Surface modification of silk fibroin (SF) materials using environmentally friendly and non‐hazardous process to tailor them for specific application as biomaterials has drawn a great deal of interest in the field of biomedical research. To further explore this area of research, in this report, polypropylene (PP) grafted muga (Antheraea assama) SF (PP‐AASF) suture is developed using plasma treatment and plasma graft polymerization process. For this purpose, AASF is first sterilized in argon (Ar) plasma treatment followed by grafting PP onto its surface. AASF is a non‐mulberry variety having superior qualities to mulberry SF and is still unexplored in the context of suture biomaterial. AASF, Ar plasma treated AASF (AASFAr) and PP‐AASF are subjected to various characterization techniques for better comparison and the results are attempted to correlate with their observed properties. Excellent mechanical strength, hydrophobicity, antibacterial behavior, and remarkable wound healing activity of PP‐AASF over AASF and AASFAr make it a promising candidate for application as sterilized suture biomaterial. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A bacterial strain designated as BPM3 isolated from mud of a natural hot water spring of Nambar Wild Life Sanctuary, Assam, India, strongly inhibited growth of phytopathogenic fungi (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri, F. semitectum, Magnaporthe grisea and Rhizoctonia oryzae) and gram-positive bacterium (Staphylococcus aureus). The maximum growth and antagonistic activity was recorded at 30 °C, pH 8.5 when starch and peptone were amended as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. In greenhouse experiment, this bacterium (BPM3) suppressed blast disease of rice by 30-67% and protected the weight loss by 35-56.5%. The maximum disease protection (67%) and weight loss protection (56.5%) were recorded when the bacterium was applied before 2 days of the pathogen inoculation. Antifungal and antibacterial compounds were isolated from the bacterium which also inhibited the growth of these targeted pathogens. The compounds were purified and on spectroscopic analysis of a purified fraction having Rf 0.22 which showed strong antifungal and antibacterial activity indicated the presence of C-H, carbonyl group, dimethyl group, -CH2 and methyl group. The bacterium was characterized by morphological, biochemical and molecular approaches and confirmed that the strain BPM3 is Brevibacillus laterosporus.  相似文献

We determined the fatty acid compositions of six species of freshwater microalgae belonging to the Chlorophyta, which were isolated from freshwater bodies in Assam, India. All six microalgae -Desmodesmus sp. DRLMA7, Desmodesmus elegans DRLMA13, Scenedesmus sp. DRLMA5, Scenedesmus sp. DRLMA9 Chlorella sp. DRLMA3 and Chlorococcum macrostigmatum DRLMA12-showed similar fatty acid profiles 16:0, 16:4, 18:1, 18:2, and 18:3 as major components. We also compared fatty acid compositions during the late exponential and stationary growth phases of D. elegans DRLMA13 and Scenedesmus sp. DRLMA9 in BG11 medium. We observed enhanced percentages of total saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids with a concomitant decrease in polyunsaturated fatty acid content upon the prolonged cultivation of both microalgae. Distinct morphological features of microalgal isolates were determined by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies. An ornamented cell wall was found in D. elegans DRLMA13, which is characteristic of small spineless species of Desmodesmus. The isolated microalgae were further distinguished through analysis of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) secondary structures and compensatory base changes (CBCs). Analysis of CBCs showed the relatedness of Chlorella sp. DRLMA3 with other Chlorella-like organisms, but it does not belong to the clade comprising Chlorella sensu stricto, which includes Chlorella vulgaris. The CBC count between Scenedesmus sp. DRLMA9 and other species of Scenedesmus provides evidence that this isolate represents a new species.  相似文献

Aims: Present report describes the in vitro antimalarial activity and docking analysis of seven 4‐aminoquinoline‐clubbed 1,3,5‐triazine derivatives on pf‐DHFR‐TS. Methods and Results: The antimalarial activity was evaluated in vitro against chloroquine‐sensitive 3D7 strain of Plasmodium falciparum. Compounds were docked onto the active site of pf‐DHFR‐TS using docking server to explicate necessary structural requirements for antimalarial activity. Conclusion: Title molecules demonstrated considerable bioactivity against the malaria parasite. Docking analysis revealed deep engulfment of the molecules into the inner groove of pf‐DHFR‐TS active site by making stable ligand–receptor posses. Hydrophobic interaction was identified as the only major interacting force playing a role between ligand–receptor interaction and minor with hydrogen bonds. Signi?cance and Impact of the study: The study provided the novel insight into the necessary structural requirement for rationale‐based antimalarial drug discovery.  相似文献

