The lycaenid butterfly, Niphanda fusca, has a parasitic relationship with its host ant, Camponotus japonicus: the caterpillars may use chemical mimicry to enter the ant nest where they are fed mouth-to-mouth by the adult ants until pupation. Nevertheless, larvae offer their host ants a nutritious secretion that contains 160 mM glucose and 43 mM glycine. Using glucose and glycine mixture as artificial secretions, we investigated the gustatory effect of glucose and/or glycine on the ants. Glycine induced neither feeding behavior nor gustatory response in the ants if its concentration was <500 mM. In the presence of glycine at the concentration in the secretion, however, the ants improved their preference to glucose, and the sugar receptor cell exhibited electrophysiological enhancement of response to glucose in a glycine-concentration-dependent manner. By adding glycine to glucose in their secretions, therefore, the butterfly larvae can manipulate the gustatory sense of the ants. The alluring taste of 'glycine-flavored glucose' could motivate the host ants to feed the larvae and thereby receive the secretions as a reward. The taste enhancement created by the combination of sugar and amino acid may play a role in the evolution of the parasitic relationships of these insects. The formation of complex between the Cu2+ ion and poly(α-L -glutamic acid) [poly(Glu)] in 150 mM NaCl solutions was studied by uv–visible absorption and equilibrium dialysis methods at the mixing ratios of Glu residues to Cu2+, R, of 32, 16, and 8 and in the pH range 4–7. The results showed that more than 90% of Cu2+ ions bind to the poly(Glu) at pH > 4.9, but the bound Cu(II) begins to dissociate with a decrease in pH. The absorption spectra of bound Cu(II) varied with pH and R in a complicated manner. Three different component spectra were disclosed from the analysis of the pH dependence of the bound spectra. We concluded that poly(Glu)–Cu(II) complexes fall into three classes in the pH range 4–7, with the proportions of these complexes varying with both pH and R. The three complexes predominate either in the helix or extended-coil region, in the helix–coil transition region, or in the helix-aggregate region. The stability constant and binding mode of each Cu(II)–Glu complex were estimated from the dialysis data. With these results, the possible structure of each complex is discussed. 相似文献

Five natural populations of D. melanogaster in Japan were surveyed for male recombination frequency in terms of the quantities of the mean and variance after crossing with cn bw females. The experimental condition enabled P-M system hybrid dysgenesis to take place. The means were not so different from one another, but there was a vast variation in the variances between them. Using one of these populations, two additional experimental populations were started, and the male recombination frequencies were monitored for 30 generations. Both the means and variances decreased in value at 25 degrees C. The regression line was Y = -0.000030X + 0.001706 on generation for the mean values, and was Y = -0.000098X + 0.005068 for the standard deviations in the cage population. There was no correlation between the means or the standard deviations and the copy numbers of the members of P element family as a whole. The experimental results indicate that the complete P transposable elements still retained in population were decreased in frequency and replaced by its degenerative nonautonomous forms. 相似文献

When leukotriene B4 (LTB4) was incubated with rat liver microsomal fraction in the presence of coenzyme A (CoA) and ATP, a more polar product (compound I) was detected on reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The product was identified as LTB4-CoA ester on the basis of ultraviolet spectrometry, alkaline hydrolysis followed by RP-HPLC, and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS). The activity forming LTB4-CoA ester was localized in the microsomal fraction. The reaction was proportional to the concentration of the microsomal protein with an optimal pH of 7.5-8.0 and completely dependent on CoA and ATP. AbstractPeculiar meniscate burrows with three sediment cords occur in early to middle Miocene tidal-flat deposits of southwestern Japan. Two of the cords are situated at the bottom and the other is at its center. Detailed observations of the burrow structures and comparative neoichnological studies of modern spatangoid burrows in a tidal flat revealed that the former two were true drainage tubes and the latter was fecal in origin. The trace fossil was thus assigned to the ichnogenus Scolicia. Based on these findings, a new ichnospecies Scolicia shirahamensis isp. nov. has been described here. The central sediment cord is seemingly identical to the drainage tube of the ichnogenus Bichordites, another ichnogenus that has been commonly ascribed to a fossil spatangoid burrow, similar to Scolicia. Careless ichnogeneric identification of a spatangoid burrow, based only on the central sediment cord, therefore, may produce an incorrect identification. 相似文献

Low‐grade inflammation, which plays important roles in the development of fatal diseases, is commonly observed in obese people. However, this has not been evaluated in lean people, who have relatively increased mortality risk compared with people of normal weight. Here, we elucidate the association between systemic low‐grade inflammation and low body weight, with particular emphasis on aging. We examined the relationship between circulating C‐reactive protein (CRP) and BMI in a cross‐sectional study of 2,675 apparently healthy adults who had undergone a medical check‐up. Overall, subjects with low BMI (<21.0 kg/m2, n = 585) showed a favorable cardiovascular profile without being undernourished. In the elderly (≥55 years old), logarithmic CRP (LogCRP) showed a sigmoid curve against BMI with a base at BMI 21.0–22.9 kg/m2, but not against waist circumference (WC), even in nonsmokers. In contrast, in middle‐aged people, LogCRP showed an almost linear relationship with both BMI and WC. LogCRP levels in elderly nonsmokers with low BMI, but not normal or high BMI, were significantly higher than those in middle‐aged with corresponding BMI (P < 0.05). After adjustment for age, sex, smoking status, and weight change over the past 2 years, the adjusted means of LogCRP still had a similar sigmoid curve against BMI in the elderly. These results suggest that elderly people with low body weight may have subtle low‐grade inflammation irrespective of a favorable cardiovascular risk, which remains to be confirmed in further studies. 相似文献

Similarity among the floral scents of hawkmoth-pollinated plants was investigated with headspace samplings. Six of seven plant
species belonging to different families were found to be rich in isoprenoids, among which linalool was the most common compound.
Linalool showed rhythmicity with a nocturnal increase inLonicera japonica. These findings suggest that linalool is a common attractant for nocturnal hawkmoths. However, the composition of other isoprenoids,
benzenoids and fatty acid derivatives varied markedly among the plant species examined. There was a significant correlation
between species composition of flower-visiting hawkmoths and specific floral scents, suggesting that attractiveness to each
