Background:The association of 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) and its receptor, vitamin D receptor (VDR), with cancer types have been studied. However, there are controversial findings regarding the association of specific VDR polymorphisms with different kinds of cancers. In the current study, we investigated the association of VDR polymorphisms (Fok1 (rs2228570), ApaI (rs7975232), BsmI (rs1544410), and TaqI (rs731236)) with the risk of gastric cancer in a Kurdish population of Kermanshah in Iran for the first time. Methods:In this case-control study, the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used in 99 gastric cancer patients and 100 healthy subjects as controls.Results:The frequencies of f (FokI), b (BsmI), t (TaqI), and a (ApaI) alleles were: 55.6%, 27.3%, 62.1%, and 44.95% in the patient group, respectively and 42%, 29.5%, 54.5%, and 46.0% in the control group, respectively. Analysis of the results indicated that there was a positive association between the frequency of FokI genotypes with gastric cancer risk (p= 0.021). However, no statistically significant association of BsmI, Taq1, and ApaI polymorphisms of VDR was detected in gastric patients when compared with healthy individuals.Conclusion:VDR-FokI polymorphism could increase the risk of GC development and predispose to the disease by mechanisms.Key Words: Gastric cancer, PCR-RFLP, Polymorphism, Vitamin D receptor  相似文献

Aim Extinction risk is non‐randomly distributed across phylogeny and space and is influenced by environmental conditions. We quantified the relative contribution of these factors to extinction risk to unveil the underlying macroecological processes and derive predictive models. Location Global. Methods Based on the IUCN global assessments, we divided 192 carnivore species into two dichotomous classes representing different levels of extinction risk. We used spatial proximity, phylogenetic relationship and environmental variables together with phylogenetic eigenvector regression and spatial eigenvector filters to model and predict threat status. Results Our full models explained between 57% and 96% of the variance in extinction risk. Phylogeny and spatial proximity roughly explained between 21% and 70% of the total variation in all analyses, while the explanatory power of environmental conditions was relatively weaker (up to 15%). Phylogeny and spatial proximity contributed equally to the explained variance in the lower threat level, while spatial proximity was the most important factor in the models of the higher threat level. Prediction of threat status achieved 97% correct assignments. Main conclusions Our approach differs fundamentally from current studies of extinction risk because it does not necessarily rely on life‐history information. We clearly show that instead of treating phylogenetic inertia and spatial signal as statistical nuisances, space and phylogeny should be viewed as very useful in explaining a wide range of phenomena in comparative studies.  相似文献

Abstract

Exceptionally well-preserved fossils are frequently encased by carbonate concretions. The initial steps of their formation in marine and freshwater sediments are induced by microbial activity. The role of the involved microbial communities, however, is not well understood. In this study, siderite (FeCO3) formation in microbial microcosms is observed, with various fatty acyl compounds (lipids, surfactants) as substrates and Wadden Sea sediment samples as inocula. In actively growing microcosms, sulfate-reducing bacteria (the genus Desulfofrigus in particular) dominate the microbial community and submicroscopic siderite precipitates on bacterial cell surfaces were identified. We suggest that these biologically induced mineralization processes may, in the natural environment, initiate the formation of large concretions under suboxic conditions in coastal sediments.  相似文献

NMDA receptors are among the crucial elements of central nervous system models. Recent studies show that both conductance and kinetics of these receptors are changing voltage-dependently in some parts of the brain. Therefore, several models have been introduced to simulate their current. However, on the one hand, kinetic models—which are able to simulate these voltage-dependent phenomena—are computationally expensive for modeling of large neural networks. On the other hand, classic exponential models, which are computationally less expensive, are not able to simulate the voltage-dependency of these receptors, accurately. In this study, we have modified these classic models to endow them with the voltage-dependent conductance and time constants. Temperature sensitivity and desensitization of these receptors are also taken into account. We show that, it is possible to simulate the most important physiological aspects of NMDA receptor’s behavior using only three to four differential equations, which is significantly smaller than the previous kinetic models. Consequently, it seems that our model is both fast and physiologically plausible and therefore is a suitable candidate for the modeling of large neural networks.  相似文献

Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) are habitat-forming species in coastal ecosystems and include kelp forests and seaweed beds that support a wide diversity of marine life. Host-associated microbial communities are an integral part of phaeophyte biology, and whereas the bacterial microbial partners have received considerable attention, the microbial eukaryotes associated with brown algae have hardly been studied. Here, we used broadly targeted “pan-eukaryotic” primers (metabarcoding) to investigate brown algal-associated eukaryotes (the eukaryome). Using this approach, we aimed to investigate the eukaryome of seven large brown algae that are important and common species in coastal ecosystems. We also aimed to assess whether these macroalgae harbor novel eukaryotic diversity and to ascribe putative functional roles to the host-associated eukaryome based on taxonomic affiliation and phylogenetic placement. We detected a significant diversity of microeukaryotic and algal lineages associated with the brown algal species investigated. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were taxonomically assigned to 10 of the eukaryotic major supergroups, including taxonomic groups known to be associated with seaweeds as epibionts, endobionts, parasites, and commensals. Additionally, we revealed previously unrecorded sequence types, including novel phaeophyte OTUs, particularly in the Fucus spp. samples, that may represent fucoid genomic variants, sequencing artifacts, or undescribed epi-/endophytes. Our results provide baseline data and technical insights that will be useful for more comprehensive seaweed eukaryome studies investigating the evidently lineage-rich and functionally diverse symbionts of brown algae.  相似文献

Primary non-Hodgkin's CNS lymphoma is rare, constituting 0.3–1.5% of all intracranial neoplasms in patients without AIDS. In the past 10 years the incidence has tripled in this population. The role of surgery is commonly limited to obtaining adequate tissue for diagnosis. This has precluded the evaluation of total surgical resection for a surgically accessible solitary lesion. We have encountered a 36-year-old healthy white male with primary CNS lymphoma who is HIV-negative and who has survived over five years disease free after total surgical resection of his lymphoma.  相似文献
