogenous sulfur are discussed. 相似文献
