This study tested the hypothesis that lake augmentation with well water impacts the distribution and abundance of aquatic plants in lakes. Water chemistry was measured from 14 wells, 14 augmented lakes, and 14 lakes without augmentation. Nine in-lake aquatic macrophyte abundance and species distribution metrics were measured in all lakes. Net photosynthetic rate (NPR) of nine submersed species was also measured in well and lake water. Augmentation increased alkalinity in receiving lakes, but total phosphorus was significantly lower, which resulted in lower chlorophyll and greater Secchi depths. Although measured NPR was higher for all plants incubated in well water, only one (emergent species richness) in-lake aquatic macrophyte metric was different in lakes with and without augmentation. Lake augmentation significantly changed water chemistry of receiving waters, but effects on aquatic macrophytes were minimal, suggesting that other environmental factors are limiting the distribution and abundance of macrophytes in the study lakes. The lower phosphorus levels in augmented lakes were unexpected because phosphorus concentrations in well water were significantly greater than in lakes with or without augmentation. Precipitation of calcium phosphate likely accounts for the reduced phosphorus levels in augmented lakes.  相似文献

With no further intervention, relapse rates in detoxified alcoholics are high and usually exceed 80% of all detoxified patients. It has been suggested that stress and exposure to priming doses of alcohol and to alcohol-associated stimuli (cues) contribute to the relapse risk after detoxification. This article focuses on neuronal correlates of cue responses in detoxified alcoholics. Current brain imaging studies indicate that dysfunction of dopaminergic, glutamatergic and opioidergic neurotransmission in the brain reward system (ventral striatum including the nucleus accumbens) can be associated with alcohol craving and functional brain activation in neuronal systems that process attentional relevant stimuli, reward expectancy and experience. Increased functional brain activation elicited by such alcohol-associated cues predicted an increased relapse risk, whereas high brain activity elicited by affectively positive stimuli may represent a protective factor and was correlated with a decreased prospective relapse risk. These findings are discussed with respect to psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatment options.  相似文献

In the aquatically mating harbour seal, Phoca vitulina, oestrous females show marked differences in spatial and temporal distribution between geographical areas. This suggests that the males' display behaviour may also vary between areas. We recorded male vocalizations in two areas, the Moray Firth and Orkney, U.K. In the Moray Firth, females haul out on a few intertidal sandbars and travel along predictable routes to forage at sea. In Orkney, female haul out sites are much less influenced by tidal availability and females are much more dispersed. In the Moray Firth, males vocalized only during a short mating season, from 1 July to 12 August. Vocalizations varied significantly with the tide, the peak at high tide clearly coinciding with the period when most females were in the water. In contrast, vocalizations in Orkney were significantly related to both tidal and diel patterns. We suggest that the timing of male vocalizations reflects differences in female availability between sites. In the inner Moray Firth, vocalizations were heard throughout the females' range, whereas vocalizations in Orkney were heard only in two discrete areas. However, at both sites the density of vocalizing males was highest in narrow channels and/or along predictable female travel routes. Therefore, males clearly adapt their temporal and spatial behaviour patterns to variations in female distribution and density. These results suggest that male mating strategies in aquatically mating pinnipeds are more variable than was previously envisaged. Redox-active metal ions such as Fe(II)\(III) and Cu(I)\(II) have been proposed to activate reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) and thus, perpetuate oxidative damage. Here, we show that concentrations of metal ions and EDTA complexes with superoxide-destroying activities equivalent to 1 U SOD are Fe(III) 5.1 microM, Mn(II) 0.77 microM, Cu(II)-EDTA 3.55 microM, Fe(III)-EDTA 2.34 microM, and Mn(II)-EDTA 1.38 microM. The most active being the aquated Cu(II) species which exhibited superoxide-destroying activity equivalent to 2U of SOD at 0.29 microM. Hydrogen peroxide-destroying activities were as follows Fe(III)-EDTA ca. 70 U/mg and aquated Fe(III) 141 U/mg. In contrast, DTPA prevented superoxide-destroying activity and significantly depleted hydrogen peroxide-destroying activity. In conclusion, non-protein bound transition metal ions may have significant anti-oxidant effects in biological systems. Caution should be employed in bioassays when chelating metal ions. Our results demonstrate that DTPA is preferential to EDTA for inactivating redox-active metal ions in bioassays.  相似文献

Metal ion chelators widely used in experimental protocols and clinical diagnosis are generally assumed to be inert. We previously reported that the ubiquitous chelator EDTA has high levels of superoxide suppressing activity. Here, we report that the common chelators calcium chelator EGTA and contrast agent EHPG have significant activities in suppressing superoxide levels depending on the nature of metal ion chelated. The most active species is Mn(II)-EGTA which exhibited an IC50 value of 0.19 microM for superoxide destruction. In addition, IC50 values for Mn(II)-EHPG and 2Cu(II)-EGTA were 0.69 and 0.60 microM, respectively. In conclusion, Mn(II) and Cu(II) complexes of the common chelators EGTA and EHPG exhibit considerable superoxide scavenging activities. Caution should be employed in their use in biological systems where superoxide has a key role and they may be useful for the development of catalytic anti-oxidants.  相似文献

A two-by-two factorial experiment with pigs was conducted to study the effect of feed grinding (fine and coarse) and feed processing (pelleted and nonpelleted) on physicochemical properties, microbial populations, and survival of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium DT12 in the gastrointestinal tracts of pigs. Results demonstrated a strong effect of diet on parameters measured in the stomachs of the pigs, whereas the effect was less in the other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Pigs fed the coarse nonpelleted (C-NP) diet showed more solid gastric content with higher dry matter content than pigs fed the fine nonpelleted (F-NP), coarse pelleted (C-P), or fine pelleted (F-P) diet. Pigs fed the C-NP diet also showed significantly increased number of anaerobic bacteria (P < 0.05), increased concentrations of organic acids, and reduced pH in the stomach. In addition, pigs fed the C-NP diet showed increased in vitro death rate of S. enterica serovar Typhimurium DT12 in content from the stomach (P < 0.001). Pigs fed the C-NP diet had a significantly higher concentration of undissociated lactic acid in gastric content than pigs fed the other diets (P < 0.001). A strong correlation between the concentration of undissociated lactic acid and the death rate of S. enterica serovar Typhimurium DT12 was found. In the distal small intestine, cecum, and midcolon, significantly lower numbers of coliform bacteria were observed in pigs fed the coarse diets than in pigs fed the fine diets (P < 0.01). Pigs fed the C-NP diet showed the lowest number of coliform bacteria in these segments of the gastrointestinal tract. Pigs fed the coarse diets showed increased concentration of butyric acid in the cecum (P < 0.05) and colon (P < 0.10) compared with pigs fed the fine diets. It was concluded that feeding a coarsely ground meal feed to pigs changes the physicochemical and microbial properties of content in the stomach, which decreases the survival of Salmonella during passage through the stomach. In this way the stomach acts as a barrier preventing harmful bacteria from entering and proliferating in the lower part of the gastrointestinal tract.  相似文献
