Seven varieties of bred wheat and seven varieties of durum wheat were cultivated in three different sites from the area of Errachidia (southeastern Morocco). These sites differ by the degree of salinity in the irrigation water. Results obtained showed that the reduction in leaf area is the principal strategy that makes it possible to attenuate the effects of the reduction in the availability of water under saline stress. Bread wheat, which limited the reduction in the leaf area, with the risk to undergo some hydrous problems, seems to better preserve its photosynthetic potentialities and grain productivity.  相似文献

Despite the obvious benefit of an immune system, its efficacy against pathogens and parasites may show great variation among individuals, populations and species. Understanding the causes of this variation is becoming a central theme in ecology. Many biotic and abiotic factors are known to influence immunocompetence (temperature, age, etc.). However, for a given age, size among individuals varies, probably as a result of accumulated resources. Thus, these variable resources could be allocated to immune defence and, consequently, body size may explain part of the variation in immune responsiveness. However, the influence of body size on immune defence is often overlooked. The present study investigates variations in haemocyte count and phenoloxidase activity in larvae of the phytophagous vine moth Eupoecilia ambiguella Hübner of the same age, although differing in body size. The measurements of immune function are made both when the insects are immunologically naïve and 24 h after a bacterial immune challenge. The base levels of these immune parameters do not covary with body size in naïve larvae. After the bacterial immune challenge, more haemocytes and phenoloxidase enzyme are mobilized, and the mobilization of these immune effectors is correlated positively with individual body size. Thus, larger larvae exhibit higher immunocompetence than smaller ones, suggesting that smaller larvae might be more vulnerable to infection. These results suggest that body size is probably an underestimated variable, which nevertheless modulates the insect immune system and should thus be considered as a covariate in insect immune system measurement. It is recommended therefore, that body size should be taken into account in ecological immunity studies with insects. © 2013 The Royal Entomological Society  相似文献

Background and Aims The S-locus receptor kinase (SRK), which is expressed in stigma epidermal cells, is responsible for the recognition and inhibition of ‘self’ pollen in the self-incompatibility (SI) response of the Brassicaceae. The allele-specific interaction of SRK with its cognate pollen coat-localized ligand, the S-locus cysteine-rich (SCR) protein, is thought to trigger a signalling cascade within the stigma epidermal cell that leads to the arrest of ‘self’ pollen at the stigma surface. In addition to the full-length signalling SRK receptor, stigma epidermal cells express two other SRK protein species that lack the kinase domain and whose role in the SI response is not understood: a soluble version of the SRK ectodomain designated eSRK and a membrane-tethered form designated tSRK. The goal of this study was to describe the sub-cellular distribution of the various SRK protein species in stigma epidermal cells as a prelude to visualizing receptor dynamics in response to SCR binding. Methods The Arabidopsis lyrata SRKb variant was tagged with the Citrine variant of yellow fluorescent protein (cYFP) and expressed in A. thaliana plants of the C24 accession, which had been shown to exhibit a robust SI response upon transformation with the SRKb–SCRb gene pair. The transgenes used in this study were designed for differential production and visualization of the three SRK protein species in stigma epidermal cells. Transgenic stigmas were analysed by pollination assays and confocal microscopy.Key Results and Conclusions Pollination assays demonstrated that the cYFP-tagged SRK proteins are functional and that the eSRK is not required for SI. Confocal microscopic analysis of cYFP-tagged SRK proteins in live stigma epidermal cells revealed the differential sub-cellular localization of the three SRK protein species but showed no evidence for redistribution of these proteins subsequent to incompatible pollination.  相似文献

