Extremely low‐frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF‐EMFs) may cause negative health effects. This study aimed to investigate the direct and indirect effects of chronic exposure to extremely low‐frequency electric and magnetic fields on the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). In this cross‐sectional study, 152 power plant workers were enrolled. The exposure level of employees was measured based on the IEEE Std C95.3.1 standard. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (Cat), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA) (independent variables) were measured in the serum of subjects. The Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire was used to assess MSDs (dependent variable). The mean exposure of electric and magnetic fields were 4.09 V/m (standard deviation [SD] = 4.08) and 16.27 µT (SD = 22.99), respectively. Increased levels of SOD, Cat, GPx, and MDA had a direct significant relation with MSDs. In the logistic regression model, SOD (odds ratio [OR] = 0.952, P = 0.026), GPx (OR = 0.991, P = 0.048), and MDA (OR = 0.741, P = 0.021) were significant predictors of MSDs. Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women. Despite improvements in treatment, the rate of breast cancer-related deaths is still high, and this issue needs further, accurate investigations. Although several treatment options are available, none of them are efficient for complete remission, particularly in advanced stages of the disease. It is known that cancerous cells have dysregulated apoptosis-related pathways, by which they can remain alive for a long time, expand freely, and escape from apoptosis-inducing drugs or antitumor immune responses. Therefore, modulation of apoptosis resistance in cancer cells may be an efficient strategy to overcome current problems faced in the development of immunotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of breast cancer. The inhibitors of apoptosis protein (IAPs) are important targets for cancer therapy because it has been shown that these molecules are overexpressed and highly active in various cancer cells and suppress apoptosis process in malignant cells by blockage of caspase proteins. There is evidence of Smac mimetics efficacy as a single agent; however, recent studies have indicated the efficacy of current anticancer immunotherapeutic approaches when combined with Smac mimetics, which are potent inhibitors of IAPs and synthesized mimicking Smac/Diablo molecules. In this review, we are going to discuss the efficacy of treatment of breast cancer by Smac mimetics alone or in combination with other therapeutics.  相似文献

Background

Efforts to stamp dengue in many dengue endemic countries has met little success. There is a need to re-examine and understand how the public at large view the dengue prevention efforts. This study aimed to examine the demographic factors, theoretical constructs of the Health Belief Model and knowledge about dengue and how these influence the practice of dengue prevention.

Methods

A national telephone survey was carried out with 2,512 individuals of the Malaysian public aged 18–60 years.

Results

The majority (73%) of the Malaysian public had a total dengue prevention score of 51–100 (of a possible score of 1–100). Multivariate analysis suggests significant correlates of higher dengue prevention practices with demographic background, perception of susceptibility to dengue, perceived density of mosquitoes in the neighbourhood and knowledge about dengue. Households of lower income of which the majority (40.7%) were from the rural areas, were associated with the highest odds [OR = 1.33; 95%CI = 1.09–1.67; p = 0.004] of dengue prevention. Dengue prevention practices were also less likely to be undertaken in neighbourhoods where the responders perceived there is no and/or low density of mosquitoes. Dengue prevention practices are also less likely to be practiced by skilled workers [OR = 0.78; 95%CI = 0.63–0.95; p = 0.029] compared to those unemployed. Higher perceived susceptibility to dengue was associated with higher dengue prevention practices and participants with higher dengue knowledge were found to have a higher level of involvement in dengue prevention practices.

Conclusion

Results from the study suggest that in formulating approaches to contain dengue, strategies should be developed to cultivate dengue prevention practices among urban population and target areas with low density of mosquitoes where public perceived a less likely chance of getting dengue. Dengue prevention campaigns should focus on messages highlighting the risk of contracting dengue and education to increase knowledge about dengue.  相似文献

A series of substituted 2-pyrazolines were synthesized, and the steric and electronic effects of substituents on the C3- and C5-positions of the heterocyclic ring on their fluorescent ability were investigated. Two different conjugative intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and intramolecular charge transfer through space (spiro-conjugation) affect the fluorescence intensity of these compounds. The extent of the ICT process and spiro-conjugation depends on the electronic nature of the additional substitution and its position on the attached aryl rings. In addition, the effects of the concentration and the solvent polarity on the fluorescence emission were studied. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to gain insight into the geometric, electronic, and spectroscopic properties of the pyrazoline derivatives. The results of both experimental and computational studies explain the effects of the geometrical orientation of the C3- and C5-aryl rings toward the heterocyclic ring and also the electronic nature of their additional substitutions on the fluorescence intensity.  相似文献

