Maize (Zea mays L.) tortilla is the major staple food for the Mexican population. Nine tropical maize genotypes were evaluated. All samples had white grains, a common characteristic in tropical maize, and therefore they were appropriate for nixtamalized flour industry. Grain, flour, masa and tortilla characteristics of each maize genotype were evaluated. Length, width, thickness, weight of 1000 grains and hardness of grain were determined. Moisture content, proteins, fat, ash, mean particle size, water absorption index, enthalpy, and flour temperature were also evaluated. Adhesiveness and cohesiveness were evaluated in masa. Moisture content, protein, capacity to puff up, roll making, tension and cutting strength were determined in tortillas. There were significant differences (p≤0.05) in most of the evaluated characteristics. Grain length values varied between 9.26 and 11.02 mm for populations 23 and 22, respectively. Grain hardness oscillated between 11.17 (population 32) and 14.75 (landrace Mejen). According to the weight of 1000 grains most genotypes had small grains. The minimum and maximum moisture values of flour and tortillas were 8.33-9.99% and 46.20-50.36%, respectively. The texture of tortillas elaborated from population 32 and landrace Mejen had the lowest tension and cutting strength, resulting the best genotypes for making tortilla.  相似文献

Discriminating among individuals and rejecting non-group members is essential for the evolution and stability of animal societies. Ants are good models for studying recognition mechanisms, because they are typically very efficient in discriminating ‘friends’ (nest-mates) from ‘foes’ (non-nest-mates). Recognition in ants involves multicomponent cues encoded in cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. Here, we tested whether workers of the carpenter ant Camponotus herculeanus use the presence and/or absence of cuticular hydrocarbons to discriminate between nest-mates and non-nest-mates. We supplemented the cuticular profile with synthetic hydrocarbons mixed to liquid food and then assessed behavioural responses using two different bioassays. Our results show that (i) the presence, but not the absence, of an additional hydrocarbon elicited aggression and that (ii) among the three classes of hydrocarbons tested (unbranched, mono-methylated and dimethylated alkanes; for mono-methylated alkanes, we present a new synthetic pathway), only the dimethylated alkane was effective in eliciting aggression. Our results suggest that carpenter ants use a fundamentally different mechanism for nest-mate recognition than previously thought. They do not specifically recognize nest-mates, but rather recognize and reject non-nest-mates bearing odour cues that are novel to their own colony cuticular hydrocarbon profile. This begs for a reappraisal of the mechanisms underlying recognition systems in social insects.  相似文献

Background  

The mosquito A. aegypti is vector of dengue and other viruses. New methods of vector control are needed and can be achieved by a better understanding of the life cycle of this insect. Embryogenesis is a part of A. aegypty life cycle that is poorly understood. In insects in general and in mosquitoes in particular energetic metabolism is well studied during oogenesis, when the oocyte exhibits fast growth, accumulating carbohydrates, lipids and proteins that will meet the regulatory and metabolic needs of the developing embryo. On the other hand, events related with energetic metabolism during A. aegypti embryogenesis are unknown.  相似文献

目的 制备一种新型的心肌急性缺血再灌注损伤模型,以探讨一种更符合临床实际需求的实验方法.方法 将20只雌性SD(Sprague-Dawley)大鼠随机分成2组(对照组、实验组),采用结扎主动脉根部引起心肌缺血5min再灌注30 min建立心肌急性缺血再灌注模型;通过应用透射电镜观察心肌细胞超微结构的改变,同时检测心肌组织匀浆丙二醛(Maleic Dialdehyde,MDA)含量、超氧化物歧化酶(Superoxide Dismutase,SOD)活力.结果 透射电镜下超微结构显示实验组较对照组明显加重了心肌组织结构和线粒体的损害;实验组心肌组织MDA明显高于对照组(P<0.01),而SOD明显低于对照组(P<0.01).结论 本实验成功建立了方法简便、易于操作、取材范围广泛的心肌缺血再灌注损伤模型,为心肌缺血再灌注损伤研究提供了一种更为可行的模型.  相似文献

The SNARE complex, consisting of synaptobrevin, syntaxin, and SNAP-25, is essential for calcium-triggered exocytosis in neurosecretory cells. Little is known, however, about how developmentally regulated isoforms and other cognate SNARE components regulate vesicular fusion. To address this question, we examined neuroexocytosis from chromaffin cells of Snap25 null mice rescued by the two splice variants SNAP-25a and SNAP-25b and the ubiquitously expressed homolog SNAP-23. In the absence of SNAP-25, vesicle docking persisted, but primed vesicle pools were empty and fast calcium-triggered release abolished. Single vesicular fusion events showed normal characteristics, except for a shorter duration of the fusion pore. Overexpression of SNAP-25a, SNAP-25b, and SNAP-23 resulted in three distinct phenotypes; SNAP-25b induced larger primed vesicle pools than SNAP-25a, whereas SNAP-23 did not support a standing pool of primed vesicles. We conclude that three alternative SNARE components support exocytosis, but they differ in their ability to stabilize vesicles in the primed state.  相似文献

The prevalence of infection and susceptibility of the aquatic oligochaete Tubifex tubifex to Myxobolus cerebralis, was examined in 2 studies on the upper Colorado River, Colorado, USA, where whirling disease occurs in wild trout populations. In the first study, the prevalence of infection ranged from 0.4 to 1.5%, as determined by counting the number of T. tubifex releasing triactinomyxons of M. cerebralis directly following their collection from the field. The susceptibility of those T. tubifex not releasing triactinomyxons was assessed by the number of these oligochaetes releasing triactinomyxons 3 mo following experimental exposures to spores of M. cerebralis. The prevalence of infection following experimental exposures of these T. tubifex ranged from 4.2 to 14.1%. In a second study, all T. tubifex collected at 2 different times directly from the 2 field sites in Colorado were exposed to spores of M. cerebralis. Individual oligochaetes representing those groups of T. tubifex releasing and those groups not releasing triactinomyxons at 3 mo were screened with molecular genetic markers. T. tubifex populations found at the 2 study sites consisted of 4 genetically distinct lineages that varied with respect to their susceptibility to experimental exposure to M. cerebralis. Lineages I and III contained the most oligochaetes susceptible to M. cerebralis and were the most prominent lineages at Windy Gap Reservoir, a site of high infectivity for wild rainbow trout on the upper Colorado River. In contrast, at the Breeze Bridge site which is below Windy Gap Reservoir and where M. cerebralis infections are less severe in wild trout, oligochaetes in lineages V and VI that are resistant to M. cerebralis were more prominent. These results suggest that certain habitats, such as Windy Gap Reservoir, are conducive to large and more homogenous populations of susceptible T. tubifex lineages that may serve as point sources of infection for M. cerebralis. Although not a direct objective of this study, there was no evidence of M. cerebralis infections among any oligochaetes other than those that would be classified as T. tubifex by standard morphological characteristics.  相似文献

Chondrocyte pellets were cultivated in a perfused flow chamber and supplied with medium by a constant flow rate from a conditioning vessel. In this conditioning vessel the medium was aerated and used medium was exchanged semi-continuously. The higher amount of DNA and glycosaminoglycane (GAG) in these pellets compared to control cultures under stationary conditions showed a positive effect of the reactor system, compared to standard culture conditions. A diffusion reaction model was applied to calculate the oxygen uptake of the cell pellet and to describe the oxygen profile within the pellet. The model included diffusion within the cell pellet and oxygen uptake of the cells. Calculated data were compared to experimental data obtained by tissue engineered chondrocyte cell pellets.
