The effects of UV-B radiation (290–320 nm) on development of damping-off of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) caused by the fungusFusarium oxysporum were examined in a growth cabinet. The incidence of disease greatly increased when experimental plants were grown in visible radiation with supplementary UV-B radiation. This increase was suppressed by increasing the irradiation of visible radiation.Fusarium oxysporum was isolated from the roots of all damping-off plants and the roots of some unwilted plants, indicating that spinach infected with the pathogen did not necessarily suffer from damping-off in 15d. Supplementary UV-B radiation suppressed the increase in growth components such as the number of leaves, the plant height and the fresh weight of aboveground plant parts, but did not affect the fresh weight of roots. The ratio of the number of plants infected with pathogen to the total number of plants was over 80% irrespective of light conditions. It was suggested that the defense response of spinach to this pathogen was greatly influenced by the physiological state of aboveground plant parts resulting from supplementary UV-B radiation.  相似文献

Based on a sample of 237 live births recorded over a period of 30 years, a tendency for longer interbirth intervals following the birth of daughters than sons was recognized, in the provisioned Arashiyama troop of Japanese macaques. This may indicate that female infants were more costly to produce than male infants. This tendency seemed to be independent of a mother’s rank.  相似文献

Fischer rats were a fed diet supplied with copper chloride (150–600 ppm) for 60 d from weaning. Serum (glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activities were increased with the increase of Cu concentration in the diet. Biliary excretion of Cu was related to the dietary Cu level. Depositions of hepatic and renal Cu were also related to the dietary Cu level in a dose-dependent manner. In particular, hepatic (155.2±13.3 μg/g) and renal (44.9±4.4 μg/g) Cu concentrations increased abruptly in the Cu-600 ppm group. In the liver, about 60% of Cu was distributed in the soluble fraction (100,000 g supernatant). In the Cu-600 ppm group, 25% of cystosolic Cu was bound to metallothionein (MT). Our results suggest that chronic exposure to Cu appears to have a deleterious effect on the hepatic function, and further, that even in rats with normal biliary Cu excretion, clearance of Cu from the liver may be marginal when dietary Cu is near the 600-ppm level. Although Cu is an essential nutrient, an overload of Cu should be avoided.  相似文献

We describe short-term changes in foraging behavior by wild Yakushima macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui),which inhabit a warm-temperate broad—leaved forest on Yakushima Island (30°N, 131°E), Japan. Rapid changes of dietary composition, activity budget, and range use by the monkeys occurred from May to June, apparently associated with changes in the availability of the fruit of Myrica rubraBefore the fruit ripened, monkeys spent less time moving and more time feeding on many species of leaves, which accounted for 40% of feeding time. However, when M. rubrabegan to ripen, they fed intensively on the fruit, which accounted for three-fourths of feeding time,though the activity budget remained unaffected As fiuit of M. rubradecreased,the monkeys fed more on the fruit of other species and on insects, and spent more time moving at higher speeds. There marked shifts in foraging pattern occurred within only two months. In terms of moving cost and dietary quality,Yakushima macaques shifted their foraging pattern according to the availability of M. rubrafrom a “low-cost, low-yield” strategy to a “low-cost, high-yield” strategy, and then to a more costly strategy. The ability to make such rapid shifts in foraging pattern may allow the macaques to effectively use the highly variable food supply within their small range.  相似文献

The nuclease S1 gene (nucS) from Aspergillus oryzae was isolated using a polymerase-chain-reaction-amplified DNA fragment as a probe, and a 2.6-kb SalI-EcoRI fragment containing the nucS gene was sequenced. It was deduced that the nucS gene had two short introns, 49 and 50 nucleotides in lenght. The nucS gene had an open-reading frame of 963 base pairs and coded for a protein of 287 amino acid residues, comprising the signal peptide of 20 amino acids and a mature protein of 267 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence agreed well with the published amino acid sequence except for one substitution. Southern hybridization analysis showed that the nucS gene existed as a single copy in the A. oryzae chromosome. When the structural gene of nucS was fused with the promoter of the glaA gene and introduced into A. oryzae, the yield od secreted nuclease S1 increased about 100-fold compared with the recipient strain.  相似文献

Cyanidioschyzon merolae andCyanidium caldarium are representative species among of the most primitive algae, although the two species are distinctly different in various morphological traits. We determined the nucleotide sequence of therbcL gene and a flanking 8-kb region in the plastid genome of each of these algae. In both algae, 12 genes were identified in this region, in an identical order. This gene order is not conserved in the plastid genomes of other species of the kingdom Plantae that have been sequenced to data. An additional unidentified open reading frame was also found in the two algae that we analyzed, which has not been described in any other species of algae includingPorphyra purpurea. Comparison of the amino acid sequences of selected genes also supported the conclusion thatCyanidioschyzon merolae andCyanidium caldarium are closely related and that they are distinct from other rhodophytes. The nucleotide sequence data reported in this paper will appear in the DDBJ, EMBL and GenBank Nucleotide Sequence Databases under the accession numbers D63675 and D63676.  相似文献

The polyhydroxylated nortropane alkaloids called calyste-ginesoccur in many plants of the Convolvulaceae, Solanaceae, andMoraceae families. Certain of these alkaloids exhibit potentinhibitory activities against glycosidases and the recentlydemonstrated occurrence of calystegines in the leaves, skins,and sprouts of potatoes (Solatium tuberosum), and in the leavesof the eggplant (S.melongena), has raised concerns regardingthe safety of these vegetables in the human diet. We have surveyedthe occurrence of calystegines in edible fruits and vegetablesof the families Convolvulaceae, Solanaceae, and Moraceae byGC-MS. Calystegines A3, B1, B2, and C1 were detected in allthe edible fruits and vegetables tested; sweet and chili peppers,potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, Physalis fruits, sweet potatoes,and mulberries. Calystegines B1 and C1 were potent competitiveinhibitors of the bovine, human, and rat β-glucosidaseactivities, with K1 values of 150, 10, and 1.9 µM, respectivelyfor B1 and 15,1.5, and 1 µM, respectively, for C1. CalystegineB2 was a strong competitive inhibitor of the -galactosidaseactivity in all the livers. Human β-xylosidase was inhibitedby all four nortropanes, with calystegine C1 having a K1 of0.13 µM. Calystegines A3 and B2 selectively inhibitedthe rat liver β-glucosidase activity. We studied thein vitro activation of aflatoxin B1 (B1) by microsomes and its inactivation by the cytosol of various quail and hamster organs, using B1-DNA binding as an index. The microsomal activity of the liver to bind B1 to DNA was not largely different between the two species and was higher than that of the other organs examined in either species. The microsomal activity of the kidney and lung was very low in the quail compared with the hamster, indicating the very small contribution of the lung and kidney microsomes to the activation of B1 in birds. Only the hamster liver cytosol showed strong inhibition of microsome-mediated B1-DNA binding.  相似文献
