Thermodynamic Melting Studies on Oligonucleotide-Peptide Conjugates

Abstract

A small library of oligonucleotide-peptide conjugates has been prepared and studied to explore the influence of the various peptide side chain (cationic, anionic or hydrophobic) on the hybridation properties of the DNA.     

Role of date of seeding,soil moisture,temperature and pH in the incidence of downy mildew of Sorghum

Summary Of the different dates of seeding tried, the last week of June proved to be the best time to avoid the incidence of downy mildew of Sorghum. The reduction in the yield of grain and fodder is directly proportional to the severity of the disease. The disease is suppressed considerably by an available soil moisture (ASM) of 76 to 79 per cent but favoured by an ASM of 44 to 47 per cent during the period of 16 days after seeding. Soil temperature of 26.6°C during this period appears to be the optimum for the disease expression. The pH of the soil is not altered by the incidence of the disease or by the growth of the crop.     

Effect of long-term fertilizer treatments on groundnut yield,nodulation, and nutrient uptake at Samaru,Nigeria

It was observed in a long-term fertility study that P application results in better nodulation and seed yield. The N yield per plant increased significantly with P, K, and B application, but the promoting effect of K and B on N content per plant was not reflected in the final yield. Data on mean nutrient uptake indicate that about 63% of N, 68% of P, 23% of K, 4% of Ca and 24% of Mg were present in the kernels, the remainder being in the haulm and shells. Soil will be exhausted fast if the nutrient rich groundnut residues are completely exported from the field and not compensated by adequate fertilizer application. Judicious use of fertilizers on groundnut has been shown to yield more than 100 kg of biologically fixed N per hectare.     

Irreversible inactivation of mammalian Δ5-3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases by 5, 10-secosteroids. Enzymatic oxidation of allenic alcohols to the corresponding allenic ketones

Novel 4,5-allenic 3β-hydroxy-5,10-secosteroids have been synthesized by sodium borohydride reduction of the corresponding conjugated allenic 3-oxo-5, 10-secosteroids. The secosteroid allenic alcohols are substrates for bovine adrenal and human placental Δ⁵-3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, and the resulting electrophilic conjugated allenic ketones are shown to inactivate these dehydrogenases in a time-dependent manner. Inactivated enzyme did not recover activity after filtration through Sephadex G-25. In contrast, the secosteroid allenic alcohols were not oxidized at C-3 by the bacterial 3β(and 17β)-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase from $\text{P. testosteroni}$, nor did the corresponding allenic ketones inactivate this enzyme when incubated directly.     

Potentiality of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor,poaceae) for syrup preparation and alcohol production in India

Thirty-eight cultures of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor, Poaceae) at dead-ripe stage showed that the cultures IS 6962, IS 9889, PR 4579, and IS 707 contained higher amounts of total sugars per 100 ml of extractable juice. But total sugar yield was found to be high (>200 kg/ha) in IS 715, IS 724, IS 6962, and IS 9901. Though upper internodes contained comparatively higher sugar content than the bottom internodes, the seventh internode had the maximum. A highly positive correlation (+0.9828) was found to exist between total sugars and sucrose in the internodes. Fermentation of juice from IS 6962 yielded 240 litre of alcohol/ha. Roasted chickpea candies prepared from syrup of 73^o brix resembled that from jaggery in taste and flavour.