Genipin, a compound derived from Gardenis jasminoides Ellis fruits, was demonstrated to be the specific uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) inhibitor. UCP2 is a mitochondrial carrier protein that creates proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane, thus uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis. Several studies revealed that UCP2 is broadly over-expressed in leukemia, colorectal, lung, ovarian, prostate, testicular, and bladder cancers. However, the effect of genipin still needs to be elucidated in neurological malignancies. In this study, we investigated the anticancer effect of genipin in U87MG and A172 cell lines. The anticancer effect of genipin on these cell lines was measured by microculture tetrazoliumtest (MTT), Trypan blue exclusion, and colony formation assays, in the presence of various concentrations of genipin at different time intervals. We assessed apoptosis and measure intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) by flow cytometry. Expression of UCP2 and some of the genes involved in apoptosis was analyzed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results of the MTT assay showed that genipin moderately reduced metabolic activity of both cell lines in dose- and time-dependent manner. Result of Trypan blue exclusion test indicated that the viable cell count decreased in the treated group in a concentration-dependent manner. Genipin also significantly decreased colony formation ability of these cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Result of morphological changes showed that there were significant differences in cell number and morphology in treated groups as compared with the untreated groups. Flow cytometric analysis of U87MG and A172 cells with annexin V/propidium iodide staining, 48 hours after treatment with genipin, displays 22.4% and 26.1% apoptotic population, respectively, in treated cells, in comparison to 7.42% and 9.31% apoptotic cells of untreated cells. After treatment, UCP2 and B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL 2) genes are downregulated, and BCL 2 associated X protein, BCL 2 antagonist/killer, BCL 2 interacting killer, and Cytochrome c genes are upregulated. Genipin treatment increased mitochondrial ROS levels and also induced apoptosis through caspase-3 upregulation. In conclusion, the antiproliferative effects of genipin on the growth of both glioblastoma cell lines have been shown in all of these assays, and genipin profoundly induced apoptosis in both cell lines via the UCP2-related mitochondrial pathway through the induction of intracellular ROS.  相似文献

Microalgae play an important role during the tertiary treatment of municipal wastewater. Cell immobilization techniques have been developed in order to improve the quality of the treated wastewater and avoid wash out of the biomass. Since cell immobilization method may affect the nutrient removal efficiency, ten strains of microalgae were immobilized in sodium alginate gel in different-diameter circular screens, and orthophosphate removal efficiency from municipal wastewater was studied. Results indicate that the alginate immobilization screen size and contact surface with wastewater affects the microalgae synthesis activity and thus orthophosphate removal efficiency. Increasing the contact surface by making smaller alginate screens will increase the cation exchange rate and reduce the orthophosphate concentration in the medium. Among all microalgae treatments, Scenedesmus rubescens MCCS 018, Chlamydomonas sp. MCCS 026, and Chroococcus dispersus MCCS 006 had the highest PO 4 3- -P removal efficiency of 68.8%, 71.9%, and 72.3% within 12?days.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies on genital human papilloma viruses infection (HPVs) in general population are crucial for the implementation of health policy guidelines for developing the strategies to prevent the primary and secondary cervical cancer. In different parts of Iran, there is a lack of population-based studies to determine the prevalence of HPV in the general population. The aim of this population-based study is to compare the prevalence rate of genital HPV infection among reproductive women with our previous clinic-based data, which showed a prevalence rate of 5% in women in southern Iran. RESULTS: Using general primers for all genotypes of HPV, of 799 randomly selected women, five (0.63%, 95% CI 0.23-1.55%) tested positive for HPV DNA. Overall, seven different HPV genotypes were detected: six types (16, 18, 31, 33, 51 and 56) were carcinogenic, or "high risk genotypes" and one genotype (HPV-66) was "probably carcinogenic." CONCLUSIONS: In a population-based study, the prevalence of HPV infection among southern Iranian women was lower than that observed worldwide. However, our gynaecological clinic-based study on the prevalence of HPV infection showed results comparable with other studies in the Middle East and Persian Gulf countries. Since gynaecological clinic-based data may generally overestimate HPV prevalence, estimates of prevalence according to clinic-based data should be adjusted downward by the population-based survey estimates.  相似文献

Statins are potent drugs, used as lipid‐lowering agents in cardiovascular diseases. Hepatotoxicity is one of the serious adverse effects of statins, and the exact mechanism of hepatotoxicity is not yet clear. In this study, the cytotoxic effects of the most commonly used statins, that is, atorvastatin, lovastatin, and simvastatin toward isolated rat hepatocytes, were evaluated. Markers, such as cell death, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial membrane potential, and the amount of reduced and oxidized glutathione in the statin‐treated hepatocytes, were investigated. It was found that the statins caused cytotoxicity toward rat hepatocytes dose dependently. An elevation in ROS formation, accompanied by a significant amount of lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial depolarization, was observed. Cellular glutathione reservoirs were decreased, and a significant amount of oxidized glutathione was formed. This study suggests that the adverse effect of statins toward hepatocytes is mediated through oxidative stress and the hepatocytes mitochondria play an important role in the statin‐induced toxicity. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