Cancer cachexia is a complex disorder that is driven by inflammation and metabolic imbalances, resulting in extreme weight loss. Adipose tissue, a main player in cancer cachexia, is an essential metabolic and secretory organ consisting of both white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue. Its secretory products, including adipokines and cytokines, affect a wide variety of central and peripheral organs, such as the skeletal muscle, brain, pancreas, and liver. Therefore, a combination of metabolic alterations, and systemic inflammation dysregulation of both anti-inflammatory and proinflammatory modulators contribute toward adipose tissue wasting in cancer cachexia. Growing evidence suggests that, during cancer cachexia, WAT undergoes a browning process, resulting in increased lipid mobilization and energy expenditure. In this review, we have summarized the characteristics of cancer cachexia and WAT browning. Furthermore, this review describes how adipose tissue becomes inflamed in cancer, shedding light on the combinatorial action of multiple secreted macromolecules, cytokines, hormones, and tumor mediators on adipose tissue dysfunction. We also highlight the inflammatory responses, energy utilization defects, and molecular mechanisms underlying the WAT dysfunction and browning in cancer cachexia. Further, the actual mechanisms behind the loss of adipose tissue are unknown, but have been attributed to increased adipocyte lipolysis, systemic inflammation, and apoptosis or reduced lipogenesis. The understanding of adipose tissue dysfunction in cancer cachexia will hopefully promote the development of new therapeutic approaches to prevent or treat this wasting syndrome.  相似文献

Recognition of “self” pollen in the self-incompatibility (SI) response of the Brassicaceae is determined by allele-specific interaction between the S-locus receptor kinase (SRK), a transmembrane protein of the stigma epidermis, and its ligand, the pollen coat-localized S-locus cysteine-rich (SCR) protein. The current model for SRK-mediated signaling proposes a central role for the plant U-box (PUB) Armadillo repeat-containing protein ARC1, an E3 ligase that interacts with, and is phosphorylated by, the kinase domain of SRK. According to the model, activated ARC1 causes the degradation of factors required for successful pollen tube growth. However, Arabidopsis thaliana plants transformed with functional SRK and SCR genes isolated from self-incompatible A. lyrata can express an intense SI response despite lacking a functional ARC1 gene. Here, we tested the possibility that a different member of the A. thaliana PUB protein family might have assumed the role of ARC1 in SI. Toward this end, we analyzed the AtPUB2 gene, which is annotated as being highly expressed in stigmas. Our functional analysis of a T-DNA insertion pub2 allele, together with yeast two-hybrid interaction assays and reporter analysis of AtPUB2 promoter activity, demonstrates that AtPUB2 does not function in SI. The results leave open the question of whether the proposed model of ARC1-mediated signaling applies to transgenic SRKSCR self-incompatible A. thaliana plants.  相似文献

Control of nematode parasites with reduced reliance on the use of anthelmintics was studied in 16 ewes with suckling twin lambs on contaminated pasture in Denmark. Ewes and lambs were treated with albendazole at turn-out 3 May. Ewes were removed from the groups on 26 July, and lambs were slaughtered on 11 October. The animals were allocated to 4 groups of 8 lambs and their 4 ewes. Group TS was treated with albendazole at weeks 3, 6 and 8 after turnout and set-stocked; group TM was similarly treated but moved to clean pasture in conjunction with the last drenching; group US was untreated and set-stocked, and group UM was left untreated but moved to clean pasture week 8 after turn-out. Supplementary feed was offered in June and August due to scarcity of pasture. Strategic treatments of ewes and lambs weeks 3, 6 and 8 after turn-out, with or without a move to clean pasture, were highly effective in controlling nematode infections for most of the season. This was reflected in better weight gains and carcass characteristics in the treated compared to untreated lambs, resulting in an average increase in the value of the product by 36%. The effect of moving without treatment (UM) on faecal egg counts was limited but peak pasture infectivity was reduced to less than 10% compared to the set-stocked group and weight gains of lambs were significantly better despite poor feed availability in late season. The study showed that under set-stocked conditions repeated anthelmintic treatments of both ewes and lambs in early season may ensure sufficient nematode control whereas moving animals to clean pasture without dosing was less efficient. The latter may, however, still be a viable option in organic and other production systems where routine use of anthelmintics is banned, particularly if weaning and moving are combined or a second move is performed.  相似文献