The northeast region of India, considered as 'hot spot' of biodiversity, having unique ecological environment with hot and high-humidity conditions, has given rise to the world's hottest chilli, 'Bhut Jolokia', which is at least two times hotter than Red Savina Habanero in terms of Scoville heat units (SHU). This study was undertaken to determine the distinctiveness of 'Bhut Jolokia' from Capsicum frutescens or Capsicum chinense through sequencing of the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene-internal transcribed ((ITS) region along with its phylogenetic analysis. Although a compensatory base change (CBC) in the ITS2 region was not observed between the closely related species of C. frutescens and C. chinense when compared with Bhut Jolokia; phylogenetic analysis using ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2 sequences indicated a distinct clade for all the accessions of 'Bhut Joloikia', while C. frutescens and C. chinense occupied discrete lineages. Further, a unique 13-base deletion was observed in all the representative accessions of 'Bhut Jolokia', making it distinct from all other members within the genus and beyond. The degree of genetic variations along with its extreme pungency might be related to ambient environmental factors of northeastern India.  相似文献

BackgroundHigh prevalence, severity, and formidable morbidity have marked the recent emergence of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The significant association with the pre-existing co-morbid conditions has increased the disease burden of this global health emergency, pushing the patients, healthcare workers and facilities to the verge of complete disruption.MethodsMeta-analysis of pooled data was undertaken to assess the cumulative risk assessment of multiple co-morbid conditions associated with severe COVID-19. PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched from January 1st to June 27th 2020 to generate a well-ordered, analytical, and critical review. The exercise began with keying in requisite keywords, followed by inclusion and exclusion criteria, data extraction, and quality evaluation. The final statistical meta-analysis of the risk factors of critical/severe and non-critical COVID-19 infection was carried out on Microsoft Excel (Ver. 2013), MedCalc (Ver.19.3), and RevMan software (Ver.5.3).ResultsWe investigated 19 eligible studies, comprising 12037 COVID-19 disease patients, representing the People’s Republic of China (PRC), USA, and Europe. 18.2% (n = 2200) of total patients had critical/severe COVID-19 disease. The pooled analysis showed a significant association of COVID-19 disease severity risk with cardiovascular disease (RR: 3.11, p < 0.001), followed by diabetes (RR: 2.06, p < 0.001), hypertension (RR: 1.54, p < 0.001), and smoking (RR: 1.52, p < 006).ConclusionThe review involved a sample size of 12037 COVID-19 patients across a wide geographical distribution. The reviewed reports have focussed on the association of individual risk assessment of co-morbid conditions with the heightened risk of COVID-19 disease. The present meta-analysis of cumulative risk assessment of co-morbidity from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and smoking signals a novel interpretation of inherent risk factors exacerbating COVID-19 disease severity. Consequently, there exists a definite window of opportunity for increasing survival of COVID-19 patients (with high risk and co-morbid conditions) by timely identification and implementation of appropriately suitable treatment modalities.  相似文献

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) regulate cell fate during development and mediate cancer progression. In this study, we investigated the role of BMP4 in proliferation, anoikis resistance, metastatic migration, and drug resistance of breast cancer cells. We utilized breast cancer cell lines and clinical samples representing different subtypes to understand the functional effect of BMP4 on breast cancer. The BMP pathway was inhibited with the small molecule inhibitor LDN193189 hydrochloride (LDN). BMP4 signaling enhanced the expression of stem cell genes CD44, ALDH1A3, anti-apoptotic gene BCL2 and promoted anoikis resistance in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. BMP4 enhanced self-renewal and chemoresistance in MDA-MB-231 by upregulating Notch signaling while LDN treatment abrogated anoikis resistance and proliferation of anoikis resistant breast cancer cells in the osteogenic microenvironment. Conversely, BMP4 downregulated proliferation, colony-forming ability, and suppressed anoikis resistance in MCF7 and SkBR3 cells, while LDN treatment promoted tumor spheroid formation and growth. These findings indicate that BMP4 has a context-dependent role in breast cancer. Further, our data with MDA-MB-231 cells representing triple-negative breast cancer suggest that BMP inhibition might impair its metastatic spread and colonization.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12079-021-00649-9.  相似文献
